Russell built this win on Friday. His pole lap of 1:42.526 was 0.837 seconds faster than Charles Leclerc, the biggest pole margin of the year. Mercedes had looked strongest all weekend, and Russell topped both practice sessions on Thursday.

He made a clean start on medium tyres and pulled away while Oscar Piastri, up to second, held off the Red Bulls. Verstappen started eighth but passed Hamilton, Norris, Leclerc and teammate Hadjar in the first stint, then sat behind Piastri.

The race changed when Alex Albon locked up and hit the barrier at Turn 6. The first safety car let the leaders pit for free and erased Russell's lead of almost ten seconds. At the restart, Verstappen took second from Piastri. Colapinto then hit his teammate Pierre Gasly at Turn 1, who collected Norris, and a second safety car followed.

Russell controlled the final restart, but Verstappen stayed within a few tenths until the flag. Russell later said he lost turbo power after lifting for a late yellow flag, which almost cost him the race. Pole position paid off once again in Baku, and Russell turned it into victory by the smallest of margins.

The Baku City Circuit pairs a flat-out run of about two kilometres with the narrow castle section around Turns 8 to 10.
