The UEFA Champions League betting clash between Benfica and Inter is one of the more intriguing quarterfinal ties, with the first leg scheduled to take place at the iconic Estádio da Luz on Tuesday, April 11th.

Neither side have been among the favourites to lift the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League, but both have produced impressive results during the tournament to reach the last eight. Benfica finished ahead of an expensively assembled PSG side in the group stage, for example, while Inter qualified ahead of Barcelona before eliminating a durable Porto side in the round of 16.

Interestingly, Benfica will be appearing in their second consecutive Champions League quarterfinal, while Inter have qualified for the last eight for the first time since 2010/11. But will the Portuguese side continue their impressive season with a home win in the first leg, or can Inter leverage all their nous and experience to avoid defeat away from the San Siro? I share my thoughts in this Benfica vs Inter preview.

🏅 Benfica Champions League Quarterfinal Leg 1 Preview

Benfica have enjoyed an exceptional domestic season to date, opening up a 10-point lead in the Primeira Liga ahead of bitter rivals FC Porto in the process. In fact, since a thrilling 2-2 draw Sporting Lisbon on January 15th at the Estádio da Luz, they’ve won nine consecutive league matches while scoring 26 goals and conceding just two.

Across all competitions in a stellar 2022/23 campaign, Benfica have won 36 of the 44 matches they’ve contested, drawing seven, losing just once and scoring an impressive 112 goals. This includes 35 in 12 UCL matches (including two qualifying rounds), while they’re also unbeaten in this season’s Champions League with 10 wins and two draws in total.

Unsurprisingly, this run also included a comprehensive 7-1 aggregate win over Club Brugge in the round of 16. ‘The Eagles’ won comfortably and by two goals to nil in the first leg in Brugge, before the Belgian minnows were thumped 5-1 in the return match three weeks later.

At the time of writing, however, Benfica do have a few injury concerns as they prepare for the first leg of the quarter final. The experienced Julian Draxler remains sidelined after ankle surgery, for example, while left back Mihallo Ristic is continuing his recovery from a hamstring strain. Striker Goncalo Guedes also faces a race to be fit for the first leg, while deep-lying forward Rafa Silva is currently laid low with the flow and may not be ready in time.

⚡ Inter Milan Champions League Quarterfinal Leg 1 Preview

Inter Milan have been steady rather than sensational during the 2022/23 campaign, and while they remain third in Serie A, they’re a distant 21 points behind league leaders Napoli and have little chance of retaining the title they last won in 2021. Overall, they’ve won 16 of 27 Serie A games this season, losing a hefty nine and experiencing defeat in three of their last four league matches.

However, the side have at least won the Supercoppa Italiana this season, thumping Milan 3-0 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on January 18th. They’ve also progressed to the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia, with a two-legged tie against bitter rivals Juventus set to be contested in April.

In the UEFA Champions League, Inter have performed generally well, particularly having been drawn in Group C against continental heavyweights Bayern Munich and a revitalized Barcelona. Crucially, they beat Barca 1-0 at home on matchday three, before earning a thrilling 3-3 in the Nou Camp the following weak to put them in pole position to qualify in second place behind Munich.

Having subsequently seen off Porto too, however, Inter have a number of injury concerns ahead of the quarter final first leg. In addition to missing long-term absentee Dalmart, for example, fellow left back Federico Dimarco could also miss out with an abdominal strain. Milan Skriniar (back) and Robin Gosens (leg) are also struggling to return to fitness in time, although there’s some good news in that centre back Alessandro Bastoni is poised to return from a hamstring strain at the end of March.

🆚 Benfica vs Inter Milan Key Matchups

Like most matches at this exalted level of competition, Benfica vs Inter quarters prediction is a contest that will be largely determined by the individual battles that take place on the pitch. So, here are three potentially influential duels to consider ahead of the first leg clash!

1️⃣ Gonçalo Ramos vs Milan Škriniar

I’m presuming that Milan Skriniar will have recovered from his back complaint ahead of the quarter final first leg, and this will put him on a collision course with Benfica’s prolific striker Gonçalo Ramos.

Ramos, who made waves in the 2022 World Cup after replacing Cristiano Ronaldo and hitting a hattrick in Portugal’s resounding round of 16 win over Switzerland, has enjoyed a stellar campaign for Benfica this season. This has featured 24 goals in just 36 appearances in all competitions, including seven in 12 UCL games and two in the second leg thrashing of Club Brugge last time out.

His speed and mobility will also provide a problem for Skriniar, who likes to dominate his opponents physically but isn’t the quickest. He’s also struggling with a back injury, so even if he’s fit, he may not be 100% and any potential vulnerability of this type could be exploited by Ramos.

This will undoubtedly be a seminal duel, as Ramos ability to find space in the attacking third will have a huge bearing on Benfica’s chances of winning the first leg.

2️⃣ Rafa Silva vs Nicolò Barella

A quick glance at Inter’s midfield in the second leg of their round of 16 tie with Porto revealed the absence of a discernible and specialist defensive midfielder. This could be an issue against Benfica, however, with deep lying forward Rafa Silva capable of exploiting the space between midfield and attack and possessing a keen eye for goal.

It’s likely that the talented Nicolò Barella will be tasked with closing Silva down when Benfica are in possession, as will negate the need for one of Inter’s three centre backs to step out from the back.

However, while he may be a little more defensively minded than teammates Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, he remains most effective in the attacking third and has six goals in 35 outings so far this season.

This could be a challenge for Inter, with Silva having scored 12 goals in 36 matches so far this season and six in just 12 UCL outings. Make no mistake; Inter cannot leave him unattended for a moment in the tie, while Silva will constantly drift and find pockets of space behind Ramos and threaten the defensive line (if he’s recovered from his current bout of flu, of course).

3️⃣ António Silva vs Lautaro Martínez

While striker Lautaro Martinez endured a difficult World Cup on a personal level after losing his starting place to Julien Alvarez, he remains a prolific focal point for Inter. To this end, he already scored 17 goals in 38 matches in all competitions this season, meaning that he remains on course to match or better last years’ haul of 25 goals in 49 games.

However, his record in Europe has been less impressive during this campaign, with Martinez having struck just a single goal in eight UCL appearances so far. What’s more, he’ll face Benfica’s impressive, 19-year-old centre half António Silva in Portugal, with the quick and mobile defender ably assisted by the experienced (and seemingly timeless) Nicolás Otamendi.

Inter may well be starved of the ball in the first leg too given Benfica’s possession-oriented style of play, but manager Simone Inzaghi is likely to deploy two strikers as part of his 3-5-2 formation. This will see Martinez partnered with either Edin Dzeko or Romelu Lukaku, who will provide a physical presence that occupies Otamendi and makes it easier for Martinez to isolate Silva.

Benfica will certainly have to be prepared to cope with Inter’s system, especially when their wing backs press high and combine with their two centre forwards to occupy the whole defensive line. Otherwise, Martinez could find the space he needs to affect the game and threaten the Benfica goal!

📈 Benfica vs Inter Milan Head-to-Head Statistics

Despite their illustrious histories, Benfica and Inter have only met three times competitively, and just once in Europe’s premier club competition. Incredibly, the latter meeting came as long ago as the 1964/65 campaign, when the two sides met in the European Cup final and Inter prevailed thanks to a first-half goal by the renowned Brazilian winger Jair.

The other meetings between the two sides came in the fourth round of the UEFA Cup in 2003/04, when Benfica and Inter did battle in a thrilling two-legged tie.

Although the first match ended in a tense goalless draw in Portugal, diminutive striker Nuno Gomes lit the blue touch paper in the return leg with a first half goal at the San Siro. Obafemi Martins equalised in first-half stoppage time, before strikes by Alvaro Recoba and the legendary Christian Vieri fired Inter into a seemingly decisive 3-1 lead with less than half an hour to go.

Gomes and Martins then exchanged quickfire goals before Tiago scored again for Benfica, leaving the match (and tie) tantalizingly poised with 13 minutes to go. Inter eventually held on for a 4-3 aggregate win, leaving them with two wins from three encounters with Benfica overall.

🏆 Benfica vs Inter Milan Prediction – Who will Win?

palmslots-sports-champions-league-prediction-benfica-vs-inter-promotional-banner

It’s now time for my Benfica vs Inter prediction in the first leg, with this match and overall tie one of the most difficult to call in the quarter final draw.

However, there’s no doubt that Benfica have a highly competitive team that’s used to winning, while their aggressive, possession-oriented style of play will most likely force Inter onto the back foot at the Estádio da Luz.

As we saw in the second leg of their round of 16 tie against Porto, however, Inter are also more than happy to defend deep and play exclusively on the counterattack. Sure, they were defending a 1-0 lead from the first leg in this instance, but I’d definitely expect Benfica to dominate the play and force Inter back into their own half as often as possible during their home leg.

Unlike Porto, however, Benfica have a genuinely prolific striker in the form of Gonçalo Ramos, and he could make all the difference if Benfica are able to sustain attacks high up the pitch and present him with enough chances in the first leg.

🔍 Benfica vs Inter Milan Betting Tips

If you’re going to wager your hard-earned cash on the Benfica vs Inter Milan first leg quarter final clash, you’ll need to make informative and hopefully rewarding selections. Here are some expert Benfica vs Inter betting tips to keep in mind.

1️⃣ Both Teams Not to Score at 1.91 with TonyBet Sports and BoyleSports

As you can see from my first leg quarter final prediction, I’m expecting a low scoring game at Benfica’s Estádio da Luz.

This has more to do with Inter’s defensive resilience and organization than Benfica’s lack of goal threat, with the ability of Inzaghi’s side to absorb pressure and control the space in behind evident during their 0-0 draw in the second leg clash with Porto.

So, although I expect Benfica to dominate the ball and force the pace at home, chances may be at a premium and it would be a surprise if either side was able to easily unlock the other’s defence.

Given this and the fact that neither side will want to sustain a decisive defeat in the first leg, I think there’s genuine value in backing both teams not to score at a price of 1.91 with either TonyBet or BoyleSports.

2️⃣ Benfica to win at 2.15 with Luckster and William Hill

It’s rare that straight match betting can deliver genuine value at this stage of the UCL quarter finals, but bookmakers have struggled to identify an obvious or odds-on favourite in the first leg clash between Benfica and Inter.

Sure, Benfica are priced shorter than Inter to win at the Estádio da Luz, but you can still back The Eagles at a competitive price of 2.15 with Luckster and William Hill Sports.

I certainly think that Benfica are the most likely winners at home, especially given their recent domestic form, attacking philosophy and the fact that they’ve won 18 (and drawn two) of their 20 games at the Estádio da Luz this season.

Just remember that these prices are likely to drift as the first leg draws closer, especially if Benfica maintain their form and continue to rack up domestic wins.

3️⃣ Benfica to Win by One Goal at 3.80 with Unibet

You can often find increased value by combining different match betting markets in a single wager, and the Benfica vs Inter quarter finals odds first leg match is no exception to this rule.

For example, you can currently back Benfica to beat Inter in the first leg by a single goal, at a market leading price of 3.80 with Unibet. This is a highly competitive price, and one that enables you to increase your potential match betting returns without taking on disproportionate risk.

This combination bet definitely makes sense, as it takes into account both Benfica’s firepower (they’ve scored 112 goals in 44 matches at a rate of 2.54 per game) and Inter’s undoubted defensive resilience.

While an early goal could change this outlook, I’m predicting a tight encounter that’s could well be settled by the odd goal!

🥇 Benfica vs Inter Milan Path to the Final

When the draw was made for the last eight of this season’s Champions League campaign, the prospective semi-finals were also unveiled as each side learned of their potential route to the tournament final.

The good news for Benfica and Inter fans is that they’ve entered the easiest segment of the draw, with the winner over two legs set to meet either AC Milan or runaway Serie A leaders Napoli in the last four.

The semi-finals of the tournament will be contested between May 9th and May 17th, with the final scheduled to take place at Istanbul’s imposing Ataturk Stadium on June 10th.

Whichever side progresses from this side of the draw will play either Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester City or Bayern Munich, and there’s no doubt that both Benfica and Inter will fancy their chances of reaching the showpiece final.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions About Benfica vs Inter Milan Prediction

Finally, I’m going to answer a few of your most frequently asked questions about the Benfica vs Inter quarterfinal clash. Hopefully, this will provide further insight into the first leg in Portugal and summarise some of the most popular betting markets!

1️⃣ Benfica vs Inter Milan Champions League Leg 1 – Who Will Win?

While there’s no obvious, odds-on favourite among the bookmakers, the sportsbooks at Betinireland clearly fancy Benfica to win the first leg clash in Portugal. To this end, they can be backed to prevail at a market high price of 2.15 with Luckster and William Hill Sports, while Inter have been priced as high as 3.80 to win with both PalmSlots Sports and Unibet.

2️⃣ What’s the best price for Benfica to beat Inter?

I’m not sure how long either Luckster or William Hill will price Benfica at 2.15 to beat Inter in the first leg of the teams’ quarterfinal clash, but these odds undoubtedly offer value in the current market. The issue is that this type of ante post price tends to drift as kick off draws closer and sportsbooks receive an influx of bets on Benfica to beat Inter!

3️⃣ Where Can I Watch Benfica vs Inter?

This intriguing first leg quarter final clash between Benfica and Inter will take place at Lisbon’s Estádio da Luiz on 11th April, with the game scheduled to kick off at 20:00 GMT. Ireland and UK viewers can watch the match live on BT Sport, while it’s also worth checking to see if your preferred sportsbook is streaming the content through its platform.

4️⃣ What are the Odds for Both Sides to Win the 2022/23 Champions League?

The outright betting odds confirm that there’s little between these two teams. Despite languishing way behind Napoli in Serie A and toiling to eliminate Porto in the round of 16, Inzaghi’s streetwise Inter side are the fifth favourites to win the 2022/23 UCL at an average price of 15.00. As for Benfica, you can back them to win their first Champions League or European Cup crown since 1961 at a similar average price of 16.00.
