BetinIreland Rating Guidelines

Rating guidelines

Under our rating guidelines, BetInIreland rates every online casino on the same 10 criteria, each with a fixed weight, and combines them into 1 overall rating. Licensing & Security carries the most weight, at 20%, because the licence decides who regulates a casino and where you can turn if something goes wrong. Sportsbooks are rated on 8 criteria, from the licence to odds, markets and payouts, the same ones behind our list of the best betting sites.

Every rating rests on 3 sources of evidence: the operator's published terms, the regulator's licence register and our own tests. Our casino ranking labels which is which, so you can see where a figure comes from and run the same checks on any site you're considering.

Our Rating Guidelines, Step by Step

Our checks follow the same order before a site gets a rating.

  1. Licence. We look the licence up on the regulator's own register and record the result and the date of the check.
  2. Terms. We read the bonus, payment and responsible gambling pages and the full terms, and note the date we read them.
  3. Payout test. We open a real-money account and time a withdrawal from request to arrival, as set out below. Our casino ranking gives the month of the test round and names the casinos that joined after it.
  4. Product. We go through the lobby or sports menu, the cashier, the mobile site and any app, and the support channels with their stated hours.
  5. Score. Our analysts score each criterion on that evidence and combine the scores into the overall rating.
  6. Recheck. We repeat the licence and terms checks before each update of a ranking page.

The 10 Casino Rating Criteria and Their Weights

The weights reflect how much each criterion affects you as a player, and together they add up to 100%. The licence weighs most. Games and bonuses come next because they shape every session and every deposit, then payments, mobile play and support. The 4 criteria at 5% refine the score.

Licensing & Security (20%)

Rating guidelines

The licence tells you who regulates the casino and where to take a dispute you can't settle with the casino itself, so it carries the most weight. We check every licence on the regulator's own register, as the licence section below explains. A licence we can't confirm costs points here. For security, we expect SSL encryption on every page and a clear privacy policy on how your personal and payment data is handled.

Game Selection & Quality (15%)

Rating guidelines

We look for a real spread of slots, jackpots, table, live and instant win games, not just a large number. Missing game types cost more points than a much bigger slot count earns, so a casino with a smaller but broader lobby can outscore a bigger lobby. Games from strong studios such as Evolution, NetEnt, Play'n GO and Pragmatic Play count in a casino's favour. Game counts in our casino ranking are either the casino's own figure or our own count of the lobby on a stated date, so treat them as approximate.

Bonuses & Promotions (15%)

Rating guidelines

A bonus is worth what its terms let you keep, so we work out what each welcome bonus asks of you in euro, using the wagering, the time limit and the maximum bet. Wagering on the bonus only scores higher than wagering on the deposit plus the bonus. At 40x, a €20 deposit with a €20 bonus means €1,600 of wagering when the deposit counts, against €800 on the bonus alone. We also look at reloads, cashback and tournaments, and whether cashback is paid as cash or as bonus money.

Payment Methods (10%)

Rating guidelines

Methods Irish players already use, such as debit cards, Revolut, Apple Pay and bank transfer, score higher. We record the deposit and withdrawal limits, any fees, and which methods pay out as well as pay in. Speed counts too. We compare each casino's stated withdrawal times with our own test withdrawal, so a quick test payout lifts the score and a slow payout lowers it.

Mobile Experience & Interface (10%)

Rating guidelines

Games, the cashier, support and the responsible gambling tools should all be easy to reach on a phone. We check the mobile browser site and whether there's a native or installable web app. Where a casino has an app, our casino ranking names the store it's listed on and the date we checked.

Customer Support (10%)

Rating guidelines

We check which channels are open (live chat, email, phone) and the opening hours published for each. A help centre that answers common questions clearly scores higher.

Average Return to Player (RTP) (5%)

Rating guidelines

RTP is the share of stakes a game pays back over time. A 96% slot returns €96 per €100 staked, on average, over a very long run, and it tells you nothing certain about a single session. Casinos that show the RTP of each game score higher, because you can then choose with the figure in front of you.

Certified Games & Fair Play (5%)

Rating guidelines

We look for games certified by an independent lab such as iTech Labs, eCOGRA or GLI, which test the random number generators behind the results. We also note whether the casino names an independent complaints body, such as EGIS or eCOGRA, for disputes it can't settle itself.

Brand History & Credibility (5%)

Rating guidelines

An established brand earns credit, though a new casino can still rank well if it performs strongly on the other criteria. We read the full terms, including dormancy fees and withdrawal rules, and check that the company named in the terms matches the licence holder on the register.

Responsible Gambling (5%)

We record which tools each casino offers: deposit limits, time-outs, reality checks and self-exclusion. Casinos that let you set your own limits score higher than those where you have to ask support. We also check which Irish support services the casino points you to. GamStop covers UK-licensed sites only, so it won't block a casino licensed elsewhere.

If gambling stops being fun, the National Gambling Helpline is free and open 24/7 on 1800 936 725. Our responsible gambling guide lists more help in Ireland.

How the Overall Rating Comes Together

Our analysts score each of the 10 criteria on the evidence, using editorial judgement within each criterion, and the overall rating combines the 10 scores using the weights above. The weights are fixed and the same for every casino.

The weights explain why a casino can lead on games or bonuses and still rank lower. Because the licence carries 20% and games and bonuses 15% each, a casino whose licence we can't confirm can rank below a casino with a weaker lobby and a smaller bonus. Our casino ranking shows real cases, with the trade-offs that put each casino where it is.

A top rating means a casino came out ahead across the weighted criteria in our checks, not that it has no weak spots. Each entry in our casino ranking lists what to know before you sign up, and the ratings carry the date they were set.

Older review pages and our other ranking pages may show earlier scores, rating categories or wording. Our casino ranking shows the current rating.

Licence Checks and the Irish Law Position

No online casino can hold an Irish licence yet. The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 set up the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI), and its first licences, for remote betting, took effect on 1 July 2026. Gaming licences are planned during 2027 and 2028. Until then, the GRAI's position is that remote gaming "is not currently licensed within Ireland". Revenue's existing gaming licences cover in-person gaming only. Adults aged 18 and over can play at an online casino in Ireland, and Irish law doesn't make it an offence to do so. Our guide to Irish gambling regulations covers the changes in more detail.

So the casinos we rate are licensed abroad, and we check each licence where it's issued.

Our casino ranking gives the regulator, the licence number where we publish it, and what the register shows, with the date of the check. Where a site names no licence, or states a licence we can't match on any public register, the ranking tells you. Malta-licensed sites have to offer an independent dispute service, while regulators such as Anjouan and Curaçao generally give you less to fall back on, so read a casino's complaints process before you deposit.

How We Test Payouts

We deposit €50 into a real-money account, request a withdrawal and time it from the request to the money arriving in the account we chose. Each tested casino's entry in our casino ranking gives the method, the month and the result, for example "our Revolut withdrawal in October 2026 took 3 days from request to arrival". Each result is a single test with 1 method, so treat it as a guide to what to expect, not a promise.

A casino's stated time usually covers only its own processing. The payment provider then needs its own time to move the money, so the time to your account can be longer. In October 2026, a casino with a published processing time of 24 hours paid our test bank transfer in 50 hours from request to arrival. That's why our casino ranking shows the stated time and our test result side by side. A casino added to a ranking after a test round is left out of our payout comparison until we test it, and its entry shows the stated times, plus any withdrawal from its full review, labelled as such.

How to Read the Evidence in Our Casino Ranking

Every figure comes from 1 of these 3 sources, or is our own calculation from the casino's terms, and the wording tells you which.

Wording Where it comes from Example
"in our test"Our own deposit, withdrawal or check, with the month it was made"our Bitcoin withdrawal in October 2026 arrived in 5 hours"
"the casino states"The operator's published terms, payment or help pages"the casino states 12 hours for crypto"
Register resultThe regulator's licence register, Irish legislation or GRAI information"valid to 1 June 2027 (checked 11 October 2026)"
Our calculationWorked out by us from the casino's own terms"a €20 deposit means €700 of wagering"

Rating Guidelines for Sportsbooks

Sportsbooks are rated on the 8 criteria set out in the ranking section of our betting sites page. There are no published weights for them.

Criterion What we check
Brand Reputation & TrustHow long the bookmaker has traded, how it handles complaints and payouts, and what players report publicly
Licensing & Player SecurityThe GRAI register first, with the date of the check. If the bookmaker isn't there, we check the licence it holds instead on that regulator's register. We also check SSL encryption and the privacy policy.
Sports Coverage & Betting MarketsThe number of sports, the depth of markets on football, horse racing and GAA, live betting and cash out
Odds CompetitivenessPrices on the same markets compared across bookmakers, and the margin worked out from the odds
Bonuses & PromotionsWagering, minimum odds, time limits and maximum stakes on free bets and deposit offers
User Experience & Mobile BettingThe mobile site, any native app on the Irish App Store or Google Play, and how quickly you can build and place a bet
Payment Methods & Withdrawal SpeedDeposit and withdrawal methods, limits, fees and stated times, plus the method, date and result of any test withdrawal
Customer SupportChannels and stated hours, help pages, and responsible gambling tools you can set yourself, such as deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion

Since 1 July 2026, a bookmaker taking online bets from people in Ireland has needed a GRAI remote betting licence. GRAI licensees have to let you set deposit limits, and since 5 February 2026 they can't accept credit cards, including through e-wallets loaded from a credit card.

The margin is the bookmaker's built-in edge. If both sides of a 2-way market are priced at 1.90, the implied chances add up to 105.3% (1 ÷ 1.90 = 52.6%, twice), so the margin is about 5.3%. The lower the margin on the markets you bet on, the more of each stake comes back to you over time.

Keeping Ratings Up to Date

Licences expire, offers change and casinos rewrite their terms, so a rating is only as current as its last check. Before each update of our casino ranking, we recheck every licence on its register and reread the headline terms, and the ranking shows when that was. When a check changes a criterion, the score changes with it, up or down. If you spot something out of date, tell us through our contact page and we'll check it.

Editorial Independence and Affiliate Commissions

BetInIreland earns affiliate commissions. If you click through to a casino or bookmaker from our site and deposit, we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. No operator payment changes our ratings, our rankings or what we report, and every casino is scored on the same 10 weighted criteria.

Our editorial principles set out how reviews are written, fact-checked and edited, and our team page shows who does the work.

Operators can ask to be reviewed through our contact page. A review follows the steps above: we check the licence on the register, read the terms and score the site on the same criteria as every other casino or sportsbook. A request to be reviewed doesn't buy a place in a ranking or a higher score.
