📆 When Will the Lennox Stakes 2022 Take Place?

The Lennox Stakes takes place on the first day of the Goodwood Betting Festival just before the main race of the day - the Goodwood Cup. The Group 2 race is scheduled to take place at 15:00 and has a distance of 7 furlongs (1,408 metres). There are currently 13 runners, however we could see a further reduction over the next few days in the run up to the race.

🔍 Lennox Stakes Betting Tips for 2022

The Lennox Stakes, named after the Duke of Lennox, is one of the younger races held at the festival. It was established in 2000 as a way to take over the Beeswing Stakes, held in Newcastle, that was discontinued. The race has had been reclassified to a Group 2 status which was given in 2003.

Out of the eight races held on the first day of the festival, it has the second biggest prize pot at £180,000, which contributes to the total prize money which stands at £1,300,000.

Three year old horses have an assigned weight of 8st and 10lbs, while for horses older than three it’s 9st and 3lbs. Fillies and mares get a 3lbs allowance. Winners of Group 1 and 2 races since 2018 are assigned extra weight as a penalty which stands at 5lbs and 3lbs respectively.

No horse, jockey, or trainer have managed to secure a hattrick of wins, however, plenty have managed to secure two wins.

Here are some quick Lennox Stakes tips and information to bring you up to speed:

  • The Lennox Stakes is open to horses aged three and older.
  • The oldest winning horse in the last 10 years was seven, while the youngest was three. The average age of winning horses in this time span is 4.7.
  • The slowest winning time since 2012 was 1:31.02 by Kinross (2021) while the fastest was 1:24.55 by Es Que Love (2014).
  • There has only been one instance of a horse, jockey, and trainer trio to win more than once. This was in 2018 and 2019 with Gerald Mosse riding Sir Dancealot, with David Elsworth as the trainer.

🏆 Lennox Stakes Tips

Here we take a look at some of the top runners for the Lennox Stakes. We have compiled the racing history of the top three horses to help you decide which horse you will choose to wager on.

Sacred, trained by William Haggas, is a four-year-old filly with a current British Horseracing Authority (BHA) rating of 113. Out of the nine races Sacred has run, she has won three. Her most recent race at the Platinum Jubilee this year took place after a 308 day break. Despite many of her races at a distance around the 5/6 furlong mark, her recent starts in 7 and 8 furlong races in 2021 have been fruitful.

Sacred’s last three race results are as follows:

  • Fifth Place out of 24 runners in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes (2022).
  • First Place, by one length, out of 10 runners in the Hungerford Stakes (2021).
  • Seventh Place out of 11 runners in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas Stakes (2021).

Richard Hannon is the current trainer for Lusail - a three-year-old colt. His BHA rating has risen from 93 to 114 within the last year. Over 10 starts, Lusail has won four, however, he has failed to get to the top of the podium in 2022. His statistics show that this seven furlong race could pose some difficulties as the majority of his wins were for distances of 6 furlongs.

Lusail’s last three race results are as follows:

  • Third Place out of 11 runners in the D’Etreham Prix (2022).
  • Second Place out of 11 runners in the St James’ Palace Stakes (2022).
  • Sixth Place out of 15 runners in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas Stakes (2022).

Pogo is one of the older horses racing in the Lennox Stakes at six years old. Trained by Charles Hill, he could be in for a hattrick of wins. He has had 33 starts in his career and has won seven races. Since July of 2020, Lusail has held onto a BHA score around 114 - dipping slightly to 110 in August 2021 before rising to his current score of 115. With the possibility of a hattrick on the cards, Lusail looks in good form with his last two races also around the 7 furlong mark.

Pogo’s last three race results are as follows:

  • First Place, by two lengths, out of six runners in the Criterion Stakes (2022).
  • First Place, by 0.02 lengths, out of eight runners in the John of Gaunt Stakes (2022).
  • 15th Place out of 16 runners in the Godolphin Mile (2022).
