🏆 Kerry vs Donegal Prediction
There is no doubt that this has the feel of an All-Ireland-level match arriving in Round 1 of this year’s championship. Kerry and Donegal are the two teams many felt would be contesting the All-Ireland final in July, and it is easy to see why.
Right now they are the two best teams in the country, and May 23rd will be about whether Donegal’s system of play, their athletic intensity and their scoring threat will be enough to topple a Kerry side with some of the most dangerous forwards in Ireland, who have experience of closing out big matches in recent years. We could be in for an absolute classic in Killarney, which Donegal will be eager to win, but we think Kerry will have learnt from the league final when Donegal absolutely destroyed their kick-out and starved their star forwards of any decent possession and will have a strategy to stop Donegal’s athleticism and transition game from hurting them as much again. Kerry have the home advantage for this one as well, and that could be a massive factor given their championship record in Killarney. Since 1985, Mayo are effectively the only team that have won a championship match in Killarney, and Jack O’Connor will be keen to make sure his team don’t allow Donegal to add their name to that list. For those reasons, our Kerry v Donegal All-Ireland SFC prediction is a home win for Kerry, who will book their place in Round 2A of this year’s championship.
If Kerry fail to come up with a plan to combat the Donegal press and their tactical control, they could suffer like they did in the league final. Kerry are a different animal in championship football, however, and we expect that they will and will make sure enough ball gets to the Cliffords and Sean O’Shea for Kerry to win the match.

- Tip 1: Kerry to win by 1-3 points: We fancy Kerry to get the win on May 23rd, but not by much. Donegal showed a template on how to beat Kerry in the league final, but the big question is whether they can replicate that performance in Killarney once more. We think Kerry will be a different team to that league final, however, and could turn the tables in this one. We expect it to be tight between the team, so to back Kerry by 1-3 points, you can currently get a price of 4.50 with BoyleSports.
- Tip 2: David Clifford to score a goal anytime Donegal did well to restrict Clifford to 1-1 in that league final and generally managed to keep him away from the ball in dangerous areas as they ran out easy winners, but Clifford is a phenomenal player whom they will do well to shackle to that extent again. He has scored 2-13 in his two championship games to date this year and now has the luxury of having his brother, Paudie, back in the team, supplying him from deep.
- Tip 3: Back Donegal-Kerry in the HT/FT Market: We really think this game could go down to the wire in Killarney on May 23rd; such is the strength of both teams. We think Donegal may control large parts of the game with their tactical plan and athleticism and may lead at half-time, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Kerry’s attacking prowess and efficiency keeps them in the match before they step it up in the closing quarter to get the win and book their place in Round 2A.
If you agree, you can get a price of 5.50 with BoyleSports on the Donegal-Kerry HT/FT combination.
⚽ Kerry Squad Form
Kerry took home their 13th Munster SFC title in 14 years the last day out against Cork, with a strong second-half showing sealing their win in Killarney. They were without Tom O’Sullivan, Joe O’Connor and Seán O’Shea for the match against Cork, so they will hope that trio are back for the Donegal match. Gavin Whyte made another appearance from the bench as he looks to get back to his best, while Tony Brosnan came on and helped the side see out the Munster final, contributing 5 points. After their league final hammering, much was made of the fact that Kerry would have a stronger panel during the championship, and if the key trio of O’Shea, O’Sullivan and O’Connor are back, there is no doubt that it would give Kerry a better chance of beating Donegal.
⚽ Donegal Squad Form
Before the Down match, this Donegal side were starting to look frighteningly good as they go in search for their first All-Ireland since 2012. That loss to Down may just reinvigorate Donegal, however, as they remember how much work is still needed before they can claim this year’s Sam Maguire. Michael Langan was a huge loss in that game, missing it with an ankle injury, so Jim McGuinness will hope to have Langan back among the starting 15 in Killarney. One bright note against Down was the addition of Oisín Gallen, who hit 5 points, alongside Michael Murphy, who hit 7, and Conor O'Donnell, who scored 3 points. If that trio, alongside Langan, Peadar Mogan and Ryan McHugh, can stay contributing to the scoreboard, any fears about Donegal’s ability to maintain a scoring threat in the biggest matches could be alleviated.
