⚽ Connacht Football Team Overviews
There are seven teams that are competing to win the 2023 Connacht Senior Football Championship, but in all honesty a couple of the teams are only there to make up the numbers - they have very little chance of going on to lift the title. For example, fans of London and New York will hope that their teams can cause a huge shock and win the trophy, but you probably have more chance of winning the lottery.
In this section of this guide, I am going to have a look at the four favourites for this year's edition of the Connacht Football Championship.
▶ Galway
If you take a look at the Connacht Club Football Championship final betting odds in the table that I provided above, then you will see that Galway are the slight favourites to go on and win this year. This is not much of a surprise as they have had a lot of success in this competition having won a total of 47 titles to date - they are also the reigning champions as they beat Roscommon in a close final last year. They have made it to the final for the last seven years in a row, so I think they definitely deserve they tags as favourites.
They are currently managed by Pádraic Joyce, who was one of the best players to play for Galway. During his time as a player, he won two All-Ireland Senior Football Championship titles, six Connacht Championship titles, four Galway Football Championships, and was named as an All Star on three occasions. He has been managing Galway since 2019, and he has already instilled his winning mentality on the team. If he leads his county to more titles, he will cement himself as a Galway legend.
Galway have always managed to produce quality Gaelic football players, so Joyce really is spoiled for choice when it comes to selecting his playing XV. Some of the top players that opposing teams will be very wary off include the likes of Shane Walsh, Johnny Heaney, Damien Comer, Cillian McDaid, and Seán Kelly. If these players are playing at the top of their game, then there are not many teams that can lay a glove on Galway.
▶ Mayo
The second favourites to win this year's Connacht Championship is Mayo, and they have also historically had plenty of success in this competition. In fact, their total of 48 titles is the most of any team, and since 2010 they have won this tournament no fewer than seven times. With such a record, many probably would have expected them to be the favourites this year, but Galway are in slightly better form. Out of the teams that compete in this competition, I feel that Mayo are the only ones that can prevent Galway from living up to their favourites tag. Since the turn of the century, Mayo and Galway have won 18 titles between them.
Mayo are managed by Kevin McStay, who was a top attacker for Mayo back in his day. During his playing time at Mayo, he won the Connacht Football Championship on two occasions and was named as an All Stars on one occasion. He probably would have had more success with his county, but he had to retire from the sport when he broke his leg against Castlebar. Since he took over as Mayo manager in September 2022, he is undefeated in three games - one win and two draws. I feel that he will end up being a top manager for Mayo.
Who are some of the best players that McStay can choose from at present? Well, the players that I recommend their opponents to keep an eye on include Cillian O'Connor, Jason Doherty, Ryan O'Donoghue, Aidan O'Shea, and Stephen Coen. Mayo's first match is against Roscommon, which I think they should win, and then they will have to take on bitter rivals Galway in the semi-finals. What a game that should be.
▶ Roscommon
When you check out the Connacht Club Football Championship outright winner odds that the top bookies are offering, you will see that Roscommon have been put down as third favourites to win. Since this competition began back in 1888, they have won a total of 24 titles, with three of their most recent victories coming in 2010, 2017, and 2019. They made it to the final in 2022, but ended up losing to Galway by just three points. If a little bit more luck went their way, then they might have ended up with their 25th title.
Roscommon are managed by Davy Burke but, unlike the two managers above, he did not have much of a playing career as he suffered from a cracked kneecap and two torn cruciate ligaments. While this was obviously a shame for him, it gave him plenty of time to improve his managerial skills, and he is now respected as a manager across the country. During his brief career as a player, he was known to leave everything out there on the field, and this is a quality that he will try to instil in his players. It is definitely safe to say that those in charge of Roscommon chose a top man for the job.
The players that Roscommon fans will be hoping to lead them to more success include Ciarán Murtagh, Conor Cox, Diarmuid Murtagh, Enda Smith, and Shane Killoran. In all honesty, I do not see Roscommon overcoming Mayo or Galway. In fact, their first game of the competition is against Mayo, so I think that they will only play one game in this year's competition.
▶ Sligo
The fourth favourites with the bookmakers are Sligo, but when you look at the odds for Connacht Championship GAA betting, it is clear that the sports betting sites do not really give them a proper chance of going on to lift the title. When it comes to success in this event, Sligo cannot really claim to have had much success as they have only lifted the title on three occasions - their last win came in 2007, while they lost in the final in 2010, 2012, and 2015.
Tony McEntee has been the manager of Sligo since 2020, and when it comes to his playing career, he played for the Armagh senior county team. During his time playing for them he managed to pick up an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship win. He has a direct managerial style that helps to get the best out of his players, and he does not take any nonsense from anyone. To top it off, he is the type of manager that has no issue with dropping his best players if they step out of line.
Talking of best players, who are some of the top players that he has at his disposal? Well, the players that I would keep a close eye on includes the likes of Seán Carrabine, Paddy O'Connor, Alan Reily, Luke Towey, and Mikey Gordon. While I do not see them going on to lift just their fourth title, they are on the favourable side of the draw, which means that they will only meet the likes of Mayo, Roscommon, or Galway in the final. So, there is a chance they can make it to another final at least.
⭐ Connacht Football Championship Outright Betting Tips
When it comes to making your Connacht Championship GAA winner predictions, there is nothing stopping you from just randomly slapping some money on a random team to win and hoping for the best, but if this happens to be your main betting strategy, then do not be too surprised if you do not end up having much success.
I have spent many years in the sports betting industry and during this time I have managed to learn an awful lot. I would now like to take the time to share some of my top betting tips with you, and you really would be doing yourself a favour if you kept these in mind when you are making any Connacht Championship final bets.
☑️ Never Ignore Form
When you are gambling on any sport, it is extremely important that you take a team's form into account. Many novice bettors do not do this and, more often than not, it ends up being their downfall. A lot of novices will get tied up on a team's reputation, but a team's reputation matters for little when there is no form to speak of. So, before you do any Connacht Championship final predictions, do yourself a big favour and see how your selected team have been playing as of late. If, when you do this, you see that they are out of form, then it might be a wise move not to bet on them.
As well as a team's form, take the time to look at the head-to-head record because often particular teams will have some kind of psychological edge over another, and this can have a big day on who goes on to win a game or the whole event. Once you have decided on the team that you would like to bet on, check to see who they will play in their first match, and then check out their recent record over those opponents. If they seem to have the wood on them, then feel free to go ahead and place your wager.
☑️ Learn to Find Value
When you are placing Gaelic football bets or betting on any other type of sport, you need to learn how to find value bets. To those who are new to the sports betting world, a value bet is one where the chances of a particular outcome happening is higher that what the offered odds suggest. Sports betting sites can make mistakes and will offer their punters odds that are better than what they really should be. In such cases, it is obviously good for you if you can manage to spot these mistakes. How do you learn to do this? Well, the answer is to do lots and lots of research - knowledge is power, and the more you know, the easier it becomes to spot value bets.
Novice gamblers will often ignore how important research is, and these bettors will end up losing more money than they win. You work hard for the money that you have, so why throw it down the drain by being lazy and not doing any research? The Internet is right at your fingertips, so get into a habit of using it.
☑️ Learn to Manage Your Budget
If you want to bet on a sport, no matter what it is, you have to have funds in your sports betting account. This is the reason why you need to learn how to go about managing your money properly. If you decide to put all your betting money on one bet and it ends up losing, then you will be out of funds and will not be able to make anymore wagers.
Therefore, what I suggest is for you to get into the habit of coming up with a budget of an amount that you know you can afford to lose. Winning is never guaranteed when sports betting, so you need to prepare for losses. Once you have a value in mind, list the bets that you want to place, and then divide your budget among them. By doing this, you will ensure you have funds for all the bets that you would like to make.
Finally, please never chase your losses in an attempt to regain your lost funds. In theory, this might sound like a wise move, but in reality you will just end up losing even more money - this time, though, it will be money that you need for other more important things such as rent or bills.
🏆 My Connacht Football Championship Outright Winner Prediction
So, what are my Connacht Club Football Championship outright winner predictions? Well, I think that the winner of the semi-final between Mayo and Galway will go on to lift the title. It really is a 50/50 toss up between these two teams, but I am not the type of person that likes to sit on the fence. Therefore, if I were to bet on this year's Connacht Championship winners, my money would be on Galway to win. I feel that they are in better form than Mayo, and this will be enough to see them draw level with their rivals on 48 titles apiece.
My Connacht Football outright winner prediction: Galway to win.
