🔁 Ligue 1 Transfers
There’s no doubt that Ligue 1 has been through a turbulent time of late, with the departure of Lionel Messi and Neymar from PSG having impacted on the league’s star quality and global appeal. The outstanding Lois Openda has also left Lens for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, while teammate Seko Fofana has joined the Saudi revolution following a €25 million move to Al-Nassr.
There are even rumours that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be on his way out of Marseille, while his former Arsenal teammate Alexis Sanchez has also rejoined Inter Milan. With Kylian Mbappe also increasingly likely to exit PSG next summer, the profile and stature of the league appears to be under immediate threat.
Of course, Ligue 1 has already undergone a significant transition following its reduction to just 18 teams, while this could be the start of far greater reform over time. While this is creating uncertainty, however, Ligue 1 is continuing to develop and attract new, younger talent, with Monaco having purchased the 22-year-old Folarin Balogun (who scored 22 goals on loan at Reims last year) and Gonçalo Ramos (PSG), Kang-in Lee (Mallorca) and Manuel Ugarte (PSG) also joining the ranks.
At the same time, the departure of two-thirds of PSG’s iconic frontline has changed the dynamics of Ligue 1, with PSG undergoing a huge transition under the stewardship of Luis Enrique. This could well create a more open competition in the near-term and change the nature of your Ligue 1 predictions, with Marseille, Monaco and Lille capable of challenging for the title in 2023/24.
