Ulster Championship Format

ulster-football-championship

The Ulster Championship usually starts at the beginning of May, but this year it has been put back a couple of months due to the pandemic situation. There are nine counties that make up Ulster, and all of them take place in the Ulster GAA Championship. There are four provincial championships in all, but this one is considered the hardest to win

This competition is a straight knockout tournament. A draw is done to see who will play who, with seven of the participating teams being drawn into the quarter-finals, while the remaining two teams play a preliminary match to see who will get the remaining quarter-final spot.

The winner of the Ulster Championship enters the quarter-final stage of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, while the remaining teams enter the All-Ireland qualifiers. However, due to the current pandemic issue, there has been a slight change in format and the team that wins the Ulster Championship will go straight through to the semi-finals of the All-Ireland Championship. Here they will meet the team that wins the Munster Championship.

Ulster Championship Odds

So, you now know what the Ulster Championship dates and fixtures are for this year's tournament, and there are plenty of great matchups that will keep Gaelic football fans across the country thoroughly entertained. However, there is a way that you can add to the excitement, and that is by doing a spot of Ulster Championship betting.

Gaelic football is not the world's most popular sport to bet on, but any respectable sports betting website that accepts players from Ireland will have Ulster Championship odds for their customers to make use of. Due to the competitive nature of this event, the odds that are given for each match are usually pretty enticing.

We are soon going to provide you with some betting tips that can be of great help when you are betting on this Gaelic football event. However, before we go ahead and provide you with such valuable information, we are going to give you two tables that highlight the odds that are being offered for the Ulster Championship winners and the top scorer. The latter is a really great market to place bets on as the odds are always pretty enticing since it is a tricky bet to get correct. Despite the difficulty levels, we really do suggest that you try to predict the top score because even if you do not win your bet, you will have plenty of fun following your selected player across the competition.

Since we are some distance away from the start of this competition, bookmakers are yet to give us their odds for each team as well as the top scorer. When they have been released, we will come back and update the tables below, so that you will know what type of odds you can expect if you are considering betting on these markets.

Ulster Championship Betting

Gaelic football is becoming more and more popular, even outside of Ireland, and the best betting sites are aware of this, which is the reason why there are now plenty of different markets available to bet on. When it comes to betting on the Ulster Championship, below are some of the more popular bets that you can put your money on.

Match winner: This kind of bet is really easy as all you are doing is trying to predict the team that will win the game. If you think that the match will finish in a draw, you can bet on that as well. Since these are knockout matches, the bet that you place is only valid for normal time. This means that you will not win your bet if the match is drawn at the end of normal time and the team you bet on wins in extra time.

Handicap: A handicap bet is similar to a match-winner bet, apart from a few conditions that are attached. If you make a handicap bet, you are giving one of the teams participating in the game a challenge that they need to overcome for your bet to be successful. For instance, you could give one of the teams a -1.5-goal handicap to improve their odds, meaning that they would need to beat their opponents by two clear goals.

First scorer: This is not a simple bet to get correct, but if you manage to do so then the rewards can be high thanks to the odds that will be offered. If you know little of the two teams that are playing, then you will probably only manage to win such a bet if Lady Luck is on your side. You can place a bet on the team that you will think will score first, but we must stress that since your chances of winning are higher, the odds will be lower.

Ulster Championship Tips

When we get closer to the time of this Championship starting, we will provide you with some tips that will hopefully help you to make a profit.

Free Bets Offers

So, we have discussed the format, fixtures, and odds for the Ulster Championship, and we shall now take a look at free bets. It is always fun to bet on Gaelic football matches, but it is even better when you are betting on Gaelic football matches without risking your own money in your sportsbook account.

Nowadays, bookies will give potential new customers free bets to entice them to open an account with them. However, free bets are not all created equally, so you need to do some research to ensure that you are taking advantage of the best deal possible when you register with a bookie. You will obviously not want to register with a bookmaker in order to bet on Gaelic football and then realise that they offer poor odds and a sub-standard Welcome Bonus.

You will be glad to find out that you do not need to do any research yourself as we have done all of the hard work for you. In the table below, you will be able to find what we believe are some of the best sportsbook deals around at this moment in time. You can use these bonuses on whatever sporting events you like, but if the Ulster Championship is being played when you decide to sign up with one of the following bookmakers, we really do suggest that you use your free bet money to bet on some of its fixtures.

Ulster Championship Free Bets
Bet365 Bet credits that are worth €50 Claim Now
William HillPlace a €10 bet and earn yourself free bets that are worth €40 Claim Now
888sportMake a €10 bet and claim free bets that are worth €30Claim Now
BetVictorMake a €5 wager and claim your free bet bonus worth €30Claim Now
UnibetPlace a wager and if it is a loser, you can claim up to €40 back as a free betClaim Now

N.B. Sportsbooks change their bonuses constantly in order to come up with innovative ways that they can stay that one step ahead of their main rivals. Therefore, there is obviously a chance that the bonuses you have just read about in the table above are not the same ones being offered on the corresponding sportsbook sites when you go to open an account. We do not have a lot of control over this as we do not have enough spare time to consistently check bonuses but do our best to do so on a regular basis.

Previews

Below we have given you some helpful information about the Ulster Championship.

Cavan Will Looking to Earn Their 41st Title

When it comes to Ulster Championship titles won, Cavan is sitting pretty at the top of the table by a country mile with 40 titles to their name. They have also finished in second place 23 times, which indicates just how successful they have been as a team down the years.

However, they have not been as dominant as they used to be in recent years. Yes, they are the reigning champions, but when they lifted the trophy in 2020, it was the first time that they had done so since 1997. They will obviously not want to have to wait another 23 years before lifting the trophy again, so they will be desperate to retain their title.

Donegal and Tyrone Will Have Something to Say

When it comes to recent domination, it is fair to say that Tyrone and Donegal are the two teams that Cavan have got to be wary of. from the last five tournaments, both of these teams have won the trophy twice - Tyrone won it consecutively in 2016 and 2017, while Donegal won it consecutively in 2018 and 2019. Cavan will be hoping that a similar pattern follows this year. Donegal also lifted the title in 2011, 2012, and 2014, while Tyrone lifted the cup in 2001, 2003, 2007, 2009, and 2010. So, both these teams have had a lot more recent success than Cavan.

Gearóid McKiernan and Rian O'Neill Will Battle it Out for Top Scorer

Gearóid McKiernan, who plays for Cavan, and Rian O'Neill, who plays for Armagh, were the joint top scorers in the Ulster Championship 2020, and they will be battling it out once again to finish top of the leaderboard once again. With the skills that they both have, it will be no surprise to see one of them crowned as the top scorer come the end of the tournament. Another player who will be looking to challenge them is Donal O'Hare, who plays for Down.

A Look Back at the Previous Year

As a result of the pandemic, the 2020 version of the Ulster Championship took place at the end of October and November. It was eventually won by Cavan, and in the tables below you can see how the tournament played out.
