Day three at Punchestown revolves around the Champion Stayers Hurdle, a three-mile contest won in recent times by the likes of Faugheen, Unowhatimeanharry, Klassical Dream and reigning champ Teahupoo. There's top prize of the €180,000 to be won this time around and below you'll find our guide to the Punchestown Champion Stayers runners alongside the odds from some of the leading betting sites for the day three feature race at Ireland's end of season jumps carnival.
🏆 Punchestown Champion Stayers Hurdle Prediction
Just eight horses have managed to win this prize since 2008, with Quevega, Unowhatimeanharry and Klassical Dream accounting for nine of those wins. Last year's winner Teahupoo could well be set to ensure that elite club doesn't admit a new member now. The Gordon Elliott-trained inmate was kept fresh for last month's Stayers' Hurdle in Cheltenham but he was pipped late in the piece by Rachael Blackmore's inspired ride on Bob Olinger, as the winner maintained his perfect record around the Cotswolds venue.
Henry De Bromhead's charge has never raced around here over hurdles, though he did win a novice chase at Punchestown in 2022. Teahupoo is best when fresh so it was no shock in the end when he bypassed Aintree. Seven weeks have passed since Cheltenham and the eight-year-old is fancied to become the latest horse to win multiple renewals of this contest and our Punchestown Champion Stayers Hurdle prediction is for Teahupoo to win. There are five days of brilliant racing to enjoy at the Punchestown Festival and lots of free bets to help you enjoy the action from Co Kildare.
OUR PREDICTION: 🏆 TEAHUPOO TO WIN 🏆
🏇 Champion Stayers Hurdle Betting Preview
The latest Punchestown Champion Stayers Hurdle odds have reigning champion Teahupoo atop the betting to win again as he looks to become the fourth repeat winner of this race since 2010. Gordon Elliott's star is the one to beat but Bob Olinger denied him at Cheltenham in March and could offer stern resistance again.
Home By The Lee, Asterion Forlonge and Hiddenvalley Lake are established in this division and could be amongst the Punchestown Champion Stayers Hurdle favourites 2025, while Crambo is a dual Grade 1 winner in Britain and adds some spice for trainer Fergal O'Brien and Rocky's Diamond is an up and comer with a chance for trainer Declan Queally. As always, there is value to be found in shopping around for the best prices on the market and our bookmaker reviews will help you choose the best place for your punting needs as you consider the Punchestown Champion Stayers Hurdle betting tips below.
1️⃣ Teahupoo / Gordon Elliott
The Punchestown Champion Stayers Hurdle winner of 2024, Gordon Elliott's Teahupoo could well become the latest to stage a repeat performance. It didn't quite work out that way for him at the Cheltenham Festival, as he surrendered his Stayers' title there to Bob Olinger, but that rival was maintaining an unbeaten record at the Cotswolds venue. Teahupoo won this by more than six-lengths last year and, after a nice seven-week break, looks primed again in the Robcour colours. He's best priced at 3.00 at William Hill and is of serious interest.
2️⃣ Crambo / Fergal O'Brien
A UK raider winning a Championship race in Punchestown would be some tonic for the raiding party after Willie Mullins retained the horse racing trainers' championship in Britain last week. Fergal O'Brien's Crambo is a two-time winner of Ascot's Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle at this three-mile trip. It didn't happen for him in the Stayers' Hurdle at Cheltenham but he is 0-3 at that venue now and it really doesn't appear to bring out the best in him.
This right-handed track could be much more to his liking and he's still just eight-year-old with only 13 hurdles run behind him. He's got six wins in that sequence, two of them at Grade 1 level, and it would be folly to write him off. He's priced at 2.50 with LeoVegas to win this contest and he would be a hugely popular Punchestown Festival scorer for the much-loved Fergal O'Brien.
3️⃣ Rocky's Diamond / Declan Queally
Rocky's Diamond will be aiming to become the first five-year-old winner of this race since Paddy's Return in 1997. Declan Queally's charge won the John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle in January and was duly allowed take his chance in the Stayers' Hurdle at Cheltenham in March, where he was a very honourable fourth behind the likes of Bob Olinger and Teahupoo. He ran a big race at major odds and could go well again now at 11.00 at William Hill. That could be a generous price and he completes our trio of tips for the Punchestown Champion Stayers Hurdle.
