Derry take on Westmeath on Saturday 15th June, at 7pm in the neutral venue of Pairc Esler, Newry, county Down. The match will be refereed by Down man Paul Faloon. The match will be available to watch worldwide on GAA Go. Derry and Westmeath are winless in the championship this season, with both sides losing their opening two games of group 1 of the All-Ireland championship to Armagh and Galway. Both sides also failed to win any games in their provincial championship with Derry losing the Ulster Quarter Final and Westmeath lost the preliminary Quarter Final of the Leinster championship versus Wicklow. Derry were many people’s favourites to win the All-Ireland championship before the championship season began especially after their Division 1 league final victory over Dublin. This match will decide which team will have a spot in the preliminary quarter finals with Derry needing to win while Westmeath can afford to draw because of their superior score difference. Derry are the stronger side on paper but Westmeath have given a good account of themselves so far in defeats to Armagh and Galway losing by 5 and 4 points in each. Derry lost by 11 to Armagh last time out and lost by 5 to Galway in round 1 but they should be too strong for Westmeath.
🏆 Derry vs Westmeath All Ireland Championship Prediction
At the start of the year, this match would have been considered a comfortable and routine win for Derry but factors have made the result not as routine as once thought. Derry beat Dublin on penalties to win the Division 1 league title on 31st March, and since then, they have not won a game, losing 3 times to Donegal, Galway and Armagh. Derry have looked a shell of their former selves, and there are now rumours of unrest in the camp and behind the scenes problems with players. There were rumours that manager Mickey Harte would no longer be manager after defeat to Armagh, but this did not transpire, and Harte will be in charge for Derry’s game against Westmeath. If Derry fail to win this game they will be out of the championship, and that will most likely see the end of Harte’s reign as Derry manager as one of the pre-competition favourites, Derry would be out in the group stage. Derry need to get out of the group and then hope they can reignite their old form in the knockout stages of the All-Ireland. Derry are a team full of quality players who have not become poor overnight, so I expect them to get the win versus Westmeath.
🔎 Derry vs Westmeath Performance Analysis
Derry need to improve their statistical performances if they are not only going to beat Westmeath but also try and get back to being All Ireland contenders. Derry had 20 turnovers lost versus Armagh which is a possession lost either in the tackle or by an error. They had a total of 26 shots and scored 15 of them, which is a shot efficiency of 57%. If we compare these stats to their league-final victory over, Dublin we see a big difference especially with regards to turnovers lost. Derry had 13 turnovers lost versus Dublin in that game and that includes extra time. Derry are now making too many mistakes, and this is costing them, as seen in games against Armagh and Donegal, where handling errors resulted in multiple goals for both sides.
💯 Derry vs Westmeath All Ireland Championship Odds
The odds for this one amongst the bookmakers favour Derry. Derry are coming in at odds of around 1.25 whereas Westmeath are coming in at odds around 4.50. The bookmakers are expecting Derry to win but are not taking any chances with the pricing of Westmeath, not putting them as major outsiders. You would expect Derry to have enough to beat Westmeath but the unpredictability of Derry at the moment means the bookmakers cannot be too generous on the price they give for Westmeath. Derry are the favourites for this one, and this can be seen on the Irish betting sites.

✔️ Derry vs Westmeath - Betting Tips
Derry and Westmeath is an intriguing prospect. If you're unsure how the game will unfold or need ideas on how to use your free bets, here are some tips to consider:
Tip 1: Derry to Win
Derry have to ignite their championship campaign at some point and this is the last chance they have to do that. If they fail to beat Westmeath then their championship will be over. This match is a point of no return for Derry, their backs are against the wall but it is the same for Westmeath also. When the draw for the groups were made everyone expected Westmeath to finish bottom, but they go into this game in 3rd place on score difference. They have a chance for qualification and they would have taken this exact position before the start of the championship. Derry probably would not have. They would have thought they would be qualified by now and go into this game with a chance to finish top of the group, but this has not transpired for them. There will be pressure on both sides as one of these two teams' championships will be over after the match Saturday evening. This could lead to a tight and tense match, which I think will suit Derry. Derry have been too open so far in the championship, conceding too much and making lots of mistakes. A tight game might give them the chance to get back to basics and get the victory they need to spark their season into life.
Tip 2: Derry Handicap -3
I believe Derry will get the job done this Saturday, but it will not be overly comfortable and certainly will not be a hammering. Westmeath have equipped themselves well in their games versus Armagh and Galway especially considering these games have come after a shock Leinster championship exit at the hands of Wicklow in the preliminary Quarter Final stage. Derry need a strong win to give them the confidence in the latter stages of the competition if they make it there but this potential victory against Westmeath will not come easy. Westmeath kept Galway to 4 points with a late goal by Shane Walsh being the difference in a game Westmeath led for a large portion of the second half. They also kept Armagh to 5 points who then went and beat Derry by 11 points. Westmeath makes it difficult for the teams they face and they do have quality players such as Ronan O’Toole and John Heslin to trouble Derry. I think Derry will win a tight game with a few points to spare, and odds of 1.62 on a Derry handicap of -3 can be found on BoyleSports.
Tip 3: Derry to score first
This is an interesting one because, as mentioned, I expect Derry to put in a good performance on Saturday and start fast as they look to get a morale-boosting victory as well as a victory that gets points on the scoreboard in group 1 and gains them qualification to the preliminary quarter finals. It is hard to predict who is going to score first in a match as there are many factors at play there such as who wins the throw up, wind direction and maybe the referee giving a free, but if we look at Derry’s 3 championship games to this point you can see a pattern. Derry scored the first point of the game against Donegal in the Ulster championship and alo scored the first points of the game in both All Ireland group games against Galway and Armagh. In all three of their games, they started strong but could not continue this strong start and lost the games. This time, I think they will score first and use that as a platform to win the game. The odds for Derry to score first are 1.53 on Unibet.
