✔️ Shanghai Masters Snooker Betting Tips
Now that you know five quality sites that offer top odds for betting on the Shanghai Masters, I am now going to give you some free snooker betting tips ahead of the 2023 iteration of this competition.
Who Will Win the Title?
We do not yet know all of the players that will be taking part in this competition, but we know some of the usual suspects will be participating. This includes the likes of Ronnie O'Sullivan, Judd Trump, Luca Brecel, Neil Robertson, Mark Williams, Mark Selby, and Mark Allen. All of these players can beat each other on their day, so they will all fancy their chances of going on to claim the title and the check for £210,000.
Top Tip 1: While all of the above can certainly go on to lift the trophy, my money will be on Ronnie O'Sullivan to win the 2023 edition. This is a competition that he loves playing in as can be seen from the fact that he has won the last three editions. Some players prefer certain tournaments over others, and it is clear that The Rocket has an affinity towards the Shanghai Masters.
Will Someone Land a 147 Break?
A 147 in snooker, for those who are new to this sport occurs when a player pots 15 reds, 15 blacks, and the colours without missing a single shot. It is equivalent to a nine-dart finish in darts or a golfer hitting a hole-in-one. The odds are usually decent due to the difficulty level of landing a 147.
Top Tip 2: Although this is a non-ranking event, it is one that the players take seriously due to the total prize fund that is on offer. Additionally, it is an event that features the top snooker players in the world, meaning that quality should not be in short supply throughout. With all of this mind, I reckon that there is a good chance that one of the players will make a 147, which comes with a prize pot of £10,000 – some added motivation.
Who Are the Dark Horses?
Every sporting event has a dark horse, and some of the players to look out for in the 2023 Shanghai Masters that will not be favourites with the bookmakers include Ali Carter, Shaun Murphy, Robert Milkins, Ding Junhui, and Jack Lisowski. Although they will not be considered the favourites, they know that if they play to the best of their abilities, then they can go deep in the event.
Top Tip 3: If you do not want to bet on O'Sullivan to win, for whatever reason, then I would recommend that you consider betting on Shaun Murphy. During the 2022/23 season, he showed some scintillating form to win the Players Championship and the Tour Championship, and he started the 23/24 season with a bang by winning the Championship League. With this type of form, I can see him having plenty of success in China.
Who Will Crumble Under the Pressure
Some players have bags of talent but crumble when the pressure is on, and one such player is Jack Lisowski. He has the skills to beat anyone on his day, but when there is a lot on the line he seems to buckle under the pressure. In the 22/23 season, he made it to a quarter-final and two semi-finals, but came undone and went away empty handed. This is something that you might want to think about if you are considering putting money on him to win.
Top Tip 4: While I really hope that Lisowski breaks his duck and wins a tournament soon, I would not risk betting on him to win at the moment. He needs that one win to get over his mental hurdles, and then I am pretty sure that he will start picking up more titles. However, until that happens, I do not recommend betting on him.
Below is a table that summarises my tips for those who would like to place bets on this prestigious event:
Categories | Prediction | Reason | Bookmaker |
---|---|---|---|
Outright Winner | Ronnie O'Sullivan | One of the world's best players and really enjoys playing in China | BoyleSports |
Dark Horse | Shaun Murphy | Has been in scintilating form, so should definitely not be overlooked | Betway |
A 147 to be Hit | Yes | The world's best snooker players are invited to play in this event | BoyleSports |
Someone to crumble | Jack Lisowski | When the pressure has been on in the past, he seems to wilt | William Hill |

💸 Shanghai Masters Betting Markets
Snooker offers plenty of different markets that snooker betting fans can put their money on, so in this part of my guide I am going to take a brief look at some of the more popular markets for this sport.
Match Winner
No matter the sporting event, you will always be given the chance to bet on the team or player that you believe will go on and win a particular game. In Gaelic football, soccer, and rugby you can put money on the match ending in a draw, but the majority of snooker events do not have such an option because they use a knockout format where the winner progresses to the next round and the loser goes home.
Total Frames
This is an over/under market where you are betting on the total number of frames that will be played in a match. Your bookmaker will provide you with a figure, and you then have to decide whether there more frames or fewer. For instance, if they offer a number such as 8.5 in a best of 11 match, then you need to decide if the match will be made up of at least 9 frames (over) or 8 frames or fewer (under).
Correct Score
This betting market is all about predicting the correct score of a game - the winner and loser of the match is irrelevant. This is one of the hardest markets to get right, which is why it will usually come with some pretty enticing odds. All of the best bookmakers will allow you to bet on the correct score as well as the winner - this is even harder, so the odds will be even higher.
Frame Winner
Instead of betting on the winner of the whole match, you can put your hard-earned cash on the player that you think will go on to win the next frame. With such a market, it does not matter who eventually wins the match, so long as your selected player wins the frame that you predicted that they would win.
147 Break in the Match
You should already know what a 147 is in snooker because I explained it earlier on in the tips section of this guide. You will usually be able to bet on whether a 147 will be scored in a match or not. Due to its rarity, you will find some enticing odds for such a market.
💾 Shanghai Masters Snooker Format
The Shanghai Masters is an invitational tournament that is made up of the following players:
- Top 16 players from the WST
- Four of the highest ranked Chinese players outside the top 16
- Four Chinese players who form part of the Chinese Billiard Snooker Association
The top eight players get a bye into the second round of the competition, which has a knockout format. This means that the winner of a match progresses to the next round, while the loser is eliminated. What is the frame situation of each round? Well, the First Round, Last 16, and the Quarter-Finals are all the best of 11 frames, while the Semi-Finals is the best of 19 frames and the Final is the best of 21.
📅 Shanghai Masters Tournament Schedule 2023
