Is The Premier League Title Race Over?

The biggest challenge of Liverpool’s season came last weekend when they travelled to the Etihad Stadium and took on champions Manchester City. Liverpool emerged from this huge clash with all 3 points with first half goals from Mo Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai. They followed this up with a 2-0 win versus Newcastle. This result along with Arsenal’s defeat to West Ham United and draw with Forest leaves Liverpool 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Liverpool have played a game more than Arsenal but they are very much in the driver's seat as far as the destination of the Premier League trophy is concerned. If Arsenal win their game in hand they will still be 10 points adrift of Liverpool, which is still a huge gap with just 10 games to go. Can this gap be overturned? Let’s look at the remaining fixtures of both teams to see if there’s any chance that the title race is still alive.

Liverpool’s Remaining Fixtures

Liverpool have an amazing record in the Premier League this season, winning 20, drawing 7 and losing just once in the 28 matches they have played. Key wins this season include the recent 0-2 win away at Manchester City as well as a 2-0 home win over the same opponent earlier in the season. They also had a 0-3 win at Old Trafford versus Manchester United at the beginning of the season.

Liverpool are in a strong position to gain a 20th English league title which would put them alongside Manchester United with the joint most English league titles in history. If Arsenal win their game in hand then Liverpool will have to lose 4 of their last 10 games, with Arsenal going perfect. Liverpool’s remaining fixtures are as follows;

  • Southampton (home)
  • Everton (home)
  • Fulham (away)
  • West Ham United (home)
  • Leicester City (away)
  • Tottenham Hotspur (home)
  • Chelsea (away)
  • Arsenal (home)
  • Brighton (away)
  • Crystal Palace (home)

Liverpool have an amazing record in the Premier League this season, winning 19, drawing 7 and losing just once in the 27 matches they have played.

Arsenal’s Remaining Fixtures

Arsenal have the very difficult task of trying to chase down Liverpool for the rest of the season. They had a chance to close the gap to 5 points before Liverpool travelled to Man City last weekend but failed to take the initiative losing 0-1 to West Ham courtesy of a first half Jarrod Bowen header.

Arsenal have lacked a cutting edge in attack ever since the injury to Bukayo Saka and their failure to bring in a forward in the January transfer window could be what costs them the Premier League title. This lack of a cutting edge has led to dropped points with Arsenal winning 15, drawing 9 and losing 3 of their 27 games this season. Arsenal will likely need to win every game between now and the end of the season if they are to have any hope of passing out Liverpool. Their remaining fixtures can be seen below;

  • Manchester United (away)
  • Chelsea- game in hand on Liverpool (home)
  • Fulham (home)
  • Everton (away)
  • Brentford (home)
  • Ipswich Town (away)
  • Crystal Palace (home)
  • Bournemouth (home)
  • Liverpool (away)
  • Newcastle (home)
  • Southampton (away)

Conclusion

At this moment it does look as if the title race may be over. After last weekend’s results with Liverpool winning at the champions Man City and Arsenal losing to a struggling West Ham side, it seems as though Liverpool have one hand on the trophy. There is still a bit to go in the season and anything can happen in football, but seeing the remaining fixtures of both sides it is hard to see Arsenal closing the gap.

Arsenal will need to win every game and hope Liverpool slip up on numerous occasions, which at this moment they don’t seem like doing. If Arsenal are to win the title from here it will go down as one of the best comebacks in Premier League history, but would also be a massive disappointment for Liverpool and would be won they throw away. It will be intriguing to see how the title race goes from here as the finish line gets closer.
