The Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup is the highlight of the opening day of the 2023 Glorious Goodwood Festival (Tuesday, August 1st), with 26 runners currently entered to compete for a €283,550 first prize. With the ante post odds having now being published, Goodwood Cup betting has gotten underway in earnest, with several runners in contention to record a coveted Group 1 win. In this sports betting guide, I’ll take a closer look at the latest odds while making my own Goodwood Cup prediction!

💯 Goodwood Cup 2023 Betting Odds

The ante post Goodwood Cup betting odds make Gold Cup victor Courage Mon Ami the 3.50 favourite, with this four-year-old gelding having won all four of his career races since his debut at Kempton last September. This race will also see the John Gosden-trained runner resume his rivalry with Andrew Balding’s Coltrane, who pushed Courage Mon Ami all the way in the recent Gold Cup at Ascot before losing by just ¾ lengths. Marco Botti’s Giavellotto could also compete here, especially after the colt raced superbly to win the Boodles Yorkshire Cup Stakes last time out.

🏇 Goodwood Cup Betting Preview

The 2023 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup is likely to be one of the most keenly contested races at Glorious Goodwood this year, but which horses are most likely to contend for the €283,550 winner’s cheque?

Courage Mon Ami

John Gosden’s four-year-old gelding Courage Mon Ami boasts a perfect career record to date, albeit one that only spans four races. This sequence includes a stunning win in the G1 Gold Cup a Royal Ascot last time out, where he defined a starting price of 8.50 to take charge of the race early on and edge clear of Goodwood Cup rival Coltrane in the final 110 yards.

As Group 1 debuts go, this was pretty impressive, especially as the runner had never previously raced over more than one mile and six furlongs. A masterful performance by jockey Frankie Dettori also helped to mitigate Courage Mon Ami’s relative lack of experience at Ascot, and the resumption of this partnership could afford the horse a competitive edge at Goodwood.

Coltrane

Ultimately, Andrew Balding’s six-year-old gelding lost by just ¾ of a length in the Gold Cup, drifting to the right down the final stretch before being edged out by Courage Mon Ami. He had entered the race as favourite too, having prevailed in the Class 1 Gold Cup Trial (or the Longines Sagaro Stakes) in April and comfortably beaten Wise Eagle by 4¾ lengths.

Regardless, this will be the runner’s third G1 career outing, while Coltrane is also proven over the 2m, 4f distance and will surely benefit from the prolific combination of Balding and jockey Oisin Murphy. These two individuals have been the most successful trainer and jockey at Goodwood over the last five seasons respectively, with Balding recording 42 triumphs (and 110 placed finishes) in 263 runs and Murphy riding 47 winners from a total of 250 outings.

Giavellotto

Despite an ante post price of around 9.00, Marco Botti’s four-year-old colt Giavellotto is a runner who’s also proven in Group 1 company and will arrive at Goodwood in excellent form. To this end, he won the G2 Boodles Yorkshire Cup Stakes at York last time out, taking a keen hold early on before edging Eldar Eldarov by ½ a length after a thrilling duel down the straight.

However, he has only previously raced once over two miles or more, placing ninth in the Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan back in March after a poor showing. His tally of four wins and eight top three finishes in 10 rules races also earmarks him as a viable each-way rather than outright bet, and this is worth keeping in mind before wagering.

🔮 Goodwood Cup 2023 Prediction

Courage Mon Ami’s perfect, albeit fledgling, career record makes him an obvious favourite for the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup, particularly given the nature of his Gold Cup triumph at Ascot on June 22nd. Despite a relatively distant starting price of 8.50, he was ridden superbly by Frankie Dettori, taking a keen hold early on before holding off a spirited challenge from favourite Coltrane in the final 110 yards.

Incredibly, this was Courage Mon Ami’s first ever Group 1 outing, while he’d never previously ridden over more than one mile and six furlongs. However, he timed his run to perfection and stayed the 2-mile, four-furlong course superbly at Ascot, more than demonstrating his ability to successfully lead from the front at Goodwood.

Interestingly, Courage Mon Ami’s main Gold Cup challenger is also the most likely to defeat him at Goodwood, with Coltraine having won six of his 13 career flat race outings while placing in the top two on 10 occasions. He also earned the distinction of winning the Class 1 Gold Cup Trial (or the Longines Sagaro Stakes) back in April, being ridden to lead two furlongs out by jockey Oisin Murphy before prevailing by 4¾ lengths from Wise Eagle.

Clearly, there’s little to choose between these two horses, while the combination of Murphy and trainer Andrew Balding could provide Coltrane with a competitive edge if the partnership is resumed at Goodwood. After all, Balding has dominated at Goodwood during the last five years, recording 42 wins and 110 placed finishes from 263 runs. Murphy is also the single most successful jockey at the course during this time, recording 47 wins at 250 outings (at a rate of 19%) and placing on 130 occasions.

Overall, Balding and Murphy have combined to deliver 16 wins at Goodwood, with only trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick matching this during the history of the course.

As for the four-year-old colt Giavellotto, he certainly proved his own credentials over 1 mile and six furlongs when winning at York last time out. However, he has only ever raced over two miles once, placing ninth in the Group 2 Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan on March 25th and struggling from the outset. This explains an average starting price of 10.00, but Giavellotto has recorded four rules race wins in 10 outings and could offer value as a potential each-way bet.

This is a tough race to call, with much of the early Goodwood Cup 2023 betting activity seeing punters back either Courage Mon Ami or Coltrane to win. However, while both runners’ prices could drift further ahead of the race, the latter offers better value at around 5.00 and could also benefit from the potent partnership of Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy. So, my Goodwood Cup prediction is that Coltrane will win in a close and potentially epic showdown with his rival.

My Prediction – Coltrane to Win!

🔍 Goodwood Cup Betting Tips

Horse racing betting is always a challenging pastime, especially when wagering on evenly matched events such as the Goodwood Cup. However, the good news is that the Goodwood course has been widely analysed through the years, while this particular race has produced numerous trends that offer an insight into the likely 2023 winner. So, here are insightful Goodwood Cup betting tips to keep in mind!

Appraise Historic Trainer and Jockey Form

I’ve already touched on the relevant dominance of Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy at Goodwood since 2018, but this pairing has not enjoyed the same level of success in the Goodwood Cup alone.

In fact, it’s Courage Mon Ami’s trainer John Godsen who has enjoyed the most success during the last 20 renewals, claiming four wins and four further placed finishes from nine runs. Of course, these statistics are boosted by the imperious Stradivarius, who won the Goodwood Cup on a record four consecutive occasions between 2017 and 2020.

Unsurprisingly, the legendary Frankie Dettori is the Goodwood Cup’s leading jockey, who rode Stradivarius in 2019 and 2020 and has claimed four wins and eight places in 13 outings. However, this will be Dettori’s last year before retirement, and as he has yet to confirm any rides at Goodwood in 2023, jockeys such as Ryan Moore, Jamie Spencer and Murphy are the riders to watch this summer.

Just be sure to appraise potential jockey and trainer combinations before you engage in Goodwood Cup betting, while using historical performance to identify additional value in published odds.

Favour the Favourite in the Goodwood Cup

Interestingly, the last 20 iterations of the Goodwood Cup have seen the starting favourite prevail on 13 occasions, and finish in the top two 15 times overall.

This means that the favourite has won 65% of the time since 2003, which is quite a high number given the keenly contested nature of the race and its typically high-quality fields.

This trend would definitely favour the 2023 ante post favourite Courage Mon Ami, especially when you also factor in the quality of his trainer John Godsen and his record in this particular race. A whopping 79% of the last 20 winners had also previously won over at least one mile and six furlongs, which benefits both Courage Mon Ami and Coltrane.

Staying with odds, no runner has triumphed in the Goodwood Cup with a starting price higher than 8.00 since 2010, when Jim Crowley rode Illustrious Blue to success at 9.00. So, it’s worth giving even more weight than usual to the favourites here, especially those who are proven over the distance.

Check the Ascot Form

Dating back to 2003, the course which has produced the most winners of the Goodwood Cup is Ascot. In fact, 11 winners had run at Ascot last time out during this period, and while this may have something to do with Royal Ascot taking place just a few weeks before Goodwood, it also hints at some similarities between the two courses.

Both are right-handed, for example, while they also tend to favour quicker runners and have a pace bias on the round course and over longer distances.

So, it’s worth checking the recent and historic Ascot form of Goodwood Cup runners ahead of the race, particularly with Courage Mon Ami, Coltrane and 9.00 Subjectivist having all raced here last time out.

Interestingly, Newmarket has also produced four winners of the Goodwood Cup during the last 20 years, with this course also right-handed and ideal for long-striding runners. So, conduct a full analysis of each horse’s form and see how they’ve fared at these courses both recently and over time.

Consider the Draw Bias When Betting Late

Unlike the National Hunt season, nearly all flat races utilise stalls, with each runner being afforded their own starting stall at random prior to the beginning of the race.

This introduces the concept of draw bias, especially over longer races that traverse a left or right-hand bend. In the case of Goodwood, this track boasts a noticeable right-hand bend, which theoretically favours low or middle draws when racing over one mile, six furlongs or more.

So, while the middle stall five remains the most profitable at Goodwood overall (delivering a profit of +54.74 across all runners of races over one mile or more), lower draws tend to do a little better in the Goodwood Cup.

Previous Goodwood Cup winners Stradivarius and Trueshan triumphed from stall 2 in 2019 and 2021 respectively, so this is something to consider if you intend to engage in late Glorious Goodwood betting and just before the start of the race.
