The Glorious Goodwood 2026 festival begins on Tuesday, July 28th, with the historic Goodwood Cup Stakes the main event on day 1. This year’s race gives horse racing fans the opportunity to see round 2 between staying heavyweights Scandinavia, trained by Aidan O'Brien, and Trawlerman, trained by John and Thady Gosden. Scandinavia got the better of Trawlerman at Royal Ascot, but who will come out on top over this slightly shorter distance of 2 miles?
In this Goodwood Cup preview, we will show you the latest odds ahead of what should be a mouthwatering rematch. We will also offer up some Goodwood Cup tips for those of you looking to have a bet on the big race, as well as try to point you in the right direction by discussing some of the recent Goodwood Cup trends. We will also give you our Goodwood Cup prediction, so why not read on to find out everything you need to know before the 2026 Glorious Goodwood festival begins?
🥇 2026 Goodwood Cup Prediction
To kick off our Goodwood Cup betting guide, we are going to give you our Goodwood Cup prediction as we count down to what could be the race of the week between Scandinavia and Trawlerman.
Given the fact that he emerged victorious over 2m4f at Royal Ascot, Aidan O’Brien’s Scandinavia is the much-fancied favourite to back up his 2025 Goodwood Cup win with another in 2026, according to many of the Top Irish Bookmakers available to punters. That is our view as well, which means our Goodwood Cup tip is for Scandinavia to back up what he did at Royal Ascot and get the better of Trawlerman once again.
The pair served up a race for the ages at Ascot, and racing fans could be in for another classic if the duo line up as expected for the Goodwood Cup. Trawlerman’s trainer John Gosden admitted after the Gold Cup that his stayer’s lack of a prep run before the race at the Royal meeting cost him as Ryan Moore rode Scandinavia to win by a head back on June 18th. The Gold Cup was over 2m 4f, with the younger Scandinavia battling back at the finish to claim the spoils, while this race is over the shorter 2m distance, which could suit Trawlerman in his bid to overturn the highly fancied favourite.
Rahiebb, who was a disappointment at Ascot, lines up against the top two once again as Roger Varian’s mount looks to recapture the form that saw him win the Yorkshire Cup in May.
Aidan O’Brien has favourably compared Scandinavia to his great staying superstar Yeats in the fact that he can stay at such a high tempo for so long in his races, and like Yeats, Scandinavia will become a two-time Goodwood Cup winner if he gets his neck in front on the Sussex Downs once more. He is priced as the 1.80 favourite when we look at the latest Goodwood Cup odds, and we think that is justified given the form he has shown.
OUR PREDICTION: SCANDINAVIA TO WIN
🎯 2026 Goodwood Cup Betting Preview
The Goodwood Cup is one of three Group 1s raced during the Glorious Goodwood festival, with the Sussex Stakes and Nassau Stakes the other two. It became a Group 1 race in 2017 and is viewed as one of the leading races for staying horses during the British flat season. Stradivarius, trained by John Gosden, is the most successful winner of the race, winning it on four consecutive occasions, while Kyprios, trained by Aidan O'Brien, is another recent multiple winner of the famous race.
Recently the race has very much been one for the punters, with 6 of the last 8 winners of the 2m marathon going off as favourite. It looks likely that something similar will happen again this year as the top-class duo of Scandinavia and Trawlerman top the list of 2026 Goodwood Cup runners with our listed horse racing betting Sites. Scandinavia and Trawlerman head the current Goodwood Cup betting markets, and if both show up on July 28th, we could be in for a fantastic highlight to day 1.
Scandinavia may be our pick to win a second successive Goodwood Cup, but he will have his challengers. With that in mind, below we have listed some of the other main runners that will feature at Goodwood.
Remember, before having a bet on any of the 2026 Glorious Goodwood runners, why not first check out our comprehensive online bookmaker reviews page? Here, lots of extra information about many of the top sportsbooks around can be found.
1️⃣ Trawlerman/John and Thady Gosden
The 2025 Ascot Gold Cup winner entered the 2026 renewal of the Ascot race without a prep run but still played his part in one of the best races of the season, narrowly losing to Scandinavia by a head in the finish. The fact that this race is run over 2 miles could be to the John and Thady Gosden-trained horse’s benefit, and his run at Ascot has seen him deservedly listed as second favourite behind Scandinavia in the latest Goodwood Cup betting markets. That Ascot run came after a break of 243 days, and he should be even better for it as he bids to turn the tables on the favourite.

2️⃣ Rahiebb/Roger Varian
The Roger Varian-trained Rahiebb was much fancied before the Ascot Gold Cup after his win in the Yorkshire Cup back in May and his second place to Scandinavia in the 2025 St Leger. That was the horse’s first run at 2m 4f, and he disappointed, finishing a tailed-off 8th. The trainer believes the 2m distance of the Goodwood Cup should suit him much better, and he could still come in for some each-way support if the disappointment of his run at Ascot has not soured the faith that supporters had in him before the Gold Cup.

3️⃣ Lazy Griff/Charlie Johnston
Charlie Johnston’s horse won the Coral Marathon at Sandown on July 3rd to book his place in this Group 1. The 2025 Derby runner-up and Irish Derby third-place finisher was one of the favourites for the St Leger last year before injury cruelly struck. The trainer has already revealed his preference to avoid really quick ground with the horse, and with the ground currently listed as 'good' ahead of the start for the festival, Charlie Johnston will hope that Lazy Griff can take his place.
🎈 Goodwood Cup Past Winners
Finding out about previous winners of the race can sometimes be a good Goodwood tip as we look ahead to the 2026 Goodwood Cup.
