The Shanghai Masters event is one of the most lucrative snooker tournaments in snooker, and the 2023 edition will be taking place from the 11th of September to the 17th. In this guide, I will give you my prediction as to who will go on and win.

🎱 Shanghai Masters Betting Preview

The top 16 players in the world are invited to take part in this event, alongside eight selected Chinese players - four from the Chinese Billiard Snooker Association and the four highest ranked players outside the top 16. As a result, quality is something that is not in short supply at the Shanghai Masters. Thus, picking a winner is not as easy as one might think.

Below I am going to take a look at four players who I think are the main contenders for the title.

1️⃣ Ronnie O'Sullivan

When it comes to the Shanghai Masters, there is one player who has ruled the roost, and that is Ronnie O'Sullivan. Some players love to play at particular events, and the Shanghai Masters is one that O'Sullivan has had plenty of success in over the years. In fact, he has won the previous three editions of this competition, and a total of four times. The Rocket is quality at the best of times, but when he is playing with a smile on his face, it will take a very strong performance for someone to knock him off of his Shanghai perch.

2️⃣ Mark Allen

When it comes to form in recent seasons, it is safe to say that Mark Allen is sitting at the top of the pile, and form is not something that should be ignored when you are deciding on a player to bet on. During the 2022/23 season, he won the Northern Ireland Open, the UK Championship, and the World Grand Prix, while he was also the runner-up in the British Open. When he gets in among the balls, he rarely makes a mistake, meaning that his opponents are always wary of missing a shot and leaving something on.

3️⃣ Shaun Murphy

Up until the 2022/23 season, Shaun Murphy had won just two tournaments in six years, which is too few for a player that has his capabilities on the snooker table. In 2023/23, he won the Players Championship and the Tour Championship, and he started off the 2023/24 season by winning the Championship League. His main weapon is his long ball potting, so his opponents will not want to leave him any long shots down the table. He is also a prolific break builder when he is on song.

4️⃣ Judd Trump

Judd Trump has a total of 23 ranking tournaments under his belt, so he definitely no stranger to winning big events. During the 2019/20 season, he lifted no fewer than six ranking event titles, which is the record for the most ranking competitions won in a single season. He is one of the most naturally talented snooker players of his generation, so will definitely have a good shot at winning this competition for the first time - he has finished as runner-up on three occasions.

📊 Shanghai Masters Winners

When betting on any event, it is always a wise move to take a look at the previous winners before you go ahead and put down your bet. Some players, as previously mentioned, excel at particular tournaments, and always seem to turn up. 🏆 Shanghai Masters Prediction

So, when it comes to the winner of this prestigious event, who do I think will be getting their named engraved on the trophy? Well, there is only one player that I would consider putting my money on, and that is Ronnie O'Sullivan. Yes, he has not been in the same type of form in recent years as the likes of Allen and Murphy, but this is his competition, and he always brings his A-game to China.

Chinese Snooker fans love The Rocket, so he will also have plenty of support from the home crowd - something which will spur him on even more. The player who prevents O'Sullivan from claiming a third consecutive Shanghai Masters title and his fifth overall, will have had to put in one hell of a performance.

My Shanghai Masters Prediction: Ronnie O’Sullivan to win.

⭐ Shanghai Masters Betting Tips

So, you know who I think will go on to win the 2023 Shanghai Masters, but the best snooker sportsbooks will allow you to bet on a lot more than the winner of a snooker competition. If you want to find out about the top bookmakers, then feel free to check out our in-depth bookmaker reviews.

Below are some other betting tips to keep in mind when the Shanghai Masters 2023 comes around.

Consider Betting on a 147

If you are new to the world of snooker, a 147 is when a player sinks 15 reds, 15 blacks, and the yellow, green, brown, blue, pink, and black during one visit to the table. It is a very hard feat to make, which is why you will usually find some pretty decent odds for it to happen - the great thing about it is that you do not need to predict the player that will land one.

Top Tip 1: Although the Shanghai Masters is a non-ranking tournament, the participants still take it extremely seriously because there is a lot of money on offer to the winner. As it is a competition that involves the top ranked players in the world, there is plenty of quality on display from the very beginning. Thus, I believe that there is a high chance that a player lands a 147.

These Are the Dark Horses

All sports events will come with dark horses, and some of the players to keep an eye out for who will not be among the favourites with the bookies include the likes of Ali Carter, Robert Milkin, Ding Junhui, and Luca Brecel. These players will enter the tournament with the confidence that they can beat anyone and go deep in the competition.

Top Tip 2: If you do not like the odds that are being offered for Ronnie O'Sullivan to win, or if you do not want to bet on him for whatever reason, then I would suggest that you think about betting on Luca Brecel as the dark horse. He has won just the four ranking titles, but he is the World Champion as he won the World Championship by beating Mark Selby 18-15 in the final. He has shown that he has the quality to win big events.

Who Will Underperform?

Some players are extremely talented, but seem to crumble when there is a lot of pressure on their shoulders. One such player that springs to mind here is Jack Lisowski - he can beat anyone when he is playing at the top of his game, but crumbles when the pressure is on. During the 2022/23 season, he made it to the latter stages of a number of competitions, but could not make it over the last few hurdles.

Top Tip 3: I do hope that Jack Lisowski goes on to win a tournament one day, but I am not holding my breath that this will be the one that he wins. He has a mental hurdle that he needs to get over - once he wins his first title, I am sure he will go on and pick up more trophies. However, until his first trophy is in the bag, I do not recommend putting your money on him to win.

The Highest Break

Another market that snooker punters can put their hard-earned money on is the player to score the highest break in the competition. Due to the difficulty of getting such a market correct, there are usually some pretty good odds on offer. The highest break comes with a prize fund of £10,000, so there is some added incentive for the players.

Top Tip 4: When it comes to the highest break, a player to consider betting on is Mark Allen as he is prolific whenever he gets in among the balls. In addition to this, he has very good concentration levels, so rarely misses a ball that he should be potting. So, keep this in mind if you decide to make such a bet.
