Having first been played back in 2011, the Players Championship, currently known as the Duelbits Players Championship for sponsorship reasons, is a relatively new ranking competition. However, it has quickly become a favourite amongst the players and snooker fans all over the world. As well as getting to lift the prestigious trophy, the winner also gets to go home with a massive cheque that is worth £125,000 - even the runner-up still earns a consolation prize of £50,000. This event usually takes place in February, and the 2023 edition will be played from the 20th-26th of February at the Aldersley Leisure Village in Wolverhampton.

In the following snooker betting guide, we are going to take a closer look at the 2023 Players Championship, providing you with top odds from the best sports betting sites as well as the different markets and bets that you can make.

So, let's crack on!

💯 Players Championship Snooker Betting Odds

Due to how prestigious the Players Championship is, you will find odds and markets for it at any sports betting site that is serious about what they do. However, not all sportsbooks have been created equally, with some bookies providing their punters better odds. If you have taken the time to read any other sports betting guide of ours, you will already know how important it is to bet using the best odds possible since this is how you land the biggest profit if your bets go on to be winning ones.

The Players Championship is one that is full of quality snooker since, unlike other competitions such as the German Masters snooker, only the top 16 players are invited to take part in this tournament.

At the time of writing, we do not yet know the full list of 16 players that will be participating this year since it depends on what happens in the Welsh Open, which finishes on the 19th of February. However, what we do know is that the defending champion, Neil Robertson, will not be able to defend his title as he was knocked out early in the Welsh Open and he needed to win two matches in order to qualify. If you want to do a bit of Welsh Open betting, then feel free to check out our guide.

Below we have provided you with the best odds for Players Championship matches that seven of the best sports betting sites available to Irish punters are offering. However, since the final list of participants has not yet been set, we do not yet know who will be playing who in the opening round. As soon as we do, we will update the following tables for you, so be sure to check back in a couple of days.

🔮 Predictions for the Welsh Open 2023

We are aware that many of our readers like to have a bet on the outcome of big tournaments such as the Players Championship, so our experts have given you their own views on who they think will go on to win the latest edition.

2023 Players Championship PredictionThe 2023 Players Championship will take place between the 20th and 26th of February, and this is who we think will go on to win this event:

📈 Players Championship Snooker Betting Markets

Once the participants for the 2023 edition of this big snooker event have been finalised, you can start to place your wagers. If you could only bet on the winner of a match or the outright winner of an event, then things would end up getting boring pretty quickly, so you will be glad to find out that there are plenty of other betting options available when it comes to snooker. Below we have taken a look at three of the most popular markets for snooker betting fans.

Outright Betting

We’ll start with outright betting, which is undoubtedly one of the most popular Players Championship markets and one that can offer significant value to punters.

After all, the field is relatively small, with the event hosting the top 16 players in the world based on 12 months of ranking data. It’s from this small and competitive field that you’ll pick a winner, with early ante-post betting enabling you to back even fancied participants at relatively favourable prices.

**/whitebg**

"It’s also interesting to know that the players who enters the tournament ranked number one in the world rarely lifts the title, so there’s often value to be found in backing relative outsiders to win the Players Championship"

Over/Under Betting

Next up is over/under betting, which is represents a popular and versatile market that can be deployed in a number of different ways.

Given that all matches apart from the Players Championship final are contested as best-of-11 frame encounters, for example, you can wager on the total number of frames being played being under 8.5. This wager will come in so long as the match is completed in less than nine frames (which is statistically likely), creating a relatively simple way of earning an incremental return.

Similarly, you could wager on the eventual winning margin being over or under 3.5 frames. Betting on a smaller winning margin during best-of-11 frame matches will certainly unlock small but reliable gains, which is ideal for casual punters or those of you who are slightly risk-averse.

The Winner of the Next Frame (In-Play Betting)

We’ve already spoken about in-play betting at the Players Championship, with this offering access to a number of enthralling and highly lucrative markets.

One of the best examples of this exists in the form of next frame betting, where you bet on which player will win the next or ongoing frame in a particular match. Of course, you’ll need to place this type of wager early in the frame to access the best in-play odds, while you may also want to use a ‘cash-out’ option where available in tight frames that may place your stake money in jeopardy.

Just try to limit this type of in-play betting to matches that you’re actually watching, as this will enable you to better understand the course of a particular game and identify the player that holds the momentum at any given time.

✔️ Players Championship Snooker Betting Tips

If you do choose to leverage these markets and wager types at the Players Championship, you’ll need to ensure that you move strategically and take steps to minimise the risk of loss.

To help you achieve these objectives, our expert team here at Betinireland has laid out some expert Players Championship Snooker Betting Tips for you. These include:

Bet as Early as Possible When Backing Outright Outcomes

While the odds and draw for the 2023 Players Championship have yet to be confirmed, this event boasts a familiar format which enables us to visualise the fixtures and potential routes to the final for individual players.

For example, we know that the world number one according to one-year rankings data will play the world number 16 in the first round, while the second-ranked player will take on the world number 15. This pattern continues throughout the draw, so it’s possible to plot the initial fixtures and identify the players most likely to represent good value outright bets.

This also lends itself to more informed match betting, which is another undeniably popular market in the Players Championship.

With this type of approach, you can also bet early and in an informed manner, helping you to realise the full value of enhanced ante-post odds.

Deploy Over/Under Betting Selectively

Unless you’re wagering on the best-of-19 frames Players Championship final, every single match that you bet on will feature a maximum of 11 frames.

Given this and the competitive nature of the event, you’re likely to see particularly close matches and small winning margins, so we wouldn’t recommend betting on a selected winning margin being over 3.5 frames in any scenario.

However, wagering that under 8.5 frames will be played in a particular match may offer greater value, especially during the first round of the tournament when the top ranked players take on those on the fringes of the top 16.

Ultimately, you’ll need to be selective when deploying over/under betting at the Players Championship, basing your decision on the length of individual matches and knowledge of the two competing players.

Stick to Wager Limits

If you’re a fan of in-play snooker betting, it’s easy to get carried away with the vast range of choice and diversity available to punters. Even in the case of next frame betting, for example, you can place multiple wagers during every single match, causing the total amount staked to accumulate quickly in a short space of time.

If you throw in additional in-play bets such as the identity of the next century maker or coloured ball potted, you’ll see that the potential to wager huge amounts during the course of a single, best-of-11 frame match is considerable.

So, you’ll need to set aside a fixed proportion of your total bankroll for in-play betting, before adhering to this strictly and deploying this strategically over a set period of time. Both sums should be no more than you can comfortably afford to lose, as this enables you to wager freely and with genuine peace of mind.

📑 The Players Championship Snooker Format

As we touched on earlier in this guide, this is a competition in which the top 16 ranked snooker players in the world are invited to play in, which is why it is an event that draws plenty of attention. In other tournaments you will end up getting complete miss-matches as a player in the top ten could be drawn against someone who is ranked 65th in the world, for example. There are no such miss-matches in this competition, which leads to plenty of quality snooker and a lot of drama.

The player that is ranked first, which will definitely be Mark Allen, will take on the player that is ranked 16th, which, at this current moment in time is Mark Williams - although this can change depending on the outcome of the 2023 Welsh Open. The 2nd ranked player will take on the 15th ranked player, the 3rd ranked will take on the 14th ranked, and so on.

Like the majority of snooker events, this tournament has a knockout format, so the eight winners from the first round of matches will advance to the quarter-finals. The winner of match one will play the winner of match two, the winner of match three will play the winner of match four, and so on. The first round, the quarter-finals, and the semi-finals will be the best of 11 frames, while the final will be the best of 19 frames.

The 2023 Players Championship Snooker Schedule

The top 16 players are ranked according to their performances over the last 12 months. Below is the current top 16 ranking table but, as we said, this could change depending on what happens in the on-going Welsh Open. Once the 2023 Welsh Open has been completed, we will return to update this table accordingly.

🏅 Players Championship Snooker Top Players

While we do not know the full list of participants just yet, we do know most of them, and below we are going to take a closer look at three of the Players Championship favorites as well as a couple of dark horses.

Mark Allen

The man from Northern Ireland has been the inform player this season as can be seen from the fact that he is so far ahead of everyone else in the yearly rankings. During this season, he has picked up the World Grand Prix, the Northern Ireland Open, and the UK Championship, which means that he has now won a total of nine ranking titles in his career. He was also the runner-up at the British Open, while he got to the last four of the English Open, and the last eight of the Champion of Champions.

He has won the Players Championship once back during the 2015/16 season, and there are sure to be many snooker betting fans who will be putting their money on him to win it for the second time, considering the form that he has been in lately. One of Allen's best attributes is his strong mental ability - even if he finds himself behind in a game, he does not let the panic set in and will always believe that he can get back into the game and go and win.

Judd Trump

Judd Trump is considered by many to be one of the best players around at the moment, and this can be backed up by the fact that he has won 23 ranking titles to date. However, as you can tell from the ranking points that he has picked up, the last 12 months have not seen him have the success that he would have hoped for - although, he did win the 2023 Masters. His top strength on the snooker table is his long potting, and we are not exaggerating when we say that he is one of the best long potters in the sport.

With regard to the Players Championship, Trump has lifted the title on two occasions, once in 2017 and once in 2020, making him just the second player to achieve that feat - Ronnie O'Sullivan is the other player to have won this competition twice. The Rocket will need to make it to the final of the 2023 Welsh Open if he is to be competing alongside Trump at this year's event. Although Trump has not been at his best lately, on his day he is near enough unbeatable, and we envisage that many snooker fans will take a look at the Snooker Players Championship betting odds and put their money on him to become the first player to win this competition three times.

Mark Selby

Mark Selby might not be everyone's cup of tea due to the fact that he can be pretty slow at the table, but there is no doubt that he is a quality player that can beat anyone on his day. To date, he has 21 ranking titles under his belt, which includes having won the Snooker World Championship on four occasions. He struggled during the 2020/21 season with mental health problems, but he has seemingly put this behind him and is playing at a better level this season, which saw him win the English Open.

Many might suggest that he is mentally weak due to his recent issues, but we think the fact that has overcome his demons and is back playing at a high level once more indicates his mental strength. After everything that he has been through, he plays the sport now with a lot more freedom because he knows that losing a match is not the end of the world. He is yet to win the Players Championship, but he will be fancying his chances of putting his name on the trophy for the first time this time around.

Jack Lisowski

If you are a darts fan, then you will know what we mean when we say that Jack Lisowski is the snooker equivalent of Michael Smith. Everyone knew how good Smith is, but it took him nine defeats in finals before he finally picked up his first ranking title, and then his second one quickly followed. Any snooker fan who has watched Lisowski play will know that he has bags of quality, but he is yet to pick up his first ranking title – although, like Smith, surely it is only a matter of time.

This season he has made it to the semi-finals of the UK Championship, the German Masters, and the Masters but failed to progress to the final. The longer he goes without a ranking win, the more pressure he will be under to do so, and this might have an impact on how he plays. We fancy him to do well in the 2023 Players Championship, so putting money on him as a dark horse might be a good move.

Shaun Murphy

Shaun Murphy has nine ranking titles under his belt, which includes the World Championship that he won back in 2005, so it clear that he is a very capable snooker player. However, it has been three years since he last won a title, which was the 2020 Welsh Open. Since then, he has made it to a couple of semi-finals, a final, and some quarter-finals, which is really not good enough for a player of his quality.

At the time of writing, he had made it through to the quarter-finals of the Welsh Open, and he is playing some of the best snooker that he has played in a long while. In his Round of 16 match against Daniel Wells, who knocked out Trump, Murphy scored a 146 and then followed that up with a maximum break. If he can carry his 2023 Welsh Open form into the Players Championship, then there will not be a single player who will relish taking him on.

Previous Winners of the Players Championship Snooker

Arguably, the Players Championship is one of the hardest ranking events to win on the World Snooker Tour, as can be seen from the fact that there have been ten different winners in the past twelve years.
