At the time I wrote this prediction for the Champion Chase Cheltenham, which will be run on the 15th of March, there was just nine horses running in it. With nine horses taking part in the Cheltenham Champion Chase 2023, your betting options are more limited than they would usually be for a big horse race, but some punters might prefer this. When there is a huge number of horses running, it can sometimes be hard to decide on the horse that you want to put your hard-earned money on. Hopefully I can help you with your Queen Mother Champion Chase betting.

In the table above, you will come across the current Champion Chase odds that are being offered to Irish horse racing bettors by the best betting sites. Some of these Cheltenham Champion Chase odds are quite enticing, which is usually the case with regard to betting on horse races. Why is this? Well, it is because of the highly unpredictable nature of the sport. In other sports such as football, the favourites will win quite often, but in horse racing the favourite wins just 30% of the time.

Please remember that the odds for this race will constantly fluctuate as we draw closer to the race day. This means that it is better to sort out your betting for the Champion Chase early as this is when the odds should be at their highest. Obviously, the higher the odds, the bigger your winnings will be should you go on to place a winning bet.

🐎 Champion Chase Preview

When you are doing some Cheltenham Champion Chase 2023 betting it is always a good move to check out how the horses have been performing recently. Horses are no different to footballers or tennis players and can also suffer a dip in form. If you bet on a horse for the Cheltenham Festival Champion Chase that is currently out of form, then you will most likely end up losing your wager. Therefore, in this section of this betting guide, I shall look at four horses that are favourite to go on and win.

▶ Edwardstone

Edwardstone is a 9-year-old bay gelding that has plenty of experience under his belt. To date, he has run in 23 races and from these he has picked up 9 wins, 6 runner-up places, and 2 third places. This means that he has placed in all but five of his races, which is something to think about ahead of the 2023 Champion Chase. His previous races were on the 28th of January 2023 and the 27th of December 2022, and in both of these he lost to Editeur Du Gite. However, despite these two defeats on the spin, the bookmakers and experts obviously see a lot of potential in him as he is the favourite to win this race.

He is currently trained by Alan King, who has had 272 runs in the 2022/23 calendar year and has picked up 43 wins, giving him a pretty respectable win percentage of 16%. He has had 127 places, which means that close to half of his horses over the last year have managed to place. When it comes to Cheltenham though, he has a winning percentage of just 7%, so maybe you will want to keep this in mind when you are thinking about Champion Chase winners.

▶ Energumene

Energumene is a nine-year-old brown gelding that has raced in 13 races to date, picking up 10 wins and three places. He is the reigning champion having won this race last year, and if he manages to defend his title then he will join the likes of Altior, Master Minded, and Viking Flagship in having managed to win this race twice in a row - Badsworth Boy leads the way with three wins in a row between 1983 and 1985. In his most recent race he ran poorly, finishing behind both Edwardstone and Editeur Du Gite, but before that run he had won three on the trott - he won these three races by a combined 32 length margin.

Given his poor last run, the experts are torn as to whether he has the form to win this race. However, he is trained by Willie Mullins, who is one of the most successful trainers in the history of the sport. If anyone can help Energumene put that race firmly behind him, then he can. Over his career he has had close to 5,000 runners, and has a pretty impressive win rate of 25%. When it comes to racing at Cheltenham, he has had 306 runners that have translated into a win percentage of 12% and a place percentage of 30%.

▶ Editeur Du Gite

Editeur Du Gite is a 9-year-old bay gelding that has 16 runs under his belt to date and from these races he has picked up six wins and three places. Despite this victory, he is not expected to win this race which is probably something to do with some patchy form. Although the bookmakers and experts do not reckon that he will managed to beat Edwardstone or Energumene, something to keep in mind is the fact that he raced against these two horses on the 28th of January at Cheltenham and won quite comfortably. He has a very good gallop and just does not give up, and his trainer, owners, and jockey will definitely be confident in his ability to win this race.

Editeur Du Gite is trained by Gary Moore, who has a win percentage of 17% this season and a place percentage of 46%. With regard to Cheltenham, he has had 80 runners here in the past and he has picked up a total of nine wins, giving him a winning percentage of 11%. He has had 28 places, which gives him a place percentage of 35%.

▶ Gentleman De Mee

Gentleman De Mee is a seven-year-old bay gelding that has 12 races under his belt. From these races, he has managed to pick up five wins and one place, which is not the best record, it must be said. The last time we saw this horse was when he returned to some form by winning at Leopardstown on February the 5th, defeat Blue Lord by a total of seven lengths. If you like to back an outsider, then maybe Gentleman De Mee is worth having a look at.

This is Willie Mullins' second horse in this race, so the fact that he is trained by such a successful trainer is certainly something that is worth considering when you are thinking about who will go on to win the Cheltenham Festival Queen Mother Champion Chase.

✔️ Champion Chase Betting Tips

When you go to bet on the 2023 Cheltenham Chase, there is nothing stopping you from just betting on a horse that has a name that you like, but this is a flimsy strategy and not one that will lead to success. Yes, you might get some luck and win some money, but the most likely outcome is that you will just end up counting your losses.

I have a lot of experience when it comes to sports betting, and below I am going to give you some Cheltenham Champion Chase tips that you should keep in mind when gambling on this race. These Champion Chase tips can also come in handy for other big racing events such as Irish Derby betting.

▶ Check the Horses Performance and History

Those who know me will know that I bang on about doing research when betting, but I do not do it because I like the sound of my own voice. No, I repeat myself because it is something that is very important to do, no matter what sport you are betting on. If you do not do your research, then do not be shocked when your bet is a losing one. Obviously, even with research, your bet could lose, but at least you will have given yourself a fighting chance.

When betting on horse races such as the Cheltenham Chase, you need to check out the form of the horse and jockey that have taken your fancy. You need to find out how they have performed in their recent races, whether they have a good history in the race that they will be running in, and whether there are some other factors that could have some sort of impact on the winner of the race. Remember that knowledge is power.

▶ Know the Surface

Sportsmen and women prefer playing on different surfaces and at different venues, and it is no different when it comes to horse. Just like Nadal loves playing on a clay court, a horse might love running at Cheltenham a lot more than at another venue such as Aintree.

So, before you go ahead and finalise your bet, check the type of surface that will be on offer on race day. If it is suspected to be dry and firm, then this is something that will suit those lighter horses. On the other hand, if it is going to be soft, it will be better suited to those hard runners since it will allow them to get some more purchase.

▶ Check Out the Previous Winners

Some horses just know how to win a particular race. For instance, if you check out the history of the Champion Chase, you will see that there have been a number of horses that have won it more than once. As we mentioned above, Badsworth Boy is the most successful horse in this race, with three wins to his name.

You should also check out the trainers and jockeys that have multiple wins in particular race because success, as they say, breed success. Nicky Henderson has won the Champion Chase five times, so if there is a horse running in this race that he has trained, then it might be something worth thinking about. When it comes to successful jockeys, Nico de Boinville has won this race three times, so keep this fact in mind when you are deciding on which horse to bet on.

🏅 Champion Chase 2023 Winner Prediction

So, which horse do I think will go on and win the 2023 Champion Chase? Well, the bookmakers and pundits believe that it will be between Edwardstone and Energumene, but I actually like the look of Editeur Du Gite. He has already shown that he can run well at Cheltenham, and he beat the two favourites comfortably in his previous race, which is a big tick next to his name. The ground should be good, and this is something that I think will make him hard to beat. If you do not think that he has what it takes to win outright, then I think that he is definitely worth an each-way bet.

My 2023 Champion Chase Prediction: Editeur Du Gite to win.
