Friday 4th August will host the penultimate day of the 2023 Glorious Goodwood festival, the highlight of which is arguably the Golden Mile Heritage Handicap. With the ante post prices having now been released, Golden Mile Handicap Stakes betting has gotten underway, with up to 77 currently in contention win a first prize of €77,310 (although the field will ultimately be whittled down to 20 or less). In this detailed Golden Mile Handicap betting guide, I’m going to take a look at the very latest odds while suggesting who I think will win the latest iteration of this thrilling race.

💯 Golden Mile Handicap Betting Odds

The ante post Golden Mile Handicap 2023 betting has made for interesting viewing so far, as no obvious favourite has emerged from what’s a large and relatively diverse field. Below, you’ll find the very latest Goodwood Golden Mile Handicap odds, with the shortest priced horse at present (the William Haggas-trained four-year-old gelding Lattam) backable at around 8.00.

🔮 Golden Mile Handicap 2023 Prediction

It easy to see why Lattam boasts the shortest Golden Mile Handicap betting odds at present, with the horse set to arrive at Goodwood in exceptional form. In fact, he has recorded consecutive top-three finishes since March 25th, winning two of these races at Curragh and Newcastle respectively.

In his last outing in the Class 2 Jenningsbet In Kippax Seaton Delaval Handicap at Newcastle, he was ridden superbly by jockey Daniel Tudhope, edging right in the final 110 yards before edging Spirit Catcher by a nose in the final strides.

His performance in winning the Paddy Power Irish Lincolnshire Premier Handicap at Curragh in March was arguably even more impressive, as he once again timed his run to perfection to beat the unfancied Saltonstall by a shoulder.

So, he has more than demonstrated his ability to stay the course and time his runs well over a mile, and he’ll definitely contend at Goodwood. However, he has never previously raced as part of such a large field, while he’ll be exposed to a much higher calibre of runner in the Golden Mile Handicap.

When Simon and Ed Crisford’s four-year-old gelding finished last in a field of 22 in the Pertemps Network Lincoln Heritage Handicap at Doncaster at the beginning of April, few would have fancied him to do well in the Golden Mile. Especially concerning was the way in which he weakened over 2f out after a confident start, but his subsequent recovery has put him back among the frontrunners at Goodwood.

First, he won the Class 2 Sky Bet Hambleton Handicap at York on May 18th, this time keeping inside on the final furlong and ultimately beating Point Lynas by a head. Then came a solid second place finish in the Buckingham Palace Stakes Handicap at Ascot in June, where only a drift to the right cost him ground and enabled Witch Hunter to win by ¾ of a length.

His trainer attributed this upturn in form to the changing conditions, with Croupier thought to fare better in the type of good-to-firm and firm conditions expected at Goodwood. He should also fare well at a track that’s famously quick, and my own Golden Mile Handicap prediction is that Croupier will win the Golden Mile and earn a fourth flat race victory in his 12th outing.

William Buick has also ridden Croupier impressively is his last two outings, and while this jockey hasn’t previously dominated the Golden Mile, he remains the second most successful performer at Goodwood over the last five seasons. During this time, he was ridden 40 winners and earned 79 placed finishes, from a total of just 173 outings.

My Prediction – Croupier to Win!

🔍 Golden Mile Handicap Betting Tips

While your choice of runner will be at least partially influenced by the live Golden Mile Handicap betting odds, it’s a golden rule of sports betting that you always conduct an in-depth study of the relevant form and data. Below, I’ve also built some insightful betting tips based on analysis of recent Golden Mile Handicap winners and other key trend factors.

Understand the Goodwood Course

Not all racecourses have ben created equal, and as I’ve already touched on, the five-furlong track at Goodwood is one of the fastest in the country. This means that pacey speedsters and sprinters tend to dominate here, especially in the type of firm going that’s usually prevalent during Glorious Goodwood in August.

Understanding this is key, as it affords runners like Croupier (whose best career results to date have been achieved in good-to-firm and firm going) a competitive advantage and may enable you to identify additional value in their ante post or starting price.

On the topic of courses, you should also note that the Newmarket track has produced the most Goodwood winners since 2023. More specifically, six runners who have prevailed in the Golden Mile Handicap had previously won in Newmarket during the month of July, so I’d recommend tracking each runner’s form right and their movements right up until you place your bets.

Four Golden Mile Handicap winners have also triumphed at Sandown in their previous outing, but at the time of writing, this would only really benefit outside runners such as the 34.00-shot Maysong (who won the Aspall Cyder 1728 Handicap here on June 17th).

Factor in the Field Size

Typically, the Golden Mile Handicap is one of the most difficult races to call at Goodwood, thanks in part to the size and diversity of the starting field. This year, approximately 20 Golden Mile Handicap runners have been entered to participate, creating a busy racetrack and making it much harder to effectively study the form.

Overall, the starting favourite has prevailed in just five of the last 20 Golden Mile Handicap renewals. What’s more, favourites have finished 17th, 13th, 16th and 10th since 2003, further highlighting the unpredictable nature of the race and the impact of fielding a large number of talented horses.

While 72% of the races completed since 2003 have seen horses priced lower than 26.00 prevail, this remains a relatively high starting price and could see unfancied runners like Safe Voyage, Magical Sunset and the aforementioned Maysong come into contention.

To account for such trends, you could consider placing each-way wagers on the outcome of the 2023 Golden Mile, as this sees you to recoup some of your money if your horse ‘places’ and minimise your risk by covering a much broader range of potential outcomes. This is a staple feature of horse racing betting, and it can help your bankroll to stretch much further.

Back Three to Four-Year Olds

The Coral Golden Mile Handicap is open to horses of both sexes, so long as they’re aged three years or older.

However, while two seven-year-olds have won during the last 10 years (namely Belgian Bill and last year’s victor Orbaan), this is a vanishingly rare occurrence as runners aged either three or four have prevailed seven times during the same period.

If we look back even further over the last 20 renewals of the race, we can see that 84% of the recorded winners were aged six or under. So, there’s no doubt that younger and faster runners have the edge at Goodwood, especially in the type of firm conditions observed during the summer.

This trend factor also favours many of the ante post favourites, including Lattam (4), Croupier (4) and Spirit Catcher (4). However, it’s not great news for the six-year-old Maysong, but the good news is that this basic dataset can be used to inform your picks and Golden Mile betting decisions!

Back Experience at a Higher Class

Interestingly, the trend factor that has produced 10+ winners in the Golden Mile Handicap is when runners had at least one career start in a higher class. In fact, this produced an LSP of +25.75, so it’s certainly worth considering when choosing your potential winners.

However, neither Lattam or Croupier have participated in a Class 1 racing during their careers, with this potentially counting against them in an evenly matched and competitive field.

But which runners have previously competed in Class 1? Well, 11.00-shot Covey took part in the Class 1 Jersey Stakes at Ascot in June, finishing ninth after falling away in the final furlong. Archie Watson’s three-year-old gelding Brave Emperor also ran in the Class 1 Hampton Court Stakes at Ascot last time out, although he finished 15th in a field of 16 after easing off down the stretch.

However, Brave Emperor’s age and Class 1 experience could make him an interesting each-way betting tip, especially at a starting price of 15.00.
