Munster Hurling Championship Format

munster-hurling-championship-coat-of-arms

The Munster Senior Hurling League usually starts in May and ends in June, but this year, like it was in 2020, it has been delayed thanks to the current pandemic. As a result, the championship in 2021 will start on the 27th of June and will conclude on the 18th of July.

There are five teams that compete in this championship, which is usually a round-robin tournament where each team plays every other team once, and the top two then compete in the final for the right to be crowned champions.

However, the format changed in 2020 to a straight knockout event due to the pandemic, and it is going to keep the same format for the 2021 edition. At this moment in time, we do not yet know whether it will revert back to a round-robin format for the 2022 edition - this is something we will just have to wait and see.

A draw is done to see who will play who, with three of the five teams being drawn in the semi-finals, and the remaining two playing in a quarter-final. The two teams that make it to the Munster Hurling Final will get a safe passage to the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, with the winners being placed straight in the semi-final, and the losers will enter into the quarter-final.

The three other teams are entered into an All-Ireland Hurling draw alongside three teams from the Leinster Championship, and four teams (two from either province) will be drawn into a Round 1 qualifier. The two teams that are left are lucky as they receive a bye into a Round 2 qualifier. They will then play against the two winners from the first round to see who fills the remaining spots in the All-Ireland Hurling quarter-finals, where they will play the beaten finalists from the Munster and Leinster finals.

It is not always the same five teams that compete because there is a promotion and relegation process in play, and the Joe McDonagh Cup is an important part of this process. Six hurling teams, a mix of teams from Munster and Leinster province, play for the Joe McDonagh Cup and the chance to earn qualification to their provincial championship. If a team from Munster wins, there will be a promotion and relegation play-off against the side that came bottom of the Munster Hurling Championship.

Munster Hurling Betting

Hurling is a sport that is increasing in popularity rapidly and this is why there are more and more markets available for this sport. When it comes to placing bets on the Munster Hurling Championship, there are plenty of markets for you to put your money on, and below we are going to have a look at some of the more popular bets.

Match Betting

This is the most popular hurling market, and it is also the simplest as all you need to do is try to predict whether the match will be won by the home or away team or whether it will end in a draw. Any self-respectable bookie that has hurling as one of their sports on offer will have this type of market available.

Over/Under

There are plenty of different over/under markets which you can put your cash on. These kinds of bets just require you to decide whether there will more or fewer of a market that the bookie sets. Some of the more popular over/under options include total points, fouls, points methods, and cards. For example, a sportsbook might give you 3.5 cards in a match, and then it is up to you to decide whether you think there will be over (4 cards or more) or under (no more than 3 cards) in the game.

First Points Scorer

If you have bet on a football game before then you will more than likely already know that you have the chance to bet on a player that you believe will score the match's first goal. When it comes to hurling betting, you can put a bet on a particular player being the first to score points in the game. With the majority of bookmakers, it does not matter how it is that your chosen player scores, so long as they score points before everyone else. Since there are plenty of other players that might score the first points, the odds that are on the table are usually quite enticing.

Odd/Even Final Total Points

This is another easy market to bet on as you just need to try and predict whether the total points at full-time will be an odd or even number. This bet is an even money one, so you have a 50% chance of getting your wager right. This bet is one you would place if you are looking for some fun rather than a huge profit.

Handicap Betting

Handicap betting is pretty useful as there are many one-sided matches in hurling when you step away from inter-county games. As a result, the odds on offer will usually be very high or very low. There really is no point in staking money on an outcome with high odds as your chances of being a winner are slim, and there is no point in staking money on low odds as the profit you can gain is not worth the risk.

This is where making a handicap bet is well worth your while as you can subtract or add points from one of the teams in order to decrease or increase their odds. Therefore, if one of the teams is a huge favourite to win but you want to bet on them still, you can give them a -5 points deficit to increase their odds - this means that they then have to go on to beat their opponents by 6 points.

Munster Hurling Tips

When the Munster Hurling Championship is closer to starting, we will provide you with a number of useful tips that will hopefully see you bettering your odds.

Free Bets Offers

So, we have spoken about the format, fixtures, odds, and different types of bets that you can make, and the next thing we shall concentrate on is free bets. It is always good to be able to place a bet on a sporting event without putting any of your own hard-earned cash at risk.

Nowadays, sports betting sites will offer new potential customers free bets as a means to try and get them to open an account. Free bets are awesome since you can make wagers without having your own money on the line, but not all free bets have been created equally. This means that you need to do your research before you claim a free bet so you can be certain that you are claiming the best bonus possible when signing up with a sportsbook. You do not want to end up in the scenario where you register with a bookie to bet on hurling and then realise that the Welcome Bonus is one of the worst around.

This time, you will glad to find out that you do not have to sit down and do your own research as we have done the tedious work for you. In the table below, you will be able to see what we believe are five of the best sportsbooks deals that are available at the moment. You can use the following bonuses on whatever sporting event you want, but if the Munster Hurling Championship is being played when/if you sign up with one of the bookmakers below, we suggest you bet on one of the matches using that bonus cash.

Munster Hurling Championship Free Bets
Bet365 €50 worth of bet credits Claim Now
William HillReceive free bets worth a total of €40 when making a €10 betClaim Now
888sport Receive free bets worth a total of €30 when making a €10 bet Claim Now
BetVictorClaim a free bet that is worth €30 when making a €5 wager Claim Now
UnibetIf your initial bet loses you can get up €40 back in free betsClaim Now

N.B. Sports betting sites have to adjust their bonuses frequently as they need to come up with innovative ones that will help them to stay ahead of their competitors. Thus, there is a slight opportunity that the bonuses we have just mentioned in the table above will not match the ones that you find when you go on their website. If this is the case, we apologise but we do not have enough free time to always check if a bonus has been changed. We will check every so often, and if we notice that a bonus has been changed, we shall update our pages accordingly.

Also, all bonuses, no matter what type of bonus it is or who you have an account with, will have a number of terms and conditions that apply. It is imperative that you read all the T&Cs before you go ahead and start to make use of the bonus on offer.

Previews

Below we have given you some helpful information for the Munster Hurling Championship:

Cork Will be Looking for Their 55th Title

When it comes down to lifting the Munster Hurling Championship trophy, Cork leads the way having won no fewer than 54 Munster hurling titles. They have finished second on 30 occasions, which shows just how many times they have managed to make it to Munster hurling final venue. Since the year 2000, they have won this tournament 7 times, with their last two wins coming back in 2017 and 2018. It is probably safe for us to say that there will not be an awful lot of people who will be confident of betting against them lifting the trophy this time around.

Limerick Will Be Looking to Retain Their Title

Limerick won the 2020 edition by beating Waterford in the final, which made it back-to-back wins since they also lifted the trophy in 2019. This was the 21st time that they had lifted the trophy, which puts them third on the list of Championship trophies behind Cork (54) and Tipperary (42). They have a solid team and will definitely be confident about being able to make it three title wins in a row.

Aaron Gillane Will Challenge for Top Scorer Once Again

During the 2020 tournament, Aaron Gillane, who plays for Limerick, was the top scorer with 28 points to his name. The closest to him was Stephen Bennett, who scored 23 points. Gillane will be quietly confident of being able to come out on top once more, and if you are thinking about placing a bet on the top scorer, then you would not be shooting yourself in the foot if you went for Gillane.

A Look Back at the Previous Year

Due to the global pandemic, the Munster Hurling Championship 2020 took part in October and November. It was won by Limerick, who won their second consecutive title. In the tables below, we have detailed how this event played out.
