We have reached the half-way point of the 2024 Six Nations with Scotland v England at Murrayfield on Saturday, the 24th of February. Kick-off will be 4.45 p.m.

The person officiating on the day will be Andrew Brace (IRFU), assisted by Chris Busby (IRFU) and Eoghan Cross (IRFU). Our TMO for this match will be Marius Jonker (SARU).

I think rugby fans of all persuasions are in for a treat with this match. It is going to be a brutal clash as England look to break the hoodoo around playing the Scots in the Six Nations Championship; Scotland, on the other hand, will have a fourth Calcutta Cup title in a row in their sights. Which of these auld enemies will step off the pitch in Edinburgh with smiles on their faces? Let us dig down into my Scotland v England prediction.

🔍 Scotland v England Winner Prediction

There is a lot at stake for both teams. Gregor Townsend's men will be out for blood after feeling they were robbed of a win and potentially the Six Nations title in their game against France. Equally, Steve Borthwick will want to prove that scrappy wins against Italy and Wales were not flashes in the pan but steady steps in England's rebuilding phase. Let us have a look at what the key predictors are saying for a winner.

History

To date, the two teams have played each other a total of 141 times since 1871. England have won 76 times and Scotland have won 46 times. 19 matches have also been drawn. That may make the advantage seem as if it is with the Red Rose, but recent history may shine a light on a different story. As mentioned previously, Scotland have won three Calcutta Cup outings in a row, so there will be confidence in their camp that they can go on to grab the rivalry trophy again. For this reason, I think history may be on the side of the Scottish.

Last Performances

Scotland MatchesResult
Wales v Scotland26-27
Scotland v France16-20
England MatchesResult
Italy v England24-27
England v Wales16-14

I do not feel that the last two rounds offer much insight. Scotland have won one and lost one compared to England's two wins, but then there is the argument to be made about Scotland having played France in the mix, the current second-place team in the table, compared to England having only narrowly beaten the two worst teams in the competition of late. I think the only point of note is that both Scotland and England have played Wales and won by one point and two points respectively, highlighting that this should be a close game.

World Rankings

The world rankings have Scotland in sixth and England in fifth. I do not feel there is enough in that statistic to be able to predict who will win.

Home Advantage

There is always a home advantage at Murrayfield when the proud Tartan Army are cheering on the Scots. This could even prove a more significant home advantage to Scotland, given some of the more inexperienced players in the England squad. For this reason, I think the setting of Murrayfield will play into Scotland's hands.

Weather

The forecast is 7°C with humidity and wind. This may play into the favour of the Scottish, given the wind could disrupt the typical English kicking game. England could look to adopt more direct running tactics to combat this challenge, but given the stubbornness over player selection and game tactics that we have seen from Head Coach Steve Borthwick in the Rugby World Cup last year and so far in this year's Six Nations, the Devil may be making iced teas from his fiery lakes before we see anything innovative from England. The weather, then, should be on the side of the home team.

Game Play Styles

Both teams will come out all guns blazing. The Scottish will work everything around their backs, especially their star player, Finn Russell. On his day, he can produce game-changing magic both from his hands and from the boot, which should provide a challenge for the English defensive line. England, however, will likely focus on the forwards, making use of the usual suspects to batter their way to the try line.

The key for both teams will be game management and not kicking away momentum at crucial stages in the match. I think Scotland's nine and ten will have the better read of the game in that aspect, which will ultimately mean that the home side look like they may come away with points to the good.

Winner Summary

Much as I would love to see another win for England, I think this may be the first of three nose-rubbings in the dirt for the Red Rose as their fixtures get progressively harder. I am inclined to go with the bookies with Scotland to win this match in what should be a remarkably close match. I can see Scotland coming away happy from Murrayfield by six points.

✔️ Scotland v England Betting Tips

1️⃣ Match Winner: Scotland to Win

The bookies have given us half-decent odds for this match, so I think I would be happy to have a go on Scotland to win at 1.59 at 1Bet Sports. I would have preferred something more in the region of 1.80 and above, but at least there is the potential for 50% net gain on offer if Scotland do as many expect they will.

2️⃣ Handicap Winner: Scotland to Win (-4.5)

I do not believe there will even be a converted try in it at the final whistle, so with my prediction of six points to the home side as it is, my tip is going to be Scotland to win (-4.5) at 1.90 at LegendPlay Sports. That means any win for Scotland of five points or more will see you take home almost double your money. Remember, however, that there are never any guarantees in rugby, so there is some risk involved. If Scotland lose, draw, or win by four points or less, you can kiss your stake goodbye. For that reason, remember to gamble responsibly!
