Who will go on to win the Grand National this year? Unfortunately, I do not have a crystal ball that will give us the answer to this question, but what I do have is plenty of horse racing knowledge, which I am going to put to good use to try and predict the Grand National winner for the 2024 edition. This is one of the hardest races to predict, but I will do my best.
🏇 Grand National 2024 Betting Preview
The Grand National, which takes place every year at the Aintree Racecourse, was first run back in 1839, and it is now one of the most prestigious and valuable jump races in Europe, with the winners earning a cheque for £500,000. This 4-mile and 2 1/2 furlong race has even become a popular betting event for those who do not like horse racing. It has been predicted that close to £200 million will be bet on the Grand National 2024 odds.
Below I am going to take you through three Grand National runners who I believe stand a very good chance of winning this year's race. I will provide you with their pros and cons and the odds that some top Irish betting sites are currently offering.
1️⃣Corach Rambler
He won the 2023 edition of the Grand National, and if he retains his title then he will emulate Red Rum and Tiger Roll by becoming a back-to-back Grand National winner. He finished third in the recent Cheltenham Gold Cup, and loves racing in Spring - his form in March and April read 31111. He might be 13 pounds higher than last year, but it is easy to see why he is the favourite.
However, some punters might be put off by the fact that eight of the previous 11 winners were between the ages of seven and nine. Furthermore, he had a gruelling battle in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, which could have left its mark.
2️⃣ I Am Maximus
I Am Maximus, who is trained by Willie Mullins, shot to the top of the outright market after his 14-length victory over Vanillier, the 2023 Grand National runner-up, at Fairyhouse in March. He will be tackling this race for the first time and will be entering this race pretty fresh as he has not raced much this year.
There will be many punters betting on him, but something to keep in mind is that all of his wins since his maiden victory at Newbury in 2021 have come at Fairyhouse. He has struggled to replicate this form elsewhere, suffering some heavy defeats along the way. For those who still want to bet on him, he could be an all-or-nothing option.
3️⃣ Vanillier
Vanillier gave a very good account of himself in last year's Grand National, but he left it a little too late and was beaten by under three lengths by Corach Rambler. This year, he is just four pounds higher with his handicap and comes with a 9-pound pull on the weights with the favourite, Corach Rambler.
Over the last year, Vanillier has had three runs over 2 miles, 2 miles 4 furlongs, and 2 miles 5 furlongs, and suffered a heavy defeat to I Am Maximum in his previous race. He should not be judged too harshly on his previous race though, since he might have been a bit rusty. His main aim this season is to win the Grand National, so a quiet preparation was always on the cards.

📊 Grand National Winners
When you are thinking about betting on big horse racing events, you should always have a look at previous winners because experience is something that can play a huge part in whether a horse goes on to win. The jockey and the trainer also play a huge part in the success that a horse has, so those should not be overlooked either. With this in mind, below you can find the previous eight winners of the Grand National.
Year | Horse | Jockey | Trainer | SP |
---|---|---|---|---|
2023 | Corach Rambler | Derek Fox | Lucinda Russell | 8/1 F |
2022 | Noble Yeats | Sam Waley-Cohen | Emmet Mullins | 50/1 |
2021 | Minella Times | Rachael Blackmore | Henry de Bromhead | 11/1 |
2019 | Tiger Roll | Davy Russell | Gordon Elliott | 4/1 F |
2018 | Tiger Roll | Davy Russell | Gordon Elliot | 10/1 |
2017 | One For Arthur | Derek Fox | Lucinda Russell | 14/1 |
2016 | Rule The World | David Mullins | Mouse Morris | 33/1 |
2015 | Many Clouds | Leighton Aspell | Oliver Sherwood | 25/1 |
🏆 Grand National Prediction
In the previous century, only three horses have managed to win the Grand National back-to-back, while the favourites at the start of the race have only won on 11 occasions. These are stats that will make many think twice about backing Corach Rambler, but I am going to back him to make history on Saturday. If he wins, he will be the first horse to win back-to-back Grand National titles as the favourite on both occasions.
Corach Rambler is the horse in form and one of the safest jumpers to boot - he is yet to fall in a race. His build-up to this year's Grand National has been similar to last year, and he is a few pounds better off this time around. Furthermore, with a maximum of 34 runners this time, there will be less chance of him being brought down by a stray horse.
While I like the looks of I Am Maximus and Vanillier, I cannot look beyond Corach Rambler, especially after his showing in the recent Cheltenham Gold Cup. He is one of the Grand National favourites in 2024 for a reason.
My 2024 Grand National Prediction: Corach Rambler to win.
⭐ Grand National Betting Tips
Now that you know my Grand National predictions, I am going to finish off by providing you with some top horse racing betting advice for this big race. There are several trends that can give us a good idea as to who has a great shot of winning.
Age
The first trend to look at is the age of the horse. The fences at Aintree require a level of maturity from the runners that comes with experience and age. So, eliminate those horses which are younger than eight and older than ten. Seven of the previous ten Grand National winners have hailed from this age group - Only Auroras Encore (11), Pineau De Re (11) and Noble Yeats (7) have bucked this trend.
Weight
The handicap system was put in place to give every horse a fairer crack at winning. Thus, those horses that are perceived to have greater ability will need to carry more weight than those horses that are thought to have less ability. From previous stats, we know that horses carrying more than 11 stone and 3 pounds have struggled - only four horses have managed to beat such a handicap.
Eight of the previous ten winners of the Grand National have weighed 10-13 or less, so this is something that you should keep in mind when picking your horses.
Aintree Factor
It really does make a big difference if the horse that you back has previously raced and done well on the Aintree racecourse - even more so if they have done so over the famed Grand National fences. So, if they have run the Grand National in the past or raced in the Topham Chase or Becher Chase and finished the race, then it is proof that they have the jumping ability to compete once again.
Form
Regarding form, you need to check out how a horse has been running over the last few seasons. Horses that pull up consistently or fall should be removed from your equation. Pineau De Re, who won in 2014, had fallen just twice in two years before his big win and had never pulled out of a race. Some horses have a history of refusing to run, such as Battlegroup - before the 2014 Grand National, he pulled up twice and refused to run in three races, and then he did not budge from the starting line in the big race.
