🔍 La Liga Football Betting Tips
The odds associated with these markets can vary wildly from one sportsbook to another, so there’s an opportunity to optimise value when wagering early on in the season. I’ve also prepared some expert La Liga betting tips to help you get the most from your bankroll!
Get on Atletico to win La Liga
Most Liga betting activity on the outright winner is focused on defending champions Barcelona and current league leaders Real Madrid, but neither side has been overly convincing at the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign. Barca certainly look unbalanced and were unable to improve their squad during the summer, while Real lack a proven striker and will now have to do without the injured Rodrygo for a period of time. Conversely, Atletico look settled and have a unique meld of steel and style, while they top the annual La Liga table for 2023 with 57 points from 26 games. So, there’s genuine value in backing Diego Simeone’s men to win at 10.00 with William Hill Sports.
Rayo Vallecano to be Relegated
Last season’s relegation battle saw just nine points covering the teams’ placed 18th to 10th going into the final day, and while Rayo Vallecano finished in mid-table, they were only nine points away from the relegation places. Since then, the side has lost their influential head coach Andoni Iraola (to Bournemouth) and several key players, including full back Fran Garcia and Salvi Sanchez. Given this, the relative lack of recruitment and the side’s chastening 7-0 defeat at home to Atletico Madrid last time out, there’s value to be found in backing Rayo Vallecano to be relegated at 9.50 with LegendPlay.
Bet on Antoine Griezmann to Top the Scorer’s Chart
Robert Lewandowski is the current favourite to win the Pichici Trophy in 2023/24, with a flood of La Liga best bets having been placed on the legendary Polish striker to retain his crown. However, he offers little value at around 1.57, while Barca have struggled to consistently create chances so far this season. However, Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann got off the mark in his team’s 7-0 win at Rayo Vallecano, while he looks to be forming a potent strike partnership with Dutch forward Memphis Depay. He can also be backed at a competitive 13.00 with PalmSlots Sports, so I’d recommend placing an each way bet that will pay out if he tops the scoring charts or places in the top three or four.
La Liga Market | Bet | Brand and Odds |
---|---|---|
Outright Winner | Atletico Madrid to win | Bet at 10.00 with William Hill |
To be Relegated | Rayo Vallecano | Bet at 9.50 with LegendPlay |
Top Goal Scorer | Antoine Griezmann – Atletico Madrid | Bet each way at 13.00 with PalmSlots Sports |

BoyleSports is the Best Betting Site for La Liga Free Bets
BoyleSports includes football as one of 42 sports categories, while the sportsbook is home to guaranteed odds across all La Liga markets. LegendPlay is the Best Site for In-Play La Liga Wagering
When betting in-play, you may find that BoyleSports has a smaller range of markets when compared to other sportsbooks. Fortunately, sites like LegendPlay offer a wider range of competitively priced markets, while they also combine live statistics and datasets with virtual fields of play to help inform your bets in real-time.
The LegendPlay welcome offer also rewards you with a 100% first deposit match up to the value of €250. The site also offers enhanced odds on selected markets and regular price boosts.
You can also access a generous cash back welcome offer at Betway, up to the value of €50. 📈 La Liga Betting Markets
While some sites offer access to more La Liga betting markets than others, there are several wager types that are heavily represented across all sportsbooks. Here are four of the most popular.
Outright Winner
There are several La Liga outright betting markets, with the most popular requiring you to back the winner of the Spanish top-flight in a particular season. This is an even money market that’s incredibly straightforward, while other outright La Liga bets include top four wagering and backing the teams who you think will be relegated.
Goal Line Thriller Over/Under Goals
Over/under betting is an incredibly popular type of match bet, in which sportsbooks will set theoretical totals pertaining the number of goals scored in a game. Your job is to predict whether the actual amount scored will be over or under a particular threshold (most commonly 2.5 goals), creating an enticing even money market that offers huge valuable if you’re a knowledgeable punter.
Both Teams to Score (BTTS)
You can also wager on whether you think both teams will score (or not) in a particular game. This is another even money market that allows you to unlock much greater value in match betting, while you can inform this type of wager by appraising recent form over an extended period of time. You can also wager on a team to win and BTTS as part of a higher value combination bet.
Precision in Prediction: Correct Score
If you’re in the market for a high-risk but potentially high-reward betting market, why not wager on the correct score in a particular La Liga match? This requires you to make completely accurate Spanish league predictions, while the odds associated with this market tend to be high due the level of risk involved. If you do engage in this type of wagering, I’d recommend setting a nominal stake amount that reduces the potential scale of your loss without overly comprising your returns.
📄 La Liga Competition Format
La Liga follows the same round-robin format as other big five European leagues, as the 20 competing sides play each other home an away over the course of a nine-month season. Teams are awarded three points for a win and one for a draw, while the side that accumulates the most points will be crowned champions after the completion of 38 matches in total.
The three teams that finish with the lowest points tallies and prop up La Liga will be relegated to Segunda División, before being replaced with the top three sides in the second tier ahead of the next season.
📆 La Liga Fixtures

🔁 La Liga Transfers
Aside from Real Madrid, the purchasing power of La Liga clubs has dwindled of late, with this reflected by the summer spend statistics. Los Blancos are the only side to spend more than €100 million in the 2023 summer transfer window, with a total outlay of €129.5 million including the signings of Joselu, Arda Guler and the precocious midfielder Jude Bellingham.
Incredibly, lowly Almeria are the second highest spenders, although their total outlay of €38 million was offset by €43.10 million in player sales. Atletico Madrid invested €33.70 million in Antoine Griezmann, Samu Omorodion and left back Javi Galán this summer, although once again, they actually recorded a negative spend of -€42.30 million this summer.
Barcelona’s ongoing financial troubles mean that they’ve spent just €3.40 million on Oriol Romeu this summer, while adding UCL winner Ilkay Gundogan on a free transfer. They’ve also offloaded Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Griezmann and Franck Kessié for more than €82 million, highlighting a trend that runs throughout La Liga and has seen some significant talent depart the league in favour of EPL and La Liga clubs.
Villareal have also seen Pau Torres and Nicolas Jackson join Aston Villa and Chelsea respectively, for example, while Samuel Chukwueze has left for AC Milan. Karim Benzema, Matheus Cunha and Marco Asensio have also gone on to pastures new, changing the dynamic of the league while potentially creating opportunities for new and exciting young players.
⭐ La Liga Past Winners
The first ever La Liga championship was contested in 1929, when Barcelona won the first of their 27 titles. This is the second highest tally behind Real Madrid, who have lifted La Liga on 35 occasions and dominated the league with Barca since the turn of the century. In fact, Valencia and Atletico Madrid are the only other teams to win the title since 2000.
La Liga Primera Season | Champions |
---|---|
2017/18 | Barcelona |
2018/19 | Barcelona |
2019/20 | Real Madrid |
2020/21 | Atletico Madrid |
2021/22 | Real Madrid |
2022/23 | Barcelona |
Incredibly, only nine sides have ever won La Liga throughout its history, with Real and Barca joined by Atletico Madrid (11 titles), Athletic Bilbao (eight), Valencia (six), Real Sociedad (two), Deportivo La Coruna, Sevilla and Real Betis (all one). Barcelona are the defending champions heading into the 2023/24 season.
Rank | Club | Title Wins |
---|---|---|
1st | Real Madrid | 35 |
2nd | Barcelona | 27 |
3rd | Atlético Madrid | 11 |
4th | Athletic Bilbao | 8 |
5th | Valencia | 6 |
⚽ La Liga Top Goalscorers
The legendary Lionel Messi is La Liga’s top scorer of all-time, with 474 goals for Barcelona. He has also won eight Pichici Trophies and holds the record for the most goals scored during a single season (50 in 2011/12). Athletic Bilbao’s Telmo Zarra won this coveted award six times, while Alfredo Di Stéfano (Real Madrid), Quini (Sporting Gijón and Barcelona) and Hugo Sanchez (Real Madrid) have prevailed on five occasions.
La Liga Primera Season | Top Scorer | Club | Goals |
---|---|---|---|
2019/20 | Lionel Messi | Barcelona | 25 |
2020/21 | Lionel Messi | Barcelona | 30 |
2021/22 | Karim Benzema | Real Madrid | 27 |
2022/23 | Robert Lewandowski | Barcelona | 23 |
