📆 When Will the Sussex Stakes 2022 Take Place?

All eyes are on the Sussex Downs for the upcoming Glorious Goodwood Qatar Sussex Stakes on Wednesday the 27th of July. The Susses Stakes, also known as the ‘Duel on the Downs’, is a Group 1 flat race with a rich history since 1841. It is now one of the 35 races part of the British Champion Series.

The Sussex Stakes is a highlight within the flat racing season and sees countless outstanding horses, jockeys, and trainers come together for the mile (1,609 metres) race. Be ready to catch all the action from 15:35 on Day 2 of the festival.

🔍 Sussex Stakes Betting Tips for 2022

The horses will race on a right-handed and overall flat track. The majority of the course is slightly downhill until after the seventh furlong where the horses will have their endurance tested in run up to the home stretch with a small climb.

There is a weight allocation depending on the age of the runners. For three year olds, and the youngest age in which runners are allowed, it’s 9st 0lbs. For horses aged 4 and up, it’s 9st 8lbs. Fillies and mares have a 3lbs allowance.

No horse has been able to win twice in the last 10 years, however, we have seen some jockeys and trainers appear more than once. Oisin Murphy won last year riding Alcohol Free and again in 2018 while riding Lightning Spear. Jim Crowley has had two wins, riding Mohaather in 2020 and Here Comes When in 2017. Trainer Andrew Balding has had two wins in 2016 for The Gurkha and in 2021 for Alcohol Free.

As one of Europe’s most prestigious mile races, this is reflected by the hearty prize money which stands at a whopping £1,000,000 this year.

🏆 Sussex Stakes Preview

Baaeed, currently trained by William Haggas, is the standout favourite to win the race this year. Baaeed currently boasts eight unbeaten races in his career so far. Only two jockeys have ridden Baaeed; Dane O’Neill began with Baaeed for his first two starts and ever since, it's been Jim Crowley for the remainder. This horse is absolutely on top form and is touted as one of the best horses in the world.

With plenty of proven excellence on one-mile tracks, he looks to continue his 1st place streak. He enters this race as a four-year-old, which puts him right into the centre of the average age of winning horses over the last 10 years. It will certainly take a very special horse and rider to beat Baaeed to the top spot.

Baaeed’s last three race results were:

  • First place, by 1.75 lengths, out of 7 runners at the Ascot Queen Anne Stakes (2022).
  • First place, by 3.25 lengths, out of 9 runners at the Newbury Lockinge Stakes (2022).
  • First place, by 0.2 lengths, out of 10 runners at the Ascot Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (2022).

Coroebus is one such horse that has the potential to unseat Baaeed in his pursuit for another win. Over his five races, Coroebus has won four and placed second once. Trainer Charlie Appleby has a decorated history with many successes under his belt.

Coroebus’ last three race results were:

  • First place, by 0.1 length, out of 11 runners at the Ascot St James’s Palace Stakes (2022).
  • First place, by 0.75 lengths, out of 15 runners at the 2000 Guineas Stakes (2022).
  • First place, by 2 lengths, out of 10 runners at the Newmarket Autumn Stakes (2021).

This will be the third race for Order Of Australia this season. Before this year, he took a 248 day break. Out of 17 starts for five-year-old Order Of Australia, he has won five and has a variety of positions held, with two instances of finished dead last. Accomplished Aiden O’Brien is the current trainer.

Order Of Australia’s last three race results were:

  • First place, by 3.5 lengths, out of 5 runners at the Curragh Stakes (2022).
  • Third place out of 7 runners at the Ascot Queen Anne Stakes (2022).
  • Twelfth place out of 12 runners at the Keeneland Mile Stakes (2021).
