The world's premier Classic, the Epsom Derby is famed as being the ultimate turf test of a thoroughbred. The Group 1 contest, traditionally run on the first Saturday in June, is the jewel in the crown of Britain's five Classic races for three-year-olds, a contest steeped in racing history and folklore and the centrepiece of the Epsom Festival.
We're taking a look ahead to the big event and selecting some of the Epsom Derby 2025 horses that we feel will go well alongside the latest odds for the big event from some of the best betting sites for Irish punters.
🏆 Epsom Derby Prediction & Tips
Trainer Ralph Beckett appears to have a strong double-hand to play with his possible Epsom Derby runners as both Pride Of Arras and Stanhope Gardens are appealing Classic contenders. The former won York's Dante, with leading Ballydoyle hope The Lion In Winter beaten behind him, and is amongst the Epsom Derby favourites 2025 as a consequence. He's a smart contender for sure, but there could be some value in supporting his stablemate Stanhope Gardens instead at the current prices.
Beckett’s Ghaiyyath colt had little trouble winning a three-runner race over a mile at Salisbury on his comeback and he promises to be even better over further. He has just a neck to find with Aidan O’Brien’s Delacroix from their run in the Autumn Stakes last term and that rival heads the Derby market following his latest win in the Leopardstown trial. Stanhope Gardens could still have some major upside to him when tackling a mile-and-a-half and, in that scenario, he looks overpriced.
OUR PREDICTION: 🏆 STANHOPE GARDENS TO WIN 🏆
🏇 Epsom Derby Betting Preview
1️⃣ Stanhope Gardens / Ralph Beckett
The York Dante winner Pride Of Arras is a big contender for Ralph Beckett's team but so, too is Stanhope Gardens. The 210,000 gns son of Ghaiyyath was only a neck behind Delacroix in the Autumn Stakes at Newmarket last season and that runner has only advertised that form positively since, he is favourite coming to this race. Stanhope Gardens showed his well-being on his comeback at Salisbury over a mile and promises to be excel himself at this longer trip. He could represent some excellent each-way value. Punters can avail of a variety of prices and it's well worth shopping around, with our bookmaker reviews offering the perfect accompaniment for choosing the best place to bet.
2️⃣ Delacroix / Aidan O'Brien
The form horse on paper is certainly Delacroix for Aidan O'Brien, the Ballydoyle supremo with a record 10 wins in the Epsom Derby on his CV already. This Dubawi colt gained lots of experience as a juvenile, never finishing outside of the first two in five starts. He won the Group 3 Autumn Stakes at Newmarket and was denied a nose in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes at Doncaster on his final outing. He's 2-2 this season since stepping up in trip and won the Leopardstown Derby Trial in fine style in mid-May. He will feature in many an Epsom Derby prediction given his trainer's superlative record in the race.
3️⃣ Lambourn / Aidan O'Brien
Aidan O'Brien is no stranger to having multiple runners in the Derby and his outsiders are always worth noting, with the likes of Serpentine being the Epsom outright winner in 2020 despite having only shed his maiden tag a week before at the Curragh and never before raced outside of maiden company. Lambourn won two from three last season and started this season by finishing second to Delacroix in the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown. He improved from that to win the Chester Vase in May, really powering through the line on the Roodee as he tacked the Derby trip for the first time. He's a son of the 2012 Epsom hero Camelot and it wouldn't be a major shock if he emulated his sire on famous Downs in this most coveted horse racing prize of them all.
