A Provincial Championship Preview

The Gaelic football provincial championships are heating up as we begin to reach the quarter-final and semi-final stages in the provincial championships. There could be a few shocks on the cards as we reach the business end of the championships, and with the new rules in place, we could see more exciting provincial championship matches than we have seen in recent years. Let’s take a look at the upcoming matches, as well as the contenders in each provincial championship.

Munster Championship
Kerry has long dominated the Munster Championship, and their recent record only reinforces their status. They've claimed 85 of the 137 titles, an astonishing 62% overall. Even more impressively, Kerry has won 13 of the last 15 Munster championships, making them strong favourites to secure another win in 2025.
Fresh off their Allianz National League Division 1 triumph, Kerry enters the semi-finals in top form. Stopping them from lifting the “Munster Cup” for the 86th time will be no small feat for the remaining teams.
The Munster Championship is now at the semi-final stage, with the fixtures listed below.
- Cork vs Kerry
- Clare vs Tipperary
Ulster Championship
Every year, the Ulster championships is the most competitive of all the provincial championships, with multiple teams considered contenders before a ball is even kicked. The preliminary round has already been played, with Donegal beating Derry last weekend. This leaves us at the quarter-final stage with teams like Donegal, Armagh, Tyrone and Monaghan, all with a great chance of lifting the Anglo-Celt Cup. Donegal are more than likely the favourites, but defending All-Ireland champions Armagh will have a lot to say about that. Tyrone should not be ruled out, as well as Monaghan, who were excellent in their league campaign, gaining promotion from Division 2. Other teams such as Down, Cavan, and Fermanagh could go on a run, but it will be difficult due to the quality on display in this province. The quarter-final fixtures can be seen below.
- Antrim vs Armagh
- Tyrone vs Cavan
- Fermanagh vs Down
- Monaghan vs Donegal
Connacht Championship
The Connacht championship is a slightly easier one to call with 3 teams out of 7 genuine contenders for the Nestor Cup. These are Galway, Roscommon, and Mayo, with all 3 of these reaching the semi-finals this year, having defeated New York, London, and Sligo, respectively, in their Connacht championship quarterfinals. It will be a tight championship to call with the fourth team in the semi-final Leitrim given no hope of lifting the championship. One of Galway, Roscommon, or Mayo will likely be taking home the Connacht Championship. The semi-final fixtures can be seen below.
- Galway vs Roscommon
- Leitrim vs Mayo
Leinster Championship
The Leinster championship is probably the easiest provincial championship to call, with Dublin having won every championship since 2011. They are a class above the others in this provincial championship, with Dublin the only team in Leinster who are in Division 1 of the Allianz National League. Offaly and Kildare were promoted to Division 2 for next year, meaning they will join fellow Leinster teams Meath and Louth in that Division. Westmeath were relegated to Division 3 for next year, joining Laois and newly promoted from Division 4 Wexford. Next year, Longford, Wicklow and Carlow will all play in Division 4. This means that 6 out of the 11 teams in the Leinster championship play in the bottom two Divisions, which makes Dublin’s dominance no surprise. Louth got closer to Dublin last year, and Kildare, Meath, and Offaly are all having strong seasons to this point, but expect Dublin’s Leinster streak to continue. The quarter-final fixtures can be seen below.
- Wicklow vs Dublin
- Kildare vs Westmeath
- Meath vs Offaly
- Louth vs Laois

Conclusion
Exciting times are ahead in the world of Gaelic football as we once again get into championship season. The goal for all the teams involved in their provincial championship will be to lift the trophy, adding to the history of these great competitions.
