Week three's penultimate match will be Scotland v Tonga in Pool B of the Rugby World Cup. The match will be on Sunday, the 24th of September, with kick-off at 4.45 p.m.
Officiating this match will be referee Karl Dickson, helped from the touch lines by Nika Amashukeli and Craig Evans. Reviewing the key decisions from the bunker will be TMO Ben Whitehouse.
Scotland and Tonga have come head-to-head in the past a total of five times. The Scots have claimed 80% of those games, with the Tongans only managed the one win. The last time they played, at Murrayfield, the home crowd saw their opposition take a complete beating, 60-14. 🔍 Scotland v Tonga Winner Prediction
Pundits may call this game less of a test match and more of a test mismatch. Scotland have really proved their worth under Gregor Townsend and find themselves in fifth place in the world rankings compared to the minnows of Tonga in 16th. Furthermore, the Scots have managed to string together four wins from six in their last international matches whilst Tonga have managed the exact opposite, winning only two and coming up second-best four times.
We could look at recent Rugby World Cup form and decide that this could be a close game, based on the fact that both teams have lost their first and only games so far, but when you consider that Scotland managed a tight 18-3 game against South Africa, the defending world champions, and Tonga were hammered in their first game against Ireland, 59-16, the gap in quality may be more apparent than ever.
The one thing that could really lift the Tongans in this match would be a typical Tongan rowdy crowd. Given they will not have their usual influential fan base in France on Sunday and that Scotland will likely get the better deal of the 16th man, all hope seems gone.
Tonga will bully Scotland with their impressive pack, but I can see Scotland weathering the storm and putting the Sea Eagles back out to sea. I believe Scotland will win this game by 30 points.
