2000 Guineas Betting: Runners and Odds

2000-guineas-horse-racing-logo

This 1-mile-long race is open to three-year-old colts and usually takes place on a Saturday somewhere at the end of April and the beginning of May. As mentioned in the introduction, in 2021 it is going to take place on the 1st of May. What makes this race such an entertaining one to watch is the fact that it attracts all of the best colts from the United Kingdom, Ireland, and far beyond.

In the table below, you can find the 2000 guineas runners as well as the odds that some of the best bookmakers are currently giving them. Please remember that odds are changing all of the time, so there is a chance that the odds in the table will not reflect the odds that you find at the bookmaker when you go and check. As well as the odds, we have also included the trainer for each horse, as this is important to know when it comes to choosing a horse to bet on. Obviously, there are some trainers that have had a lot more success than others. A maximum of 25 horses can compete in this race, so the vast majority of those in the table will have to drop out. The ones in bold are the ones who still have a chance of competing.

2000 Guineas Tips

Riders on their horses racing in the Guineas 2000

You can obviously just jump right in and bet on a horse because you like its name or you pulled it from a hat, but if you do this then your chances of winning will be pretty slim, to say the least. You will be relying totally on Lady Luck, and anyone who has been betting on horses for a while will know that it is not wise to rely on her to show up. Below you will find the tips that we really do recommend you read carefully before you go ahead and place your money on a horse to win. These (Newmarket 2000 Guineas tips) have definitely served us well in the past, so let's get cracking.

Do Not Pay Attention to Prep Runs

Successful (2000 Guineas ante-post) winners know that the best trainers will decide not to give their horses a prep run. Some will choose to do so, but the results of such races are of little value when it comes to looking at English Guineas winners. You might be highly encouraged by a great run at the Craven Meeting in the middle of April, but it is more than likely that all of the top trainers will not have risked their horse for the small prize money that is on offer.

The Greenham Stakes at Newbury is seen by many horse racing punters and bookies as a good indicator of who will do well at theevent. However, once again, all of the big racehorses will likely be left in their stables as their trainers will be holding them back for the prestigious races that will increase their stud value once they have retired from racing.

The Craven Meeting and the Greenham Stakes take place just 2-3 weeks before the big race, meaning that if a horse picks up an injury there is little chance that it will recover fully in time.

Take a Look at Two-Year-Old Form

To get an idea as to who stands a good chance of winning the 2000 Guineas, you should take a look at the two-year-old form. A big win for a two-year-old at the end of the season is a good sign as it is an indication that the horse went into the race without sustaining the injuries that happen to many talented youngsters and means that the horse should still have enthusiasm for running.

Frankel, who won the 2011 Guineas with ease, won all 4 of his two-year-old races. This included the Dewhurst Stakes and winners of this race that have gone on to win or come close at the Newmarket classic includes the likes of Mill Reef, Nikinsky, Pennekamp, El Gran Senor, Zafonic, Rock of Gibraltar, and Teofilo. So, the Dewhurst Stakes is definitely a race you should take a look at when you are looking to back a horse to win the 2000 Guineas.

The Juddmonte, another race for two-year-olds, is run at the end of the season at the Curragh racetrack in Ireland and it is also another good race to predict top performers for the following season. Sea the Stars won this race in 2009 and then the following season he went on to win the 2000 Guineas.

We are now going to take a look at St Nicholas Abbey to highlight further why you should look at the form of a horse at 2-years-old. He won the Juddmonte with ease and then followed up his victory with another win in the Group 1 Racing Post trophy. Fast forward seven months, and he re-emerged as a stunning three-year-old and started the race as one of the favourites. Okay, he went on to finish sixth, but the fact that he started as one of the favourites after such a strong performance as a two-year-old is evidence that the form of a two-year-old is seen as a good indicator as to how well a horse will perform in this race.

Previews

Below you can find some of the latest news regarding the 2021 2000 Guineas race. Some of the news could even come in handy when it comes to you making a decision about who you are going to put your money on.

Nando Parrado Has Strengthened Over Winter

Nando Parrado, according to his trainer Clive Cox, has strengthened up over winter but the ground conditions will still dictate where (and if) he will have his warm-up races before the QIPCO 2000 Guineas. Nando Parrado grabbed all of the headlines last year when he won the Group Two Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot with odds of 150/1, making him the longest-priced winner at Royal Ascot ever.

As we said above, some trainers choose not to prep their horses before a prestigious race such as the 2000 Guineas, but Cox decided that it would be best for Nando Parrado to have a prep race. He had the choice of entering him in the Crave Stakes at Newmarket on the 15th of April or in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury on the 18th of April. In the end, he decided to opt for the latter. Cox is very confident that Nando Parrado will put in a strong showing on the 1st of May.

A P O'Brien Looks for More Success

Throughout his long career as a horse trainer, A P O'Brien has trained 10 2000 Guineas winners, and in this year's event, he has 5 entries. The three favourites to win this race are Battleground, St Mark's Basilica, and Wembley, all three of which are trained by O'Brien, so it will not come as too much of a shock if he wins for the 11th time.

No Attendance This Year

Due to the current pandemic issues, there is no attendance allowed at Newmarket this year. While this is disappointing, there are still a number of ways that you can watch all of the action from your own living room.

Freeview: With fans unable to attend this year, the races will be available to watch on ITV. Head on over to their website to see when their live coverage of this big event will begin.

Each year, they show more than 8000 live races, with many of them being exclusive to Racing TV. This fantastic racing channel is available to Virgin Media and Sky customers in the UK and Virgin, Vodafone, and Sky customers in Ireland.
