📆 When Will The Galway Plate 2022 Take Place?

The Galway Plate is a Grade 1 race that, as you can probably guess from the name, is a race that is run in Galway, Ireland. This 2 mile and 6 1/2 furlongs race is open to horses that are four years or above, and there are 14 fences that the participants have to successful jump over. To ensure that this race is run on level footing, there is a handicap system in place. The 2022 Galway Plate will take place on Wednesday the 27th of July, so read on to find out some more top betting advice.

🔍 The Galway Plate Betting Tips for 2022

galway-plate-2022-horse-racing-banner-small-version

The Galway Plate was first established back in 1869, and the very first edition of this race was won by a horse called Absentee - yes, he was anything but absent from that race. The most successful horse in the history of this race is Tipperary Boy - he won the title in 1899, 1901, and 1902. The race used to be 2 miles and 5 furlongs, but in 1992 it was extended to 2 miles and 6 furlongs, and it has another half a furlong added to it in 2015.

This race was sponsored by William Hill between 2006 and 2010, and from 2011 up until the current date, it has been sponsored by Tote Ireland. The prize pot for the 2022 edition of the Galway Plate stands at €270,000, which is €20,000 more than it was in 2021. The winner of this race will earn a cheque somewhere in the region of €160,000. It is one of the biggest races at the Galway Festival, so you definitely do not want to miss it.

One of the main things that make horse racing such a popular sport around the world for punters to watch and place bets on is the fact that not all racecourses have been created equally. If they were, then we do not think that it would be an exaggeration to say that things could end up getting pretty boring. Different racecourses have different characteristics, and this means that jockeys and horses need to have numerous skills if they are to succeed at various events.

The Ballybrit racetrack, where the Galway Festival is going to take place, is a right-handed course that is around one mile and three furlongs. It has a steep decline into a dip where the final two fences are found - these two fences are actually known as being the closest two fences of any racetrack in the world, and then there is a sharp incline towards the finish line. So, as you have probably figured out from this description, this is a track where experience is key - if a jockey makes the smallest of errors at the final two fences, him and his horse are going to fall.

When it comes to the different races that are run over this 7-day festival, it is safe to say that the Galway Plate is one of the biggest, alongside the Galway Hurdle. Like the Galway Plate, the Galway Hurdle also has a prize fund of €270,000. These are the two races that attract the most attention at this festival.

Many novice horse racing bettors will believe that the stall that a horse starts a race in is not important. However, while this is true for some races, there are other races and festivals where the stall number is important, and the Galway Festival is one of those. Now, while we could not find the individual stall stats for the Galway Plate, we did find a stat that you should keep in mind when you are betting at the Galway Festival. Over the last five years, the worst stall to bet on has been number 8 - backing all the runners from this stall over this time period would have seen a loss of -58.00.

Below we have provided you with some Galway plate tips and statistics that we believe can be useful to you when you are deciding on a horse to bet on to win this race:

  • The fastest winning time for the Galway Plate is 5:18.80 and this was set in 2004 by Ansar, who was ridden by D. J. Casey and trained by D. K. Weld. On the other hand, the slowest winning time for the same race is 5:42.90 and this was set in 2009 by Ballyholland, who was ridden by Andrew J. McNamara and trained by C. A. McBratney
  • The leading jockeys from the last 20 editions of this race are Mark Walsh and Paul Townend as they have both won it twice in this time. The former won it with Bob Lingo in 2012 and Early Doors in 2020, while the latter won it with Blazing Tempo in 2011 and Royal Rendezvous in 2021. Therefore, if you see that either of these jockeys are racing in the 2022 edition, it would be wise to think about backing their horse
  • The leading trainer from the last 20 versions of the Galway Plate is Gordon Elliott, who has been a winner on three occasions. The three winners that he trained were Lord Scoundrel in 2016, Clarcam in 2018, and Borice in 2019. Other trainers that have managed two wins include W. P. Mullins, D. K. Weld, and Henry de Bromhead. On the other hand, Mrs. John Harrington and E. J. O'Grady have sent out 12 runners each and not returned a single winner. This is all something that you should think about when betting on this race
  • From the previous 20 winners of this race, 19 of them were aged between six and nine years old
  • Out of the previous 20 champions, 18 of them had no more than one career fall
  • From the last 20 winners, 18 of them did not carry more than 10-13
  • Out of the last 20 victors, 20 of them had two to seven wins under their belt
  • 20 of the last 20 winners previously raced in a Group 2 event
  • 20 of the last 20 champions have all been France, British, or Irish bred
  • 19 of the last 20 winners have been male horses, while one winner has been a female horse

A serious bookmaker will know that horse racing is one of the most popular sports for people to gamble on, so there will always be plenty of money up for grabs. 🏆 The Galway Plate Preview

In this section, we will check out some of the favourites for the 2022 Galway Plate. We will look at how these horses have been running lately, how much success they have had in their career overall, and who they have been trained by and who their jockey will be. This is all information that can be very handy when you are thinking about who to bet on.

Cape Gentleman

When you checked out the odds in the table above, you would have noticed that Cape Gentleman is the joint favourite to go on and win this prestigious race. In his career to date, he has run a total of 15 races, which includes six flat races, five hurdle races, and four chase races. In his flat races, he has won two and placed in two, in his hurdle races he has won two and placed in one, and in his chase races, he has won two and placed in one. His last race was on the 28th of November 2021, so he could be a bit rusty heading into this race.

Emmet Mullins, the former jockey, is the trainer of Cape Gentleman, and he is relatively inexperienced in the world of horse training. However, despite his lack of experience, he does not have too bad a record to date. Since the 2017/18 horse racing season, he has had 362 runners, which has led to 66 wins and a win percentage of 18%. During this time, he has also had 143 horses place, giving him a place percentage of 40%. In the 2022 season, he has three wins to his name from 22 runners and seven places. When it comes to the Galway Festival, he has had 29 runners and nine of these have gone on to win, giving him a pretty impressive win percentage of 31%. From these runners, he has also managed 16 places, which gives him a place percentage of 55%.

Donnagh Myler will be the man trying to steer Cape Gentleman home to victory, and from the 1457 races that he has raced in, he has managed 100 wins, giving him a low winning percentage of 7%. From these races, he has managed to place 324 times, giving him a place percentage of 22%. It is fair to say that 2022 has been the best season of his career as he has earned himself 12 win from 76 races, giving him a win percentage of 16% - this is the first time that he has managed to land a double figure win percentage in a season, so he is, it is fair to say, in a little bit of form.

The Shunter

The other joint favourite for the 2022 Galway Plate is The Shunter, and he is a more experienced horse than Cape Gentleman. In his racing career to date, he has taken part in 33 races, which includes one flat race, 15 hurdle races, nine chase races, and 8 bumper races. He won his one and only flat race, has three hurdle wins and two places, and two chase wins and three places. He last raced on the 17th of May, which means he might not be as rusty as Cape Gentleman, who has not raced this year.

Emmet Mullins, like he is for Cape Gentleman, is also the trainer who is tasked with making sure that The Shunter has a great chance of claiming the 2022 Galway Plate title. With both of the favourites under his wing, it is safe to say that Mullins has a really good chance of adding to his impressive stats at the Galway Festival. If you are considering betting on one of his horses, but do not know who to choose, then we would recommend that you make a place bet on one of them, since there is a very good chance of both placing.

M. P. Walsh is the jockey that will be sitting on The Shunter and trying to guide him to victory in this big race. From the 2017/18 season, he has raced 1914 times and has picked up 303 wins, giving him a winning percentage of 16%. In this time, he has also placed 808 times, giving him a place percentage of 42% - thus, this is another reason why you should think about making a place bet. Over the course of his career, he has taken part in 102 races at the Galway Festival, and has an 11% win rate and a 40% place rate, which is not too bad.

El Barra

One of the third favourites for this race is El Barra, who has a total of 11 races under his belt - this includes five chase races, five hurdle races, and one flat race. From these races, he has managed a total of five wins, and four places, so it is fair to say that he has had plenty of success in his horse racing career to date. He last raced on the 29th of April, and he has run three times in 2022, so rustiness is not something that should be much of an issue.

The trainer for El Barra is W. P. Mullins, who is considered by many to be one of the best trainers around. In 2005, he won the Grand National with Hedgehunter, and he also trained Hurricane Fly, who won the Champion Hurdle in 2011 and 2013. At the 2015 Cheltenham Festival, he trained eight winners, which is a joint record for this festival. Since 2017, he has had 4226 runners and he has picked up 1051 wins, giving him a win percentage of 25%. During this time, he has seen 2171 of his horses place, which gives him a place percentage of 51%. When it comes to experience, he is certainly not lacking it at the Galway Festival - he has had 249 runners with a 20% win percentage and a 48% place percentage.

P. Townend will be the jockey trying to guide El Barra to victory, and since the 2017/18 season, he has raced in 1919 races and has 518 wins to his name, giving him an impressive strike rate of 27%. During this same time frame, he has picked up 1063 places, meaning that he has placed in 55% of his races. He has had a really good 2022 season so far, with 25 wins from 68 races, giving him a win percentage of 37% - he also has a place percentage of 60%. So, if you want to place a wager on El Barra to win, then maybe a place bet is your best option.

Fire Attack

Fire Attack is the joint-third favourite to win the race, and this seven-year-old gelding has 12 races under his belt, which includes three wins and four placings. He last raced on the 29th of May, so at least he has some running experience this year and will not be rusty.

The trainer of Fire Attack is J. P. O'Brien, who is the son of the very successful trainer Aiden O'Brien. He has had plenty of his own success though, and got his training career off to a flier when he was victorious in the Moyglare Stud Stakes in 2016. The following year, he won the Melbourne Cup with Rekindling, while he also won the Irish Derby in 2018 and the Pretty Polly Stakes in 2019. In the last five years, he has had 4272 runners and has landed 586 wins, giving him a win percentage of 14%. In this time, he has placed 1597 times, which gives him a place percentage of 37%. He has had 151 runners at the Galway Festival and has had 18 winners, giving him a win percentage of 12%.

S. Fitzgerald is the jockey that will be trying to take Fire Attack to glory, and he has 548 races under his belt in the last two seasons, with 54 wins to his name, giving him a winning percentage of 10%. During this time, he has also placed 166 times, giving him a 30% place percentage, which is not too bad at all. This season he has 13 wins from 111 races, giving him a 12% win rate. He has raced 21 times at Galway and has a 10% win percentage and a 19% place percentage.

N.B. When you are placing bets on horse races, or any other sport, it is really important that you remember to gamble responsibly. To make sure that this is the case, we recommend that you set up some sort of budget with a value that you are 100% sure that you can afford to lose. If you do lose all of the budget that you set aside, then stop placing bets straight away and do not try to convince yourself that it is fine to spend a bit more in order to try and recuperate losses. Furthermore, it is vital that you take the time to read the T&Cs that apply to a bonus since failing to do so could see you make a mistake that sees you forfeit your bonus.

Also, sportsbooks are changing their bonus offers quite regularly in order to ensure that things remain fresh and to stay one step ahead of their main competitors. Thus, there is a chance that some of the free bet offers that we have mentioned in the table above are different if/when you opt to visit their respective sites to open an account. If this happens to you, then we really do apologise for any inconvenience, but the replacement offer will be as good or better.
