Galway’s bid for a fourth consecutive Connacht Football Championship title begins on April 6th, when they take on New York in the first round of the Championship. Throw in for the match will take place at 15:00 local time in Gaelic Park, New York. In this New York v Galway Preview ahead of the match, we will take you through the latest odds, some useful betting tips, as well as giving you an overview of their H2H stats for what should be an easy victory for Padraig Joyce’s Galway team.
🏆 New York v Galway Prediction
There should be a huge gulf in class when these two sides meet. New York have only ever won one Connacht Senior Football Championship match, against Leitrim on penalties in 2022. They should be no match for a high-flying Galway side, who should be in the reckoning for Sam Maguire come the end of the Championship.
Galway should be disappointed not to have secured a division 1 League Final berth ahead of the match but will travel to New York hoping everyone stays fit ahead of a Connacht Semi-Final against Roscommon on April 20th. Galway finished the League with three wins from seven games but should kick off their Connacht Championship with a win in New York. Their last meeting took place in 2015 when Galway won on a scoreline of 0-8 – 2-18, and we would predict another easy win as Galway kick off their bid for a 51st Connacht title.

✔️ New York v Galway Betting Tips
For those of you that have any free bet offers, here are a selection of New York v Galway betting tips ahead of the match. As was mentioned above, the odds have yet to be revealed, but we will try our best to provide you with some tips that may prove useful if you are having a bet on the match.
With any of the tips given, please keep an eye out for the prices, once the odds get published.
- Tip 1: Galway to Win: Even if Padraig Joyce makes some changes to his best fifteen for this clash against New York, the Tribesmen should still have far too much for a New York side we know very little about this year. Galway would probably have preferred a League Final to have another top-quality match ahead of a Semi-Final against Roscommon, but they will have to make do with this match in New York, which they should come through easily. The odds on a Galway win will be low given the difference in class between the two teams.
- Tip 2: Galway to win at Half Time and Full Time: Galway should have complete control in this game from start to finish. New York may come out and look to try and impose themselves early on, but Galway should easily weather any New York storm that may happen. Expect Galway to build a lead into half time and then expand it as the match goes on in the second half.
- Tip 3: Rob Finnerty to Score a Goal anytime for Galway: Galway may rest the like of Shane Walsh and Damien Comer for this match due to injury concerns, but in Rob Finnerty they have a lethal forward capable of scoring against anybody. Finnerty hit 1-6 against Kerry in his side’s last League game so should be full of confidence to put New York’s defence to the sword on April 6th.
🎯 New York Squad Form
Given the fact that New York’s last competitive game was against Laois in the Tailteann Cup on June 9th, 2024, we can’t really gauge how the side is faring heading into this Connacht Championship clash with Galway. Tyrone man Ronan McGinley is in charge this year, and as always, the challenge for New York is adapting to different players that may be available year in, year out.
⚽Galway Squad Form
Galway won three, drew two and lost two of their seven League games this season but will be disappointed not to have made a final after the fast start they had to the competition this year. Poor losses to Dublin and Kerry in their last two games mean another opportunity for a national title has slipped through Galway’s grasp. They will still be high on many people’s list for potential All-Ireland champions however, and with the players they have at their disposal, it is easy to see why. The big challenge for Galway will be trying to keep their star men like Damien Comer, Shane Walsh and Sean Kelly fit for an entire Championship. If they can, they have the potential to win the Sam Maguire Cup, come the end of the Championship in July.
👕 New York v Galway Predicted Lineups
With the revolving nature of New York’s playing squads each year it will be difficult to judge who will line out for the Exiles when the play Galway on April 6th. With that in mind, and with the changes expected in New York’s starting fifteen, below, we have compiled the New York starting fifteen from their last Tailteann Cup clash with Laois in June 2024. Galway for their part will probably put out a strong side but with an eye on tracking the fitness of some important players like Comer and Walsh for more difficult challenges late on in the competition.
