⚽ Ulster Football Team Overviews
There are nine teams competing in the 2023 Ulster Football Championship but, in all honesty, when it comes to making Ulster Championship GAA winner predictions, some are just making up the numbers. For instance, when you look at the Ulster Senior Football Championship final betting odds in the table above, you will see that the likes of Antrim and Fermanagh are not given much chance of going on to lift the trophy.
In this section of this guide, I will look at four teams that, in my opinion, have a chance of being the Champions this year.
▶ Derry
Heading into the 2023 edition of the Ulster Football Championship, Derry are the favourites to come out on top. This, in my opinion, is not that surprising when you consider the fact that they are the reigning champions. They have only won this title eight times in their history, but in the past couple of years they have amassed a strong team and they will be confident of being able to go on and retain their title.
One of the reasons why they will be confident heading into this competition is the fact that they are coached by Rory Gallagher, who is considered to be one of the top managers on the circuit at the moment. He joined Derry in 2019, and it did not take him too long to stamp his personality on the team. The Ulster Football trophy that he helped to deliver in 2022 was their first success in the competition since 1998, so he is already considered to be a bit of a legend in that neck of the woods.
Gallagher has a number of quality players that he can call upon in defence of their title, and the ones that opposition teams will be quite wary about include Shane McGuigan, Conor Glass, Brendan Rogers (not the Leicester City manager), Ethan Doherty, and Niall Loughlin. If Gallagher can get all of these players to click once again, then they will be a formidable opponent for anyone.
▶ Armagh
Armagh are the second favourites with the top sports betting websites to go on and lift the title this year, and this is because they have been in some decent form as of late. To date, they have picked up 14 Ulster Football titles, but it has been 15 years since they last won. In fact, 2008 was also the last time that they made it to the final of this competition. However, history is there to be challenged, and Armagh have a decent shot, in my opinion, of doing that this year.
Their current manager is Kieran McGeeney, who is an Armagh legend as he captained the team to their one and only All-Ireland Senior Football title in 2002. He has been their manager since 2015, and he is slowly working his magic and converting them into a team that can compete with the very best. Yes, they were eliminated last year after their very first match, but they played an in-form Donegal who went on to narrowly lose in the final to Derry. McGeeney has a 53% win rate to date with Armagh, and this is only bettered by Joe Kernan.
Who are the players to keep an eye on for Armagh? Well, their top players include the likes of Greg McCabe, Niall Grimley, Rory Grugan, and Stefan Campbell. Something that Armagh have going against them though is the fact that they were drawn to play against Antrim in the Preliminary Round, meaning that they have to play a game more than their rivals. While I fully expect them to win this match, there is always the chance that some of their key players will pick up an injury.
▶ Tyrone
The third favourites to win this year's tournament are Tyrone, who are the joint second most successful team with a total of 16 titles under their belt. Their last win came in 2021, while they also won in 2009, 2010, 2016, and 2017. Therefore, over the last decade or so, they have managed to taste plenty of success in this competition. They were knocked out in the Quarter-Finals of the 2022 version, but you must keep in mind that they lost to Derry, who eventually went on to lift the title. This year they play Monaghan first up, who also have 16 titles to their name, but I'd back Tyrone to win this match.
Tyrone are somewhat unique in the sense that they actually have two managers and they are Feargal Logan and Brian Dooher. The former led the Tyrone under-21 team to All-Ireland success in 2015, and he will be hoping to do the same with the senior team this year. However, given the quality of the opposition, I am pretty sure that this will not happen. Dooher, on the other hand, is a Tyrone legend as he won three All-Ireland titles, five Ulster Football titles, and a couple of National leagues with the county. He was a player that would give it all out on the field, and this is something he expects from his players.
Who are the top players that Tyrone are pinning their hopes on this year? Well, if they are to go on to win the title again, they will need to likes of Cathal McShane, Darragh Canavan, Conor Meyler, and Brian Kennedy to be at their very best? Do I think they will go on to win the trophy? If they beat Monaghan, they will likely be playing against Derry, which will definitely be a tough ask to overcome.
▶ Donegal
The fourth favourites with the sportsbooks when it comes to Ulster Championship outright betting is Donegal, who finished in second place in 2022 as well as 2020. They won this tournament back-to-back in 2018 and 2019 to give them a total of 10 titles, and they will probably count themselves a little bit unlucky not to have picked up another title since - in their 2022 final against Derry, they ended up losing by just two points.
It really was one of those games that could have gone anywhere. This time around they start their campaign against Down and will expect to win that, before facing Cavan or Armagh (if they win their preliminary game) in the Semi-Finals.
Their manager since October 2022 has been Paddy Carr, and he picked up his first win as manager of Donegal on the 29th of January this year when they defeated Kerry, who are the All-Ireland reigning champions. Not a bad way to open your account, if you ask me. He has already shown his worth as a manager, and despite being fourth favourites to go on and win, him and his men will be confident of upsetting the apple cart. However, in my opinion, I do not see Donegal going on to win the Ulster Senior Football title this year.
They do have some top players that can go ahead and prove me wrong though which includes the likes of Paddy McBrearty, Hugh McFadden, Ciarán Thompson, and Michael Langan.
⭐ Ulster Championship Outright Betting Tips
When you are thinking about Ulster Championship final bets 2023, there is nothing preventing you from diving right in and putting your hard-earned money on any team to be victorious. However, if this happens to be your main gambling strategy when betting on sports, you should not be too surprised if you end up losing more than you end up winning.
I have gathered a lot of helpful knowledge during my years in the sports betting industry, and below you can find some Ulster Championship final betting tips that you should keep in mind when betting on this event. Not only can these tips help you place better bets, but there are also some that can help you to better manage your bankroll.
☑️ Pay Attention to Form
When you are gambling on any type of sport, form is something that you should definitely not treat lightly. A lot of novice gamblers will make the mistake of betting on a team based on their reputation alone, but this does not count for anything if they are not in form. So, before betting on a team to win a match or a tournament, help yourself out by looking at how the team and individual players have been playing in recent games. If you find out that they are not in any kind of form, the best thing to do is not bet on them.
Also, as well as form, you should also take some time to look at head-to-head records. Some teams seem to have a big psychological edge over particular teams, which can have a big say on the outcome of a match and the outright winner. If you think you have decided on who you want to bet on in your Ulster Championship outright winner predictions, check out their opening match and see what sort of record they have against their opponents. If they always seem to fair poorly against them, you might want to think about betting on something else.
☑️ Learn to Find Value
When you bet, always search for the value bets. A value bet, to put it quite simply, is one where the chances of a particular outcome occurring is higher that what the offered odds would suggest. Sports betting sites sometimes make mistakes with their judgement and will offer higher odds than they really should, and it will obviously work in your favour if you manage to learn to find the value bets. One of the ways to do this is to do a lot of research, and eventually the value bets will soon pop off the page at you.
Gamblers underestimate the importance of doing quality research, and those who ignore research will usually find themselves landing a lot of losses and very few wins. I am sure that you work hard for your money, so why not do a bit of research before making your final bet? It is extremely beneficial after all.
☑️ Manage Your Budget
To place any bets, you obviously have to have money, and this is why it is vital that you learn to manage your budget. If you put all of your available betting money on just one outcome and it is wrong, then your betting session will need to come to a premature end. Thus, when you are gambling, no matter the sport, I recommend that you create a budget with a value that you can afford to lose if luck is not with you. Then, you should decide on the bets that you want to make, and split your budget. By doing this, you will not spend all your money on the first wager that you make.
Another thing that is important to keep in mind is to never chase any losses. When your budgeted money is gone, stop placing bets, and do something else to occupy yourself. If you get into a habit of spending money to try to recover losses, then you will just end up getting into debt that you will struggle to get out of.
🏆 My Leinster Football Outright Winner Prediction
So, with all of what I have just said firmly in mind, what are my Ulster Championship final predictions? Well, the Ulster Championship is known as being one of the most competitive Gaelic football competitions in Ireland, so it is not an easy one to call. There are a number of teams that will rightly think that they can get their name on the trophy. However, my money, this time, is going to be on Derry because they are going to head into this event in form while they are coached by one of the best managers around. So, I would definitely not be surprised to see them retain their title.
If you are the kind of bettor that enjoys placing "riskier" bets, then I suggest you think about betting on Donegal. They have a pretty decent team and can beat anyone on their day, so it could be worth a punt. However, I will be sticking with Derry.
My Ulster Football outright winner prediction: Derry to win.
