PDC World Cup of Darts Betting Guide

Dart hitting the bulls eye with the words Professional Darts Corporation and the World Cup of Darts logo

If you are wanting to brush up on your knowledge of this annual darts tournament, then you are in the right place. The World Cup of Darts, organised by the Professional Darts Corporation is different to other tournaments as players participating do not represent themselves, rather, representing their country instead in pairs. The top two players based on their PDC ranking enter from 32 countries, competing in a knockout format – but more on that later.

World Cup of Darts Markets

Ahead of the tournament, sports betting sites will begin to publish the different betting markets that are available for the World Cup. Bettors will be able to place wagers on many different markets ranging from the most common such as predicting the outright winner to smaller side markets such as betting whether a player will have a nine dart finish.

Don’t worry if you are completely new to the darts betting markets – below you can find some information on markets that you can expect to find on betting sites.

World Cup of Darts Winner Tournament Winner

This is by far the most common and popular bet to make on any event really. If you are a complete beginner to placing sport wagers or the world of darts betting, this is the perfect place to start. All you need to do for this market is predict which country you think will be victorious in the tournament. It’s not possible for there to be a tie due to the format of this tournament, so you will only need to pick one country.

Most 180’s

Triple 20 is the highest score a player can achieve in a single throw. With three darts being thrown per turn, this reaches the maximum score of 180. If you manage to watch live darts, you definitely won’t miss when a player lands 180 points as the crowd will make lots of noise.

For the World Cup of Darts odds, it will be possible to place wagers on players to score 180 either in a match or particular leg or set.

Nine Dart Finish

Darts players need to check out from 501 and the fastest possible way is with just nine darts. Every player wants the infamous nine-darter but of course it’s not easy to achieve. This means sports betting sites will usually have high odds for this market, so if you manage to predict correctly, you could walk away with a lovely profit.

Other Markets for the World Cup of Darts

As this tournament is one of the larger darts events, there are many obscure or niche bets to make that could be on offer. For example, within the outright winner market, there could be the option to stake the top player for each country. Of course, this bet would be for the punters that have a good knowledge of the players and have conducted a fair bit of research but the payoff could be huge.

World Cup of Darts Tips

If you are coming to the World Cup of Darts 2022 as a complete beginner, we’ll lay out our top tips to improve your betting strategy and hopefully your success with your wagers.

  1. Research: Take the time to get knowledgeable about the players, their history, the format of the tournament and so on. Building up your knowledge on this tournament is key to making good bets. Finding reliable tipsters online can also be helpful if you need some extra advice about any of the matches too.
  2. Start Small: The most sensible way to test the waters of darts betting is to start small. This will give you a small taste of what happens when you make a bet, and the risk is reduced to a minimum should you lose the bet. Use these experiences to gain confidence until you feel comfortable increasing your bet slightly.
  3. Be Responsible: It’s imperative to only bet within your means and only use money that you are okay with losing.

Teams to Take Note of

In the eleven editions of this tournament, England shares the top of the leaderboard with the Netherlands with four wins apiece. England however just edge ahead regarding placing second twice compared to just once with the Netherlands. Scotland managed to clinch the win twice and Wales claimed victory once. Australia, Belgium, Ireland, and Austria are yet to gain success at the top spot. However, with the powerhouse of Phil Taylor no longer playing darts professionally, we are sure to see some other countries taking the reins for the next few years.

Keeping this in mind, if Peter Wright is on the cards to play for Scotland in the next tournament, there is a very strong chance of success for them again. Watch out for some of the rising players such as Dimitri Van den Bergh and consistent champions such as Gerwyn Price and Michael van Gerwen to push Wales and the Netherlands into the top spots.

The Official Format

a cog wheel and a trophy

The World Cup of Darts format is a knockout style comprising of 32 teams. Eight of the top teams comprise a seeded tournament section while the other 24 teams are unseeded, stemming from a format change in 2016. Interestingly, there have been many iterations over the years since the inaugural tournament in 2010, however, since 2014, the format has largely stayed the same.

The teams for each nation competing consist of the top two ranked players in the country and to create the seeding score for the top eight teams, the average rank is taken from both players. In the earlier iterations of the tournament, one or two points were awarded for a singles or doubles win, respectively, with points contributing to an overall league table. Since 2014, where ‘best of’ either seven or nine matches would naturally create a winner, meaning the first team to win four or five matches would move on to the next stage.

First Round

The first round of matches in the World Cup of Darts tournament are ‘best of nine legs - doubles’. After the first round, 16 teams will be knocked out.

Second Round, Quarter Finals, and Semi-Finals

All these matches are comprised of two ‘best of seven legs - singles’. Each nation gets the option to choose in which order they will play. If there is a tie between two nations, another best of seven leg match is played, but with doubles to settle an outright winner.

Final

The World Cup of Darts final can be won through three match wins. The final commences with two ‘best of seven legs singles’ matches with a ‘best of seven - doubles’ matches to follow. If at this stage there is a tie, deciding matches in the form of ‘best of seven legs - reverse singles’ matches are played to ensure there is a single winner of the tournament.

The 2022 World Cup of Darts Schedule

The World Cup of darts schedule is fairly simple as the tournament is only held over four days. The first and second days sees eight knockout matches a piece, whittling down the remaining teams to just 16. The next day will see an afternoon and evening session with four knockout matches being played in each session. On the last day, the afternoon session will see the quarter finals being played, leaving the evening session for the semi-finals and final match.

Take a look at the table below to find more details about what rounds occur on each day.

Quarter One / Day One8x First Round
Quarter One / Day Two8x Second Round
Quarter Two / Day Three 4x Second Round
