Real Madrid vs Liverpool UEFA Champions League 2023 Real Madrid vs Liverpool UEFA Champions League 2023

The second leg of the round of 16 clash between Real Madrid and Liverpool will take place on Wednesday, March 15th at the iconic Bernabéu Stadium, with the Reds facing an almost impossible challenge if they’re to reach the quarterfinals and defy the Champions League betting odds.

After all, Los Blancos overpowered their rivals in the first leg at Anfield, ultimately winning 5-2 despite conceding a 2-0 lead during the first 14 minutes of the game. The Reds cut a dishevelled and disorganised unit by the end, while Madrid were playing within themselves by the time the final whistle echoed around a silent Anfield.

Of course, Liverpool have recovered from similar deficits throughout their history, most notably when they thrashed Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield after a 3-0 first leg defeat on their way to winning the UCL in 2018/19.

However, this side looks a shadow of its former self, while the second leg will be played on away soil in this instance. But can Real Madrid vs Liverpool yield another seismic UCL upset, or will Los Blancos cruise into the last eight? Read on the find out more and see my Real Madrid vs Liverpool betting prediction.

⚡ Real Madrid Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2 Preview

Going into the round of 16, first leg clash between Real Madrid and Liverpool, much of the focus was on the latter’s poor domestic form. However, Los Blancos have also struggled for consistency in La Liga either side of the FIFA World Cup, losing three and drawing two of 11 matches since October 30th to fall eight points behind bitter rivals Barcelona at the top of the table.

However, Madrid made light of this in an effortlessly devastating performance at Anfield, as despite going 2-0 down to goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah inside the opening 14 minutes, the team responded with its customary coolness to score five times in 46 minutes either side of half-time.

The sight of 37-year-old Luka Modric powering through the Reds’ midfield to help lay on the fifth goal for Karim Benzema will have been particularly galling for Liverpool, but it also highlighted the threat that Jurgen Klopp’s men will face on the counterattack as they look to force the pace at the Bernabéu Stadium.

What’s more, Madrid currently has no new or significant injury or suspension worries ahead of the second leg game. Sure, 27-year-old left back Ferland Mendy remains sidelined with a muscle injury and is expected to miss out, but otherwise Los Blancos should be at full strength when they take to the field in Spain. This means that defensive midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni may also be in line to start the second leg.

🏅 Liverpool Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2 Preview

Liverpool’s defeat at Anfield in the first leg saw the Reds ship five goals at home in European competition for the first time, while the loss extended a run that has seen the team win just three of 10 matches across all competitions since the beginning of 2023.

Overall, the Reds have played 35 matches this season, winning 17 and losing 11 of these while achieving a win percentage across all competitions of just 48.57%. To provide context, Liverpool lost just four out of 64 matches during their quest for an unprecedented quadruple last season, with Klopp’s team having seen their level drop considerably in 2022/23.

For many, the first leg defeat was the culmination of this poor form and the defensive vulnerability that has plagued the team throughout the campaign, while it also highlighted Liverpool’s growing lack of physicality and presence in the middle of the park. Fabinho in particular looked off the pace at Anfield, while Jordan Henderson is also struggling to play with his trademark energy and intensity for 90 minutes.

The Reds have recently welcomed back Diego Jota, Roberto Firmino and defensive lynchpin Virgil van Dijk from injury, but none of these players were able to positively impact the game either from the start or the bench. However, Liverpool may be buoyed further by the return of winger Luis Diaz for the second leg, as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.

However, they’re likely to remain without on-loan midfielder Arthur Melo and young Scottish right back Calvin Ramsey, both of whom are recovering from recent surgeries.

🆚 Real Madrid vs Liverpool Key Matchups

I’m going to offer my informed Real Madrid vs Liverpool prediction a little later in the piece, but first it’s important that we take a closer look at the various individual battles that will dictate the outcome of the second leg. Here are three duels to keep your eyes on.

1️⃣ Luka Modric vs Fabinho

Luka Modric ultimately ran the show at Anfield, showcasing all of his experience and technical ability to control the game as Madrid ran riot in the second half. As I’ve touched on, the mere sight of him powering past an ailing Fabinho and young midfielder Stefan Bajcetic will have troubled Jurgen Klopp, with neither player able to even foul the marauding 37-year-old.

The Croatian will be hoping to repeat this performance in the second leg, but Fabinho and his midfield cohorts will have to up their game considerably to have any chance of winning the second leg and overturning the existing 5-2 deficit.

The Brazilian will ultimately need support in Spain, both from his teammates and manager. Certainly, players like Bajcetic and Henderson will have to also work hard to deny Modric time and space, while Klopp may need to consider tactics that afford Liverpool a more compact defensive shape.

However, this will be difficult given the Reds’ need to win the game, and Modric will be ready and waiting to capitalize on any space that’s afforded to him in Madrid.

2️⃣ Vinicius Junior vs Trent Alexander Arnold

A key theme that has run throughout Liverpool’s poor form this season is the relative weakness of the right side of their defence, where both Trent Alexander Arnold and Joe Gomez have been ruthlessly targeted and exposed by opponents.

Both players struggled once again defensively in the first leg, as they were put to the sword by the precocious Vinicius Junior. The Brazilian was a constant threat both when running with the ball and in behind Liverpool’s defensive line, but neither Alexander Arnold or Gomez covered themselves in glory with their positioning.

Once again, the pair will have to improve markedly if they’re to start in Spain, and Trent will need to enhance his starting position and focus in the defensive third if he’s to deal with Vinicius Junior’s pace and movement. This will afford Liverpool a base to keep the ball and sustain attacks, while enabling Alexander Arnold to get forward and use his attacking strengths.

Of course, Liverpool will have to attack Madrid from the outset if they’re to succesfully overturn a first leg, three goal deficit, so Trent may need to produce the game of his life if he’s to provide the necessary balance to the Reds’ right side.

3️⃣ Rodrygo vs Andrew Robertson

Conversely, the left-hand side of Liverpool’s defence is much stronger, with left back Andrew Robertson and Virgil Van Dijk looking marginally more secure against the threat of Rodrygo in the first half at Anfield.

However, the young Brazilian came into his own in the second half, as he continued to drift from right to left and trouble Liverpool with his constant movement and outstanding link-up with Karim Benzema.

He even provided an assist for the Frenchman’s first and Madrid’s fourth goal, slipping a pass to Benzema whose 18-yard strike took a wicked deflection off the hapless Gomez.

Rodrygo will be even more of a threat in Spain, with Madrid likely to play a slightly lower defensive block and invite Liverpool onto them. He’ll subsequently look to occupy the space left by Robertson when he goes forward and test the Reds’ high defensive line, potentially wreaking havoc if Klopp’s men struggle to sustain their attacks.

📈 Real Madrid vs Liverpool Head-to-Head Statistics

The clash at Anfield was the 10th between these two European juggernauts, with Madrid recording their sixth win in total.

Interestingly, this was also Los Blanco’s sixth win in the last seven matches between Real Madrid and Liverpool, dating back to the Reds’ famous 4-0 thrashing of their illustrious opponents at Anfield in March 2009. This run has also seen Madrid score 16 goals, while Liverpool have hit the back of the net just four times during the same sequence (two of which came during the opening leg).

Of course, the Reds won their first three matches against Real Madrid, including a 1-0 win over the 14-times European cup winners in the 1981 European Cup final in Paris.

However, Liverpool will not only have to win their first game against Madrid for 14 years to reach the 2022/23 UCL quarterfinals, but they’ll also have to record their biggest ever triumph against Los Blancos while making Champions League history in the process.

🏆 Real Madrid vs Liverpool Prediction – Who will Win?

Now it’s time for my Real Madrid vs Liverpool prediction 2023, based on the factors I’ve discussed above and the relative form of both sides.

Madrid obviously have logic and the weight of history in their favour, as no team has ever progressed from a UCL knockout tie having lost their home leg by three goals. Until recently, no team had qualified from such a tie having lost their home leg by two goals, before Manchester United famously eliminated PSG during the round of 16 in 2018/19.

At the same time, Madrid is clearly a more confident and settled side at present, while the presence of Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and the indefatigable Modric affords them a huge advantage in the middle of the park.

Ultimately, I believe that Madrid will record another win at the Bernabéu Stadium, extending their aggregate lead and confirming their place in the last eight. I think that Liverpool will also be competitive for periods, however, and are more than capable of breaching Los Blanco’s defensive line.

🔍 Real Madrid vs Liverpool Betting Tips

With my Real Madrid vs Liverpool football prediction in mind, it’s time to take a closer look at the latest odds and identify the best value wagers. Here’s a few expert betting tips to consider in relation to the Madrid vs Liverpool second leg clash!

1️⃣ Real Madrid to Win at 2.00 With Multiple Sportsbooks

Madrid are the clear favourites to win at the Bernabéu Stadium, just as Liverpool were tipped to prevail at Anfield.

However, an average price of 2.00 is relatively competitive given Madrid’s supremacy in the first leg, so this is a wager that may offer value by returning double your stake if the bet comes in.

You can get on this with a number of Betinireland’s recommended sportsbooks, including TonyBet Sports, Luckster, Unibet, Ladbrokes Sports and William Hill.

I’d also recommend that you place this wager sooner rather than later, as the odds are prone to drift and shorten as kick-off draws closer!

2️⃣ Both Sides to Score at 1.57 with William Hill

This is something of a no-brainer, especially when you consider the ease with which Madrid cut through the Liverpool defence for much of the first leg at Anfield.

Despite being well below par and struggling for any kind of consistent attacking fluency or defensive stability, Liverpool also managed to score twice at home and should have had a third before Vinicius Junior curled home Madrid’s opener.

This supports the idea that Liverpool’s strength lies in their attacking firepower and depth, while the fact that the Reds have to score at least three times in Madrid should create more chances for both sides in front of goal.

So, although backing both sides to score doesn’t offer huge value at first glance, you can wager on this particular outcome at odds of 1.57 with TonyBet Sports and potentially leverage a free bet offer to optimise your returns (I’ll touch more on the relevant promotions below).

3️⃣ Real Madrid to win and Both Sides to Score at 3.40

Given Madrid’s obvious status as favourites and the likelihood that both teams will score in the second leg, it’s little wonder that such markets don’t offer the most competitive or alluring odds at first glance.

However, you could look to combine both betting markets in a single wager to extend the available prices and your potential returns, by backing Madrid to win and both competing teams to get on the scoresheet in Spain.

This outcome is currently priced at 3.40 by BoyleSports and William Hill, and it represents an excellent way of creating value in match betting without overly compromising your chances of winning.

Once again, however, try to back this market as quickly and proactively as possible, just in case these odds shorten as the second leg draws closer.

2️⃣ Ladbrokes - Wager €5 and receive €20 in Free Bets

As a new Ladbrokes customer in Ireland, you can qualify for €20 in free bets when you place an initial, qualifying wager of €5. ❓ Frequently Asked Questions About Real Madrid vs Liverpool Prediction

We’ve nearly completed our Real Madrid vs Liverpool prediction and betting guide for the second leg of this mouthwatering round of 16 clash, which pits two of Europe’s true heavyweights together.

However, I also wanted to answer a handful of pertinent FAQs relating to the match between Real Madrid and Liverpool. These include:

1️⃣ Real Madrid vs Liverpool Champions League Leg 2 – Who Will Win?

Despite falling 2-0 down to Liverpool against the backdrop of a white-hot atmosphere at Anfield, Los Blancos remained composed and controlled and never once looked like succumbing to the occasion. This elite mentality will see them approach the second leg in a similarly measured way, and with the backing of home support I’m expecting them to win once again in the second leg.

2️⃣ What’s the best price for Real Madrid to Beat Liverpool?

Currently, Madrid are priced at an average of 2.00 to win the second leg, with TonyBet Sports, Luckster, Unibet, Ladbrokes Sports and William Hill all offering the same odds on this outcome. While such odds aren’t universally appealing, they’re more than competitive given Madrid’s supremacy in the first leg and Liverpool’s ongoing defensive struggles.

3️⃣ Where Can I Watch Real Madrid vs Liverpool?

If you’re an Irish or UK punter, you’ll be able to livestream the clash between Real Madrid and Liverpool on BT Sport 1. The match will take place on March 15th and gets underway at 20:00 GMT, while those of you who prefer to bet in-play could also see if your preferred sportsbook is also livestreaming the event.

4️⃣ What are the Odds for Real Madrid vs Liverpool to Qualify?

Unsurprisingly, Real Madrid are overwhelming favourites to qualify from this round of 16 tie and reach the quarterfinals, and can be backed at an average price of just 1.01. Conversely, Liverpool are priced at around 23.00 to overturn their first leg deficit and win the tie, with these odds barely reflecting the challenge facing them at the Bernabéu Stadium.

5️⃣ What are the chances of either Real Madrid or Liverpool to win the Champions League?
