⚡ JRL Group Liverpool Hurdle 2023 Preview
As you can see, betting on the JRL Group Liverpool Hurdle will be challenging in 2023, with a number of high-quality runners set to compete over the race’s three-mile course. However, I’ve identified four potential JRL Group Liverpool Hurdle winners and the runners most likely to deliver a return on your stake!
1️⃣ Maries Rock
Maries Rock is the ante post favourite to win the 2023 Liverpool Hurdle at an average price of 11/4 with Betinireland’s recommended sportsbooks. This is despite a disappointing showing in the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham last time out in March, when the eight-year-old eventually trailed in seventh place and finished 15 lengths behind the winner Honeysuckle (failing to defend her title in the process).
There’s a clear consensus that this performance didn’t adequately reflect the Nicky Henderson-trained runner’s abilities, and this was previously borne out by a run of four successive wins between February 2022 and March 2023.
This sequence included an excellent win in the Grade 2 Relkeel Hurdle at Cheltenham in January, when Maries Rock prevailed by six lengths from Liverpool Hurdle rival Dashel Drasher.
Overall, the runner has won seven of her 13 hurdle outings to date, while earning nine top three finishes in total. So, although this will be her first run over a course of three miles or more, Maries Rock is a worthy favourite and one who will be hopeful of returning to winning ways at Aintree.
2️⃣ Teahupoo
Next up is Gordon Elliott’s six-year-old mare Teahupoo, who also has an impressive career record with eight wins in 12 hurdle outings. Overall, this runner has placed in the top three in 10 career outings, and will start the 2023 Liverpool Hurdle priced at around 3/1.
Last time out, Teahupoo placed third in the Grade 1 Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival, performing relatively well in a competitive field of 11. However, she did start this race as the 9/4 favourite, before trailing the eventual winner and fellow Liverpool Hurdle runner Sire Du Berlais by ¾ of a length in a tense and incredibly close finish.
She was also beaten into third by a dogged Dashel Drasher, who started as a 40/1 shot at Cheltenham and will also be competing in the 2023 iteration of the Liverpool Hurdle.
Previously, Teahupoo had recorded a dominant win at Gowran Park in January, beating Summerville Boy by a whopping 15 lengths. She also won at Fairyhouse in December 2022, and remains a keen competitor who has already showcased her ability over three miles or more.
3️⃣ Sire Du Berlais
Few fancied Teahupoo’s stablemate at Gordon Elliott’s Cullentra House to win the aforementioned Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, especially given his career record of five wins in 28 outings over the hurdles. To this end, the seasoned 11-year-old gelding started at a price of 33/1, but overcame a poor jump five fences out to pass the leaders approaching the last and edge ahead in the final 110 yards. He subsequently prevailed by just ¾ of a length from Dashel Drasher and Teahupoo, earning his first win since April 2022 (when he also won the iconic Liverpool Hurdle).
So, not only will Sire Du Berlais be looking to defend the crown he surprisingly won at Aintree last year, but he’ll also be confident of lasting the challenging three-mile course and overcoming a number of considerably younger rivals.
Given his advancing age and inconsistent form over the hurdles, however, Sire Du Berlais probably offers better value as an each-way bet, particularly given his current starting price of around 6/1.
4️⃣ Dashel Drasher
On the topic of excellent each-way bets, the Jeremy Scott-trained Dashel Drasher is well worth consideration. After all, this experienced 10-year-old gelding has placed in the top three in eight of his last nine hurdle outings, while his overall National Hunt career has seen him finish third or better in nine of 11 races.
He has also recorded four consecutive second place finishes since December 22nd, with this sequence including the 2023 Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Both he and Sire Du Berlais surprised the bookmakers with their performance over the three-mile course, with Dashel Drasher having started the race priced at a staggering 40/1 to win.
He also won the Class 2 BoyleSports Best Odds Guaranteed Day Before Hurdle at Aintree last November, when he defeated the excellent Voix Du Reve by 2¾ lengths in soft going.
While Dashel Drasher is often the bridesmaid and rarely the bride in Grade 1 racing, he’s experienced over the distance and one of the most competitive runners in the sport. So, although I don’t expect him to win the 2023 iteration of the Liverpool Hurdle, he offers genuine value as a potential each-way wager at a price of around 8/1.
⭐ JRL Group Liverpool Hurdle 2023 Betting Tips
Now it’s time to consider some Liverpool Hurdle betting tips, as you simultaneously look to minimise your risk and optimise any potential returns. Here are some ideas to consider when wagering your hard-earned cash!
✔️ Place Your Ante Post Bets as Soon as Possible
Now that the ante post prices have been published and Liverpool Hurdle 2023 betting has finally gotten underway, there’s likely to be an influx of wagers on favoured runners such as Maries Rock and Sire Du Berlais. As a result, these runners are likely to see their prices drift and shorten as the race draws closer, creating a scenario where the initial ante post odds tend to offer the most value and bang for your buck!
So, I’d urge you to bet early and proactively on the outcome of the Liverpool Hurdle in 2023, whether you intend to back a single outright winner and hedge your bets with one or more each-way wagers. This way, you’ll realise the best value odds and ensure that each individual bet delivers an optimal payout if your selections are successful!
✔️ Study the Relevant Form
Every Liverpool Hurdle betting guide will advise you to study the form before you place any wagers, but this is a broad and vague instruction that offers little in the way of insight to novice punters.
Instead, you should strive to study each runner’s form in its relevant context, by paying particular attention to race factors such as grading, distance and the size and quality of the overall field. For example, a quick glance at Sire Du Berlais’ record shows that the gelding has regularly performed well over three miles, whereas favourite Maries Rock has yet to complete a course of this length.
Similarly, pay attention to the going, as this will help to determine the conditions in which each horse performs best. Currently, the going at Aintree is expected to be ‘good’ during the Grand National weekend, with this likely to favour some runners more than others.
In addition to appraising form, consider analysing some of the most relevant JRL Group Liverpool Hurdle trends. For example, it’s interesting to note that Cheltenham Racecourse has produced the most Liverpool Hurdle winners, with 15 runners who triumphed in this race having previously prevailed at Cheltenham last time out!
✔️ Manage Your Bankroll Responsibly
Bankroll management is central to successful sports betting and horse racing betting, especially if you’re able to wager within your means and spread your cash as far as possible. This is even more important when engaging in Grand National betting, as the Aintree Festival features a total of 21 superb races across three days of high octane action!
The first rule of bankroll management is that you should never wager more than you can afford to lose within a specified timeframe, whether this is a day, week, month or the duration of a particular festival. You can also use the deposit limits deployed by sportsbooks to help practically manage your bankroll, as they cap the amount of money you can credit to your account over time.
In order to further manage your bankroll, consider tailoring your stakes to suit the odds in play and associated risk/reward ratio. More specifically, you should start with a single betting unit and increase this incrementally when backing short-priced favourites with an excellent chance of winning. Conversely, you can reduce your stake when betting on outsiders with much higher odds, as this helps to manage risk without overly compromising on your returns.
Finally, remember to carry out a detailed Liverpool Hurdle odds comparison if you’re wagering online. This ensures that you identify the best value prices in real-time, while also unlocking potential price boosts or guaranteed odds promotions when they’re available.
🏆 JRL Group Liverpool Hurdle 2023 Favourites to Win
There’s no doubt that making Liverpool Hurdle predictions is a challenging pastime in 2023, with a handful of evenly matched runners capable of winning this Grade 1 race. What’s more, each of the ante post favourites has overt flaws that may undermine their chances of success, and this could contribute to a thrilling and unpredictable race that goes to the wire.
Maries Rock is the early favourite, for example, but despite winning four consecutive races between February 2022 and March 2023, she limped home in seventh place when defending the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle at the recent Cheltenham Festival. She has also never competed over three miles, so there remain slight doubts about her ability to last the course.
Conversely, Sire Du Berlais is now 11 years old and far from consistent, with a career win percentage of just 20.6% in National Hunt races. However, he has a penchant for performing on the big occasion and over longer distances, having won the Liverpool Hurdle at 16/1 last year and delivered an even greater shock when claiming the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham at odds of 33/1.
Because of this, my Liverpool Hurdle winner prediction is that Sire Du Berlais will shock the world one more time, by defending his title at Aintree and claiming another impressive hurdle scalp at a best price of 7/1 with William Hill Sports.
If you’re in the market for an each-way bet, both Maries Rock and Teahupoo offer good value, as does the enduringly consistent Dashel Drasher. Jeremy Scott’s runner will certainly hope to extend a run of four successive second place finishes as a minimum requirement, while odds of around 8/1 allow for potentially lucrative each-way wagering.
🐎 My Prediction: Sire Du Berlais to Win at 7/1 With William Hill Sports
