The Sussex Stakes is the highlight of day 2 at the 2026 Glorious Goodwood meeting, where 2,000 Guineas winner Bow Echo heads the market ahead of rival Gstaad. This year’s renewal has a real sense of cross-generational rivalry, with Bow Echo and Gstaad representing the top-class younger generation, while Opera Ballo, Queen Anne Stakes winner Ten Bob Tony and Lake Forest are part of the older group of horses looking to claim victory.
In our preview to the race, we will show you the latest odds as well as give you our own 2026 Sussex Stakes prediction ahead of the race on July 29th. We will also give you some other Sussex Stakes tips, so read on as the countdown to the 2026 race really begins.
🎗️ 2026 Sussex Stakes Prediction
We will begin our 2026 Sussex Stakes preview by giving you our big race prediction.
The Sussex Stakes may be a Group 1 open to horses from different generations, but given the form Bow Echo has shown this year, it is hard to look past George Boughey’s all-conquering three-year-old as this year’s winner. He is unbeaten in two starts this year and renews his rivalry with Gstaad from Newmarket and Ascot. Bow Echo came out on top in both those races, and it is hard to see Aidan O’Brien’s horse turning the tables in Round 3.
Opera Ballo may be the horse that causes the favourite the most problems, especially if he can use his undoubted pace in the right way around Goodwood. The favourite looks to be a horse that does his work with the minimum of fuss, however, and he looks set to continue his unbeaten run once more in Goodwood. Gstaad narrowed the gap between the pair at Ascot, finishing just a short head behind the unbeaten favourite. That represented progress after his 2 and ¾ lengths' defeat in the Guineas, but whether he can get past the market leader is another question.
There is little to separate the top three horses in the market when we look at the odds with the majority of the best bookmakers in Ireland, which means we could be in for a top-class race on July 29th.
OUR PREDICTION: BOW ECHO TO WIN
⚖️ 2026 Sussex Stakes Betting Preview
The Sussex Stakes headlines day 2 of the 2026 Glorious Goodwood festival, with the race a real race between generations this year. 2,000 Guineas winners Bow Echo and Gstaad head up the young brigade in this year's race, while the likes of Opera Ballo and last year’s winner Qirat lead the challenge of the older horses.
Aidan O’Brien has won the most of any trainer over the last 20 renewals, winning the race on 4 occasions. This year O’Brien has 3 Sussex Stakes entries, with his main runner being Gstaad. Gstaad is currently the second favourite when we look at the latest Sussex Stakes odds with many of the leading horse racing betting sites in Ireland. 2 out of the last 5 Sussex Stakes winners have been sent off as favourite for the race, while last year saw a 151.00 winner in Qirat.
There are plenty of challengers to Bow Echo in this year’s renewal, and below we have taken a look at 3 of the top horses in the field.
Remember, before having a bet on any of the 2026 Sussex Stakes entries, why not first check out our Irish bookmaker reviews page? Here, lots of extra information about many of the top sportsbooks around can be found.
1️ Gstaad/AP O’Brien
Aidan O’Brien will hope it is third time lucky against Bow Echo this season when the pair collide in the Sussex Stakes on July 29th. Gstaad has finished runner-up to the star of the division this year in both the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and the St James’ Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. The horse did manage to pick up the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh, beating Distant Storm by 3 lengths.

2️ Opera Ballo/Charlie Appleby
Big things are expected of Charlie Appleby’s charge heading into Goodwood, with the trainer reporting the four-year-old to be bouncing after his third in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. Before that third he had looked mightily impressive in winning the Bet365 Mile at Sandown, and if he has returned to form after his efforts at Ascot, he could be worth a look as we check out the 2026 Sussex Stakes odds.

3️ Zavateri/Eve Johnson Houghton
Eve Johnson Houghton’s star had to sit out Classic targets and Royal Ascot earlier this year. The trainer has had to be patient as she watched Bow Echo and Gstaad, who Zavateri finished ahead of in the National Stakes at the Curragh last year, sweep up the mile division this year in her star performer’s absence. Zavateri has not been seen on the racetrack since his second in the Greenham Stakes in April, but such is the trainer’s confidence he is going to be pitched in against not only the best in his age group but also some high-quality older horses also.
