🔍 Galway Handicap Hurdle Betting Tips for 2022

The Galway Hurdle is a handicap race with over a century of history. The first race was held 1913 in which Red Damsel won. The race was not always two miles long - in fact, when the race began it was shorter at one an a half miles.
In the last 40 years, the most successful trainer has been Willie Mullins with five wins. His four most recent wins are from 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2021. The leading jockey is Mullins’ son, Patrick Mullins, who enjoyed wins in 2018, 2020, and 2021.
The horses will race around a right-handed track with nine hurdles to jump. The finishing straight is short with a distance slightly longer than a furlong. However, the horses will have to contend with a steep incline till the finish.
Not only will they have a challenging finish to the race, as this is a handicap race meaning horses are disadvantages or advantaged in line with their past performances and history. Further down in our prediction you can find the weights of our three favourite runners.
We have curated some of the top Galway Handicap Hurdle tips below to consider while placing your bets:
- This race is open to horses aged four years old and above.
- In the last 10 years, the oldest winning horse was aged nine while the youngest was five. The average age of the winning horses in this time frame is just under seven.
- Since 2012, the winning horse with the highest weight assigned is a tie between Aramon (2020) and Saldier (2021) at 11st 10lbs. On the opposite end, Quick Jack (2015) won with 10st 4lbs assigned to him.

- There are currently 33 entries. In the past five years, the number of runners has been closer to 20.

🏆 Galway Handicap Hurdle Preview

Still not sure which horse to back?
We have selected three of the top running horses to feature that have caught our eye. Get up to speed with each horse's recent race results and how they shape up for racing in the Galway Handicap Hurdle. So, without further ado, here are the three horses that we are interested in backing.
First on our list is Adamantly Chosen (10st 13lbs). This five year old horse, currently trained by Willie Mullins, has had six starts in his career, winning two to date. The length of the Galway Handicap Hurdle could suit Adamantly Chosen very well - all previous races around this length have resulted in top two podium finishes.
Adamantly Chosen’s last three race results are as follows:
- Fourth place out of 24 runners at the Punchestown Handicap (2022).
- Eleventh place out of 23 runners at the Cheltenham Handicap Hurdle (2022).
- First place, by 27 lengths, out of 18 runners at the Thurles Maiden Hurdle (2022).
HMS Seahorse (10st 4lbs) is five years old and currently trained by Paul Nolan. Out of 11 starts, HMS Seahorse has won two races. Seven races have been podium-finishes. The Galway Handicap Hurdle will be HMS Seahorse’s sixth race of the year, off the back of a somewhat recent 57 day break.
HMS Seahorse’s last three race results are as follows:
- First place, by 6.5 lengths, out of 14 runners at the Curragh Handicap (2022).
- Third place out of six runners at the Punchestown Four Year Old Hurdle (2022).
- Fourth place out of 21 runners at the Cheltenham Handicap Hurdle (2022).
Santa Rossa (11st 6lbs) is an eight year old mare, currently trained by Dermot McLoughlin. Out of 10 starts, she has won five. Eight of the races have been a podium-finish. She has a good record with longer distances, so the Galway Handicap Hurdle should suit her well. This will be Santa Rossa’s fifth race of the season.
Santa Rossa’s last three race results are as follows:
- First place, by 3 lengths, out of 11 runners at the Tipperary Hurdle (2022).
- Fifth place out of 11 runners at the Killarney Mares Hurdle (2022).
- Second place out of 8 runners at the Fairyhouse Hurdle (2022).
