liverpools-historic-season

Liverpool look set to lift the 2025 Premier League title barring a monumental slip up between now and the end of the season. They are clear of 2nd place Arsenal by 12 points with 9 games to go. Liverpool have been very impressive this season and are very deserved leaders at this stage of the season. Liverpool have lost just once in the Premier League this season, and that was all the way back in September against Nottingham Forest, who themselves are having a great season. Let’s take a look at Liverpool’s season to this point, as well as comparing it to the best seasons in the club's history.

Liverpool’s 2024/25 Season

As mentioned, Liverpool have only been beaten on one occasion in the Premier League this season, but vulnerability has creeped in over the last few weeks. They were eliminated from the Champions League by PSG on penalties after a 0-1 defeat at Anfield. A few days later they were beaten in the Carabao Cup final by Newcastle and have not played since because of the international break. They will not play this weekend due to the fact they are no longer in the FA Cup so by the time they play local rivals Everton next Wednesday night they will have waited 17 days to respond to their Carabao Cup final defeat.

This might be exactly the break they needed to refocus on the task at hand, securing a 20th league title, which would put them level with rivals Manchester United for the most league titles in England. Liverpool have had some very impressive performances this season including 2-0 wins both home and away to champions Manchester City. They also had a big win 0-3 away to Manchester United at the start of the season. They have been the best team in the country by a considerable mile, even if the last couple of weeks have not been ideal for the Merseyside club.

Where Does This Season Rank

The competitiveness of the Premier League has been brought into question by some pundits and fans due to the fact that Liverpool have been so far in front over the last few months. The other teams in the league have not been able to live for Liverpool but this is more down to the fact that Liverpool have been brilliant, rather than the league being below par. This is in fact one of Liverpool’s best seasons in the club’s history when it comes to points tallies at this stage of the season. This points total of 70 points after 29 games is Liverpool’s 4th best season at this stage in the club's entire history.

This points tally is only better in the 18/19 Premier League season, the 1987/88 First Division season and the 19/20 Premier League season where they achieved 70,73 and 82 points respectively. In both 87/88 and 19/20 they went on to win the league title, whereas in 18/19 they finished 2nd, accumulating 97 points but still missing out to Manchester City. This achievement cannot be underrated considering Liverpool are a club of great history and success. The narrative that has surrounded their season being an underachievement in recent weeks is unfair, they are having a high-quality season.

This is in fact one of Liverpool’s best seasons in the club’s history when it comes to points tallies at this stage of the season.

Conclusion

In conclusion this Liverpool side should be commended for the season they are having. It is one of quality and an extremely high standard, that the other clubs in the league have not been able to match.
