Donegal will entertain Down in the fourth and final Ulster Senior Football Championship quarterfinal on Sunday, April 26th.

Donegal are the defending Ulster and National League Division 1 champions, while they were defeated by Kerry in the 2025 All-Ireland final. They’re certainly favoured to defeat in-form Down at O’Donnell Park, and we’ll analyse the latest odds in more detail below. We’ll also provide our own expert Donegal v Down prediction.

🏆 Donegal vs Down Prediction

The Tír Chonaill Men have developed a high-intensity and high-pressing style under coach Jim McGuinness, with this characterised by sustained attacks and an incredibly low number of turnovers per game. This was evident in the recent Division 1 final against Kerry, in which Donegal had just five turnovers from 33 possessions and ultimately prevailed by 13 points.

During the regular season, Donegal won five of their seven Division 1 matches, albeit by the relatively narrow combined margin of 24 points (at a rate of 4.8 per game). However, they went unbeaten in front of their own fans, while their 13 point thrashing of Kerry in the Divisional final represented a genuine statement victory.

Down also enjoyed a superb National League campaign, winning seven of their eight D3 matches to secure promotion (including the divisional final against Wexford). Forward Pat Havern led the line superbly for the Mournemen, scoring 57 points (1-54) and contributing 33.1% of his team’s total points.

However, Down have struggled with their kickout strategy at times this season, and this is an area where Donegal excel. The Tír Chonaill Men have also won four of their last five National League and Championship matches against Down since 2015, and our Donegal vs Down match prediction is that the home side will continue this run.

OUR PREDICTION: 🏆 DONEGAL TO WIN 🏆

✔️ Donegal vs Down Betting Tips

The operators featured in our sportsbook reviews have published a broad range of betting markets ahead of this match, including 1x2, totals and winning margin lines. Here are some Donegal vs Down betting tips to help you leverage these markets to your advantage.

  • Tip 1: Back Donegal With a -8.5 Point Handicap: We’ve already touched on Down’s struggles from kickouts this season, while Donegal’s ability to force turnovers and sustain attacks could exploit this. The Tír Chonaill Men will also have home advantage at O’Donnell Park, while corner forward Conor O’ Donnell was in exceptional form during the National League campaign and is expected to start this weekend. Given these factors and Donegal’s superior head-to-head record against Down, there’s value in backing the Tír Chonaill Men with a -8.5 point handicap at odds of 1.80 with Directionbet.
  • Tip 2: Pick Conor O’ Donnell as an Anytime Goalscorer: O’Donnell notched 29 points during the 2026 Allianz League campaign, scoring 4-17 across eight matches. He scored in three successive matchdays against Mayo, Armagh and Galway. His tally even included a clutch goal in the divisional final against Kerry, hitting a sublime left-footed drive into the right-hand corner of the net. Overall, he offers excellent value as an anytime goalscorer here, especially given Donegal’s ability to dominate matches and minimise their own turnovers.
  • Tip 3: Bet on Over 44.5 Points Being Scored: Most totals betting is likely to take place around the 44.5 points line ahead of the Donegal vs Down Ulster quarter final. After all, a total of 351 points were scored in the Tír Chonaill Men’s eight NL matches, at a rate of 43.8 per game. Down’s eight Division 3 games averaged 44.2 points. When you also consider Donegal’s superior overall quality and tactical dominance at kickouts, there’s value in backing over 44.5 points being scored at O’Donnell Park.

📈 Donegal Squad Form

Across their last 19 National League and Championship games, Donegal have won 15 and been beaten on just three occasions. This sequence includes a six-point victory over Down in the 2025 Ulster Championship last four, which preceded success over Armagh and a 12th provincial title overall.

In addition to their superb form, the Tír Chonaill Men will take on Down with a virtually fully fit squad to choose from.

Only Cairan Thompson will miss out as he continues his recovery from a cruciate injury, while Oisín Gallen, Ciarán Moore, Daire O'Baoill and keeper Shaun Patton are all expected to be available.

⚽ Down Squad Form

Down won their first six National League games in Division 3 this season, including three away matches. However, their total of seven victories (including the divisional final) were achieved by a combined margin of just 34 points (4.8 points per game).

This highlights the team’s ability to grind out victories in tight and keenly contested matches, but a clash with Division 1 Donegal represents a significant step up in class.

The good news is that the Mournemen also have very few injury concerns heading into the quarterfinal clash, although Carryduff forward James Guinness remains absent after suffering a cruciate injury back in January.
