Match prediction 22 of 48 of our Rugby World Cup 2023 betting series.
Steven's prediction accuracy 2023: ✔️ 84.00%.
The last match on Saturday, the 23rd of September, will be Pool B's game of South Africa v Ireland. This is going to be one hell of a test match, so for those that will be tuning in, remember that kick-off will be at 8 p.m. IST.
Making sure that proceedings run smoothly will be Ben O'Keeffe. He will be assisted by Mathieu Raynal and James Doleman on the touch lines and Brenon Pickerill in the TMO bunker.
The Springboks and the Irish have a rivalry that dates back to 1906, and in that time, there have been 27 internationals matches - 18 wins for the 'Boks, eight wins for the Men in Green, and one draw. In their last encounter, Ireland scraped a narrow victory, 19-16, so they will be hoping for a similar performance in this match to set them up for the knock-out stages. Can they do it or will the defending Rugby World Cup champions get one step closer to having their names on the Webb Ellis Cup for the fourth time? Without further ado, let's jump into my South Africa v Ireland prediction.

🔍 South Africa v Ireland Winner Prediction
Both sides are keen favourites to win this Rugby World Cup, and both will want lay early claim to the right to lift the trophy in October.
In the competition so far, South Africa have looked solid on the pitch, seeing off Scotland in their first round, 18-3 and trouncing Romania in the second round in a 76-0 whitewash. Ireland, too, have had powerful performances, also beating Romania in their first match, 82-0 and giving Tonga in week two a good hiding at 59-16. From these matches, Ireland are now top of the Pool B standings, with the Springboks trailing behind them in second - only by a single point.
This trend of Ireland in first and South Africa in second also carries over to the world rankings. The Irish have been the cream of the crop since they beat the All Blacks in a test series in June 2022, and they haven't lost an international game since then.
Looking at the teams selected, South Africa are going to go big and bold. On the bench, they are going with their idiosyncratic 7-1 split in favour of forwards - the controversial format that helped them steamroll the All Blacks at Twickenham in August. The good news for the Irish camp is that Finlay Bealham, Dan Sheehan, and Jack Conan are fit and could be ready for this week's challenge.
If you want to see rugby at its best, this will be the game to watch. It is going to be one of the fiercest contests not only in the Rugby World Cup but in all of 2023. Forced to pick a South Africa v Ireland winner, I would back Ireland to win, but I can see them doing the job by no more than six points.
✔️ South Africa v Ireland Betting Tips
1️⃣ Match Winner: Ireland to Win
As I am backing the bookies' challenger in this match, I think odds of Ireland to win at 2.22 at TonyBet Sports are worth consideration. Of all of the Rugby World Cup matches happening this week, this would be the one on which I would be most likely to have a punt, and this is the market on which I would be tempted to have a flutter. Remember that there are no guarantees in rugby, though, so no betting the shirt off your back. If you are going to gamble, do so responsibly.
2️⃣ Handicap Winner: Ireland to Win (+0.5)
I am not picking the bookies' favourites to win this match, so there are not any options to lengthen your odds with the handicap betting. Your best option would be Ireland to win (+0.5) at 2.10 at Betway, but then these odds are shorter than the outright match winner, so it would not make economical sense to take this option unless you fundamentally disagree with my prediction - in which case, you would anyway ignore my advice.
