On Tuesday, April 18th, Chelsea will entertain Real Madrid in the second leg of the two sides’ UEFA Champions League quarterfinal tie at Stamford Bridge. Here, the Blues will look to overcome a two-nil deficit from the first leg, under the stewardship of interim manager Frank Lampard.
Los Blancos were entirely comfortable throughout the first leg in Spain, with goals from Vinicius Junior and substitute Marco Asensio ultimately proving decisive.
Of course, Chelsea weren’t helped by the dismissal of Ben Chilwell for a professional foul just short of the hour, but in truth the side lacked ambition throughout, and Madrid were able to dominate proceedings while barely breaking out of fifth gear.
Lampard spoke positively after the game, of course, raising hopes ahead of the second leg and claiming that “special things can happen at Stamford Bridge”. But can Lampard and his charges deliver on this optimism, or will defending champions Madrid canter to yet another UCL semi-final? Find out all this and more in my Chelsea vs Real Madrid prediction below!

🏅 Chelsea Champions League Quarterfinal Leg 2 Preview
Not only is Chelsea FC used to transition, but it has historically enjoyed some of its best successes during periods of upheaval and tumult both on and off the field. Both of the team’s Champions League wins came under managers who had been appointed mid-season, for example, with Roberto Di Matteo lifting the trophy in 2012 and Thomas Tuchel repeating the feat nine years later.
However, the scale of transition since the departure of long-time owner Roman Abramovich has been unparalleled in English football, with Chelsea having already gone through three managers, two directors of football and nearly £600 million of investment under the stewardship of new owner Todd Boehly.
The recent sacking of Graham Potter (who himself replaced the fired Thomas Tuchel back in September) has caused even more upheaval, while the appointment of Frank Lampard as interim manager sent shockwaves through the footballing world. Lampard certainly has a job on his hand if he’s to steady the ship, with Chelsea having lost more games than they’ve won this season (16 as opposed to 15) and failed to score in four consecutive matches for the first time since December 1993.
The good news is that Chelsea’s previously crippling injury list has finally eased, with young striker Armando Broja the only long-term absentee as he recovers from a cruciate ligament rupture. However, Patrick Aubameyang, Benoit Badiashile, Noni Madueke and David Fofana remain unavailable for Champions League selection, as the size of Chelsea’s bloated squad makes them ineligible to play this season.

Tweets by Bayern⚡Real Madrid Champions League Quarterfinal Leg 2 Preview
Since moving clear at the top of La Liga following a 3-1 home win against Sevilla on October 22nd, Real have endured a frustrating time domestically. In fact, they’ve only won eight of their subsequent 17 league matches, while drawing four and losing on five occasions to Rayo Vallecano, Villareal (twice), Mallorca and bitter rivals Barcelona.
So, although they also thumped Barca 4-0 in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final to gain a measure of revenge and set up a final showdown against Osasuna, they’ve fallen 12 points behind Barcelona in La Liga and look set to lose their title to Xavi’s rejuvenated side.
However, Madrid have looked far more secure and comfortable in defence of their UCL crown, qualifying comfortably ahead of RB Leipzig and topping Group F during the formative part of the season. A devastating display at Anfield in the first leg of round 16 saw them thrash their EPL rivals 5-2, before a routine 1-0 win in the return match booked a quarterfinal tie against Chelsea.
Of course, Los Blancos’ comfortable win in the first leg against the Blues has left Real on the brink of the last four, while they’re largely at full strength ahead of the return match. In fact, their only current absentee is left back Ferland Mendy, who has a muscle injury and is likely to miss out in West London.

Tweets by Man City🆚 Chelsea vs Real Madrid Key Matchups
Chelsea vs Real Madrid in the 2023 Champions League could still produce a memorable conclusion in the second leg at Stamford Bridge, but the home side will need to win their individual duels if they’re to impose themselves on Los Blancos. Here are some key matchups that could decide the outcome of the game!
1️⃣ Thiago Silva vs Karim Benzema
Real Madrid have made a habit of slaying English sides of late, with their last four wins in UCL knockout ties coming against EPL opposition. Incredibly, the talismanic Karim Benzema has scored his last 11 Champions League goals against English clubs, including the opening goal in the first leg against Chelsea.
He’ll remain Madrid’s biggest threat in the second leg too, and it will most likely fall on the shoulders of the fit-again and indefatigable Thiago Silva to counter Benzema’s threat at Stamford Bridge.
The 38-year-old defender played at the heart of Chelsea’s back three in Spain, while he looked to mark Benzema directly at times and engage him proactively in physical battle.
Even though Chelsea will have to adopt a more attack-oriented approach in the second leg, I expect Silva to play a similar role at the Bridge, and his ability to effectively counter Benzema will have a critical bearing on the outcome of the game (and the tie as a whole).
2️⃣ Reece James vs Eduardo Camavinga
If Chelsea are to beat Madrid in London and have a chance of overcoming their first leg deficit, right wing back Reece James will be a key attacking outlet for the Blues.
This is particularly true when you consider that he’ll come up against the 20-year-old Frenchman Eduardo Camavinga at left back, with the energetic and versatile youngster doing a sterling role filling in for the absent Ferland Mendy at present despite being a midfielder by trade.
Not only is James one of Chelsea’s best and most efficient pressers of the ball, but his athleticism and the quality of his delivery (both from open play and set pieces) remains a key source of creativity for the Blues. He’ll also want to push Camavinga back towards his own goal and exploit any defensive weaknesses, and this will be a fascinating duel as the game unfolds.
As for Camavinga, he’ll want to attack the space in behind James and test the Englishman’s own defensive skills, earmarking the Frenchman as a prominent threat during transition.
3️⃣ N’Golo Kante vs Luka Modric
While Chelsea were largely passive and toothless in the first leg, the fit-again Frenchman N’Golo Kante provided an obvious beacon of light among the gathering gloom. He certainly looked sharp and mobile as he harried Madrid’s superior midfield, and he’ll need to be at his energetic best if Chelsea are to win the second leg.
In particular, he’ll need to get close to Madrid’s timeless Luka Modric, who remains Los Blancos’ most creative outlet and a man who will look to control the tempo of the second leg whether the away side want to dominate possession or simply manage the game during difficult periods.
If Kante can indeed roll back the years and nullify Modric’s threat (while also winning the second balls in midfield), Chelsea will have a much better of sustaining attacks and keeping the pressure on Madrid as they look to haul themselves back into the tie.
This will also stop Madrid’s counterattacks at source, optimising the Blues’ chances of keeping a clean sheet at the back.
📈 Chelsea vs Real Madrid Head-to-Head Statistics
The rivalry between Chelsea and Real Madrid is a relatively new one in European football, particularly in the UEFA Champions League. In fact, although the first leg quarterfinal clash was the fifth UCL match contested between these two teams, each of which has been played since April 2021.
The Blues have now won two and lost two of these encounters, with the other match ending in a 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabéu on April 27th, 2021. A subsequent 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge one week later saw Chelsea reach the UCL final on their way to winning the tournament that year, while the following campaign saw the sides exchange away wins as Los Blancos gained revenge and reached the last four in 2021/22.
Prior to these clashes, Chelsea and Madrid had played each other three times in official UEFA competition. The Blues won the European Super Cup thanks to a late goal by Gus Poyet in 1998, while Chelsea also edged a European Cup Winners Cup replay in May 1971 after the initial game ended in a 1-1 draw in Athens.
Overall, these two sides have met eight times in UEFA competitions, with Chelsea winning on four occasions compared to Real Madrid’s two. So, they at least have an historical edge over their rivals, and will look to build on this in the quarterfinal second leg.
🏆 Chelsea vs Real Madrid Prediction – Who will Win?
I successfully predicted that Madrid would win the first leg against Chelsea, although the home side’s eventual margin of victory was slightly better than I envisioned.
I also expect Los Blancos to win the second leg at Stamford Bridge, despite Chelsea’s pressing need to win and the degree of comfort that Madrid has in the tie.
This is partially due to Madrid’s superior individual quality and the fact that their side is more settled, with Chelsea having a huge (and disparate) selection of players to choose from and a distinct lack of cohesion and tactical consistency. Chelsea’s need to attack the game from the outset will also suit an experienced and durable Madrid side, who will use the pace and power of Vinicius Junior and Benzema to play on the break.
So, although I expect the Blues to score and be competitive throughout, my Chelsea vs Real Madrid quarters prediction is that latter will win the game and progress to the last four with a little something to spare!
⚽ My Prediction: Chelsea 1 Real Madrid 2 🏆
🔍 Chelsea vs Real Madrid Betting Tips
No Chelsea vs Real Madrid preview of this type would be complete without some advice on how to navigate the game’s numerous wagering markets. So, here are some Chelsea vs Real Madrid betting tips to keep in mind ahead of the second leg.
1️⃣ Real Madrid to Win and Both Sides Score at 5.00 with William Hill
There’s not a great deal of value to be found in backing both teams to score at Stamford Bridge, with this outcome widely expected by most football betting sites.
However, you could consider combining this betting market with a moneyline wager, as this unlocks far greater value and allows you to leverage your expert knowledge of the competing sides.
For example, if you agree with me that Madrid will win the second leg but that both teams will score at Stamford Bridge, you can combine these two outcomes within a single wager at a price of 5.00 with William Hill.
This allows for a more than competitive return, while you can also account for the increased risk by wagering with a slightly lower stake.
2️⃣ Over 2.5 goals at 2.00 with TonyBet Sports
If you believe that both sides will score in the second leg and that there will be a definitive winner, then betting on there being over 2.5 goals scored is something of a no-brainer.
This also unlocks some competitive prices in the ante post market too, as you can engage in total betting and wager on there being more than 2.5 goals scored in the game at a price of 2.00 with TonyBet Sports.
The stats also suggest that this is a sensible wager, especially as the tournament’s 116 games in 2022/23 have produced a whopping 350 goals at a rate of 3.02 per game.
Remember, Chelsea also have to chase the game from the start if they’re to have a chance of overturning their first leg deficit, and this should translate into a frenetic and open game with plenty of goalscoring chances for both sides!
3️⃣ Real Madrid to Win at 2.70 With Luckster and Unibet
Moneyline betting is surprisingly competitive ahead of the Chelsea vs Real Madrid second leg, with the bookies seemingly hedging their bets on who will win at Stamford Bridge.
This means that you can currently get some relatively long ante post odds on Madrid winning in West London, with Luckster and Unibet both pricing this outcome at around 2.70.
The average price across Betinireland’s recommended sportsbooks is 2.60, so there’s genuine value to be accessed here if you think that Real Madrid will win the match outright.
Just remember to place this bet as soon as possible, as ante post moneyline prices are known to shorten ahead of kick off in some instances and as bookies receive an influx of wagers.

🥇 Chelsea vs Real Madrid Path to the Final
Both Chelsea and Real Madrid had a right to feel hard done by after the UCL quarterfinal draw on March 17th, as they were placed in the section of the draw that also featured Manchester City and Bayern Munich.
So, the team that emerges from the Chelsea vs Real Madrid quarterfinal tie will face the winner of Manchester City vs Bayern, with the EPL side holding a 3-0 advantage after the first leg.
The subsequent semi-final tie will take place between May 9th and May 17th, with the winner progressing to the showpiece final clash at Istanbul’s Ataturk Stadium on June 10th.
Here, they’ll do battle with one of Inter, Benfica, AC Milan or Napoli, and there’s no doubt that the team that advances from Chelsea and Real’s side of the draw will be the favourite to win the 2022/23 Champions League.
❓Frequently Asked Questions About Chelsea vs Real Madrid Prediction
1️⃣ Chelsea vs Real Madrid Champions League Leg 2 – Who Will Win?
As I’ve already touched on, there’s currently no obvious betting favourite who the bookies think will win the second leg between Chelsea and Real Madrid. However, I’m tipping Los Blancos to edge the second leg by the odd goal and win the tie overall, once again confirming their place in the UCL semi-finals in the process.
2️⃣ What’s the best price for Real Madrid to beat Chelsea?
The current moneyline betting is surprisingly open, with sportsbooks offering similar odds on both Chelsea and Real Madrid to win the second leg. If you agree with my prediction and want to back Real to prevail, however, you can bet on this outcome at a market leading price of 2.70 with either Luckster or Unibet.
3️⃣ What Are the Odds for Chelsea and Real Madrid to Qualify for the Semi-Finals?
Clearly, Los Blancos have one foot in the last four after the side’s composed 2-0 win in Madrid, and they can be backed at an average odds-on price of 1.06 to reach the semi-finals once again. As for Chelsea, they’re priced at around 8.00 to achieve the same objective, and scoring the first goal in the second leg may be central to their chances of success.
4️⃣ What are the Odds for Both Sides to Win the 2022/23 Champions League?
The outright odds are constantly shifting and saw a significant jump after some decisive results in the quarterfinal first legs. Madrid’s 2-0 win over Chelsea saw them become the second favourites to win the 2022/23 UCL at an average price of 5.00, for example, whereas the Blues are now as long as 67.00 with some sportsbooks to repeat their triumph of 2021.
