🔍 French Ligue 1 Football Betting Tips
Now that I’ve explored the competition and its most popular markets, I’m going to provide some expert Ligue 1 betting tips to help you get the most out of your starting bankroll!
Back Marseille to win Without PSG
PSG have won nine of the last 11 Ligue 1 iterations, while they’re odds-on to achieve this objective again in 2023/24. However, they offer little value in the outright betting market, which is why some sportsbooks let you wager on which side will finish highest in the league outside of PSG. Marseille arguably offer the best value here at 2.75 with Betway, as they finished third last season while boasting the second-best away record in Ligue 1. They’re also second in the annual Ligue 1 table for 2023, while the only side above them (Lens) lost their top goalscorer during the summer transfer window and are in a state of transition.
Back Strasbourg to Finish in the Top 6
You can also engage in top six French Ligue 1 betting, with Strasbourg offering particular value in this market at 2.70 with LegendPlay. While the side finished 15th last season and only won nine games home and away, they’ve already recorded two victories in just three outings at the beginning of 2023/24. They’ve also been backed in the summer transfer window (by the same consortium that owns Chelsea), adding exciting youngsters Abakar Sylla and Emanuel Emegha to an already talented squad. Chelsea’s outstanding academy could also provide additional talent through the season, so Strasbourg could well compete for the top six and a European place during the campaign.
Get on Jonathan David to Win the Golden Boot
With Mbappe odds on to win a sixth successive Golden Boot, you may want to consider creating additional value in this market by placing an each way bet on an alternative contender. This will see you split your stake between backing a player to top the goalscoring charts and wagering on them to finish in the top three or four (depending on your chosen sportsbook). My own pick is Lille’s Jonathan David, with the Canadian striker placing third last year with 24 goals in 37 matches and continuing to ply his trade for an excellent team. He has also scored 54 goals in just 115 games for Lille, so get in on this action at a price of 9.00 with LegendPlay.
Ligue 1 Market | Bet | Brand and Odds |
---|---|---|
Outright Winner Without PSG | Marseille to win | Bet at 2.75 with Betway |
Top Six Finish | Strasbourg | Bet at 2.70 with LegendPlay |
Each Way Top Goalscorer | Jonathan David (Lille) | Bet at 9.00 with LegendPlay |

📈 Ligue 1 Betting Markets
Remember, there’s a huge array of Ligue 1 bets and markets to target as a punter, but what are the most common bet types and why are they so popular?
Outright Winner
With outright betting, you’ll wager on one or more outcomes in a particular league or tournament, including the eventual winner and which teams will be relegated. When engaging in outright Ligue 1 betting markets, you can also bet on which sides will finish in the top four or top six, while some operators also let you build your own bespoke outright wagers on request.
Top 4 Finish
Earning a top four finish has become a significant priority in the big fives leagues, as this affords teams the chance to compete in the Champions League. Because of this, betting on which sides will finish in the top four of Ligue 1 has become incredibly popular, with PSG, Marseille, Monaco and Lille the current favourites to achieve this objective.
Top Goal Scorer
This is the single most popular individual player market, and one that requires you to bet on the identity of the Ligue 1 top scorer in 2023/24. You can place an outright wager on this market or opt for an each way bet, which allows you to split your stake and potentially cash in if your selection finishes among the top three or four strikers.
Ligue 1 ACCA Markets
Accumulator (or acca) betting is also a popular Ligue 1 market, and one that can be deployed each and every gameweek. This allows you to combine between four and 20 match betting selections in a single wager, with the respective odds multiplied to create an extended price. By targeting short price favourites and combining these into your Ligue 1 acca, you can pursue increased returns without incurring too significant a risk.
Handicap Betting
Handicap betting is another way of creating value without overly increasing your risk. In this case, you’ll target Ligue 1 games in which a short-price favourite has a perceived advantage over their opponent. You can then apply a virtual handicap to the former, with this typically between -1.5 or -2.5 goals. If you set a handicap of -1.5 goals, the odds will be increased accordingly, while the team will need to win by two clear goals for the wager to be successful.
📄 Ligue 1 Competition Format
Ligue 1 adopts a familiar round robin format, in which each competing side plays against each other home and away. Historically, 20 teams have competed in Ligue 1, but this was reduced to 18 at the end of the 2022/23 season as four sides were relegated and two gained promotion to the top-flight.
Teams earn three points for a win and one for a draw, while the side that accumulates the most points over the course of the season will be crowned champions. The bottom two participants are automatically relegated to Ligue 2, while the team that finishes third from bottom will contend a relegation play-off with the third-place side in the second tier.
📆 Ligue 1 Fixtures
A glance at the Ligue 1 standings show that each side has played three matches so far, with gameweek four set to commence on September 1st with Marseille’s trip to Nantes.
Match | Date / Time | Prediction |
---|---|---|
15th September | PSG vs Nice | PSG to win with under 3.5 goals scored |
16thSeptember | Rennes vs Lille | Rennes to win and both sides to score |
16th September | Lens vs Metz | Lens to win with a handicap of -1.5 goals |

17th September | Marseille vs Toulouse | Marseille to win with a handicap of -2.5 goals |

🔁 Ligue 1 Transfers
There’s no doubt that Ligue 1 has been through a turbulent time of late, with the departure of Lionel Messi and Neymar from PSG having impacted on the league’s star quality and global appeal. The outstanding Lois Openda has also left Lens for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, while teammate Seko Fofana has joined the Saudi revolution following a €25 million move to Al-Nassr.
There are even rumours that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be on his way out of Marseille, while his former Arsenal teammate Alexis Sanchez has also rejoined Inter Milan. With Kylian Mbappe also increasingly likely to exit PSG next summer, the profile and stature of the league appears to be under immediate threat.
Of course, Ligue 1 has already undergone a significant transition following its reduction to just 18 teams, while this could be the start of far greater reform over time. While this is creating uncertainty, however, Ligue 1 is continuing to develop and attract new, younger talent, with Monaco having purchased the 22-year-old Folarin Balogun (who scored 22 goals on loan at Reims last year) and Gonçalo Ramos (PSG), Kang-in Lee (Mallorca) and Manuel Ugarte (PSG) also joining the ranks.
At the same time, the departure of two-thirds of PSG’s iconic frontline has changed the dynamics of Ligue 1, with PSG undergoing a huge transition under the stewardship of Luis Enrique. This could well create a more open competition in the near-term and change the nature of your Ligue 1 predictions, with Marseille, Monaco and Lille capable of challenging for the title in 2023/24. It’s worth factoring this into both your outright and individual match bets, as the final Ligue 1 table could ultimately look very different this time around.
⭐ Ligue 1 Past Winners
The first champions of French football were Standard Athletic Club, who won the 1893/94 USFSA Football Championship from the White Rovers. Football in France was contested as an amateur sport for 39 years, with Olympique Lillois winning the first ever professional title in the 1932/33 season. Across both amateur and professional eras, there have been 37 different French title winners.
