📌 The Munster Championship Format and Fixtures

Original-banner-featuring-the-GAA-Munster-Football-Championship-coat-of-arms-next-to-an-image-of-a-player-tacling-his-opponent

Since 2021, the Munster Senior Football Championship reverted to its traditional knockout format, while the tournament eschews seeding and utilises an open draw that pits teams against one another at random.

Initially, four sides will be drawn at random to contest the quarter-finals, with the remaining two teams (usually those that contested the previous year’s final) receiving automatic byes to the semi-final stage. After this stage, the remaining four dreams will be drawn at random to contest the semi-finals, with those who emerge victorious ultimately competing in the showpiece final typically in late June.

As you’d expect, the winners of the Munster Championships also qualify automatically for the All-Ireland Super 8s later in the year, so there’s an additional incentive for the six competing sides.

The recent draw for 2022 will see Tipperary face Waterford in the first quarter-final, while Clare and Limerick will face-off in the second such match during the same weekend. Due the open nature of the draw, the winners of each quarter-final are scheduled to play against one another in the second semi, while last season’s finalists (Kerry and Cork) will contest the first semi-final.

Make no mistake; this is a heavyweight clash, especially given that these two sides have won the most titles by far and contested eight of the last 11 finals.

💯 Munster Football Championships Odds and Prices

munster-football-championship-coat-of-arms

Currently, not all of our listed sportsbooks have published ante-post odds for the Munster Senior Football Championship, although the majority are now starting to offer initial match and outright prices.

According to the initial odds, there’s little doubt that defending champions Kerry are the overwhelming favourites to claim their 83rd Munster Crown, with an average price of 1/10 being offered by sportsbooks. Of course, Kerry also shared the Allianz National Football League crown with Dublin earlier this summer, while the recent return of veteran manager Jack O’Connor (who has previously won four Munster titles with The Kingdom) has also caught the attention of bookies nationwide.

But who else could challenge for the title?

Well, Cork are the obvious second-favourites at an average price of 7/1, although ‘The Rebels’ have lost in a staggering eight final appearances since last lifting the Munster Cup after beating Claire in 2012.

Cork have shown immense consistency having appeared in 10 of the last 11 finals and an impressive 17 since the turn of the century (winning five of these overall).

Ten-times winners Tipperary are a distant third-favourite at odds of around 16/1, although they’re priced as high as 25/1 with some sportsbooks. While this may have something to do with the fact that ‘The Premier County’ has won just one title in 86 years, its last win did at least come as recently as 2020.

The remaining three sides remain rank outsiders to compete for the upcoming Munster Championship, with Waterford priced as high as 500/1 in some instances to win their second title.

Next up, it’s important to consider the most popular bet types and markets associated with the Munster Championships, as there remains a great deal of choice when wagering online. Here are just a few of the bets that we’d recommend to our punters.

☑️ The Top Points Scorer

This is one of the most popular individual sports betting markets, as you wager on the player who you think will score the most points in the Munster Senior Football Championship.

Last year, Sean O’Shea (who plays for Kerry and the Kenmare Shamrocks at club level) top scored with 28 points in total, just ahead of his talented teammate David Clifford (who plundered15 points overall).

This is a great market for punters who have knowledge of the teams and their best players, while there’s no doubt that stars from Kerry and Cork offer the best value for money overall.

☑️ Over / Under Betting

With this betting market, your chosen sportsbook will set a theoretical total points tally that will be scored in a particular game, while some bookies will also offer this type of wager on individual players.

Your task is to decide whether you think the actual points total will be higher (over) or lower (under) than the sportsbook’s estimation, creating an even-money wager with a 50% chance of being successful.

This is an incredibly simple and popular bet, and one that’s also ideal if you have knowledge of two competing sides, their form and average points totals scored across different games.

☑️ The First Points Scorer

If you’re a fan of in-play wagering, you can also bet on the identity of the first goal or points scorer in a particular game.

In general terms, this type of wager will typically be settled during normal time, while some sportsbooks will void this bet in instances where the player selected doesn’t start or play any part in the match.

You can usually find some competitive odds located within this betting market, so it offers real value for knowledgable GAA fans and those who follow sides in the Munster Championship.

✔️ The Top Munster Championship Betting Tips

Now that you understand some of the most popular available betting markets, the next step is to navigate these successfully and start placing wagers.

To help you on your way, our experts have provided some insightful betting tips and guidance on how to make the most of your bankroll.

🎁 Make the Most of Free Bets and Welcome Offers

As we saw earlier in the guide, our listed sportsbooks all offer generous welcome bonuses aimed at incentivising new players. Typically, these take the form of free bets, which can be deployed across various markets so long as minimum odds criteria are met.

These bets represent excellent opportunities to profit from the Munster Senior Football Championship, especially if you can identify welcome offers that aren’t subject to wagering requirements.

We’d recommend that you review the offers available across all of our operators, so that you can make an informed decision that best suits your bankroll!

N.B. bookmakers change up their bonuses all the time as they have to be creative so that they stay ahead of their main competitors. Therefore, there is the chance that the bonuses mentioned in the table above do not match the ones given on their corresponding sites when you go to register. However, we strive to keep all of our pages updated regularly.

⏲️ Time Your Outright Bets Right

With some sportbooks already offering ante-post outright prices, you may be tempted to place an early wager on the eventual winners of the Munster Championship.

While this can be beneficial in some instances, it really depends on the nature of your selection. For example, those of you who intend to bet on Kerry may be best served by waiting for a while, as their odds of around 1/10 are unlikely to shorten much and may even lengthen as the tournament draws closer.

Conversly, Tipperary’s highest price of 25/1 is likely to shorten considerably between now and the tournament in the wake of increased backing, so you may benefit from placing a timely ante-post bet now in a bid to maximise value.

📰 Follow the News

We all know that form is a key metric when appraising the value of particular odds, but it’s also important to follow the latest news relating to competing Munster teams.

This is particularly important from the perspective of match betting, as player injuries and suspensions can have a direct impact on individual games and cast a sportsbook’s odds in a whole new light.

Detailed analysis of individual player performances can also provide some much-needed insight ahead of games, especially when looking to target player betting markets.

🏁 Then and Now - A Brief History of the Munster Senior Football Championships

munster-football-championship-blue-on-white

While Gaelic Football can trace it roots back centuries, it wasn’t until 1884 that the GAA introduced a set of comprehensive and formalised rules for the sport. County committees were established two years later, laying the foundation for the inaugural All-Ireland Championship to be ran in 1887.

In 1888, a total of nine sides sought to compete in the All-Ireland Championship, creating the potential for huge logistical issues and costs for travelling sides.

To negate this, the GAA created provincial championships that would be operated by local committees, with the first Munster championship played later that year on Sunday, May 27th.

The first 15 years of the Munster Championship saw arguably the most equitable ear in the tournament’s history, with five of the six participating sides claiming the title. Cork were the most successful during this period with seven titles, while Tipperary followed closely behind with five.

Kerry also won their first title during this time (in 1892), before securing three successive championships between 1903 and 1905. This kick-started an era of dominance that has scarcely subsided to this day, with ‘The Kingdom’ having won a staggering 82 Munster titles and 45 more than their closest rivals Cork (37).

Incredibly, Kerry, Cork and Tipperary (10) have won 129 of the 133 championships contested to date, with the remaining four shared between Clare (2), Limerick and Waterford.

In the tournament’s most recent history, Kerry have also claimed eight of the last nine championships contested, with only Tipperary breaking this spell in 2020 when they won their first title in 85 years.

❓ Requently Asked Questions About Munster GAA Football Championship Betting

The Munster Championship is a fascinating tournament, and one that boasts numerous rules and a broad range of betting markets.

With this in mind, we’ve taken the time to answer some of your most-frequently-asked questions about the championship, its coverage and most common betting markets.

Who are the Most Successful Munster Football Teams?

As we’ve already touched on, Kerry are the single most dominant Munster football teams, with a staggering 82 titles since 1892. This is more than double the amount won by Cork (37), with these two giants having won 119 of the 133 championships contested to date.

Where Can I Watch the Munster Championships?

Currently, RTE and RTE2 hold the exclusive rights to broadcast live Munster Championship matches in Ireland, while Sky Sports Arena broadcasts games in the UK. You can also access extensive highlights of the championship on BBC Northern Ireland.

Who Should I Back to Win the 2022 Munster Championships?

Clearly, 1/10 shots and defending champions Kerry are heavy favourites to win again next year, although their price doesn’t offer much in the way of value. However, Cork can be backed at around 7/1, while Tipperary may provide a tempting ante-post bet at 25/1 with some sportsbooks.

Who are the Best Players in the Munster Championships?

Unsurprisingly, Kerry boasts the best selection of players, with half-forward Paudie Clifford one of just two Munster representatives to make Gaelic Football team of the year. His teammate David Clifford also made the cut, with his injury in the semi-final against Tyrone having a key impact on Kerry’s defeat (he had scored 0-8 before his withdrawal).

Has Clare Beaten Cork in the Championship?

Yes, Clare have beaten Cork in the Munster Football Championship, but only on six occasions. To put this into some perspective, Cork have beaten Clare 52 times in the Munster Championship.
