The Cheltenham betting festival is one of the biggest and most lucrative horse racing events in the world, and one that has come a long way since it originated at Market Harborough way back in 1860. I’ve prepared a comprehensive Ryanair Chase betting guide ahead of the 2023 iteration, which includes a look at the latest wagering odds and markets and even offers some tips to help you make the most of your bankroll.

💯 Ryanair Chase Odds (2023)

I’ll start by taking a closer look at the latest Ryanair chase betting odds, which have recently been published by all of our recommended sportsbooks and some of the best betting sites in Ireland. Of course, these prices are liable to drift and potentially shorten as the race draws closer, so those of you interested in Ryanair chase betting may want to place your outright wagers sooner rather than later.

🏇 Ryanair Chase Preview

Ryanair Chase Betting logo Ryanair Chase Betting logo

This meeting hosts 28 races across four action-packed days, including the £375,000 Ryanair Chase on Thursday, 16th March. This race is a Grade 1 National Hunt steeplechase, and one that’s run on the new course at Cheltenham and features 17 fences across the 4,139-metre distance.

This race is for chasers whose optimal trip sits between that of the Champion Chase and the Gold Cup, while runners who are aged five years or older are able to compete here.

As you can tell from the Ryanair Chase odds 2023, there are two or three runners who are clearly favoured by Betinireland’s sportsbooks. So, I’m going to share my 2023 Ryanair Chase preview with the three most likely winners of this Grade I race, while taking a look at their recent form and most notable wins.

1️⃣ Shiskin

I’ll start with the nine-year old Shiskin, who’s trained by Nicky Henderson and has overcome significant physical challenges in the last 12 months. The Joe Donnelly-owned gelding’s troubles started with disappointing showings in the Champion Chase and Tingle Creek, which followed a superb win over Energumene in the Clarence House Chase last January.

Shiskin was subsequently diagnosed with a rare bone condition and a ‘flipped palate’, and while his recent barnstorming win in the Betfair Ascot Chase suggests that the talented runner may be rejuvenated, his recent injuries have encouraged Henderson to enter him into the Ryanair Chase as opposed to the more challenging Gold Cup.

There’s no doubt that Shiskin was back to his best at Ascot, with this following a solid third-place finish over one mile and seven furlongs at Sandown on December 3rd, 2022. He also boasts an almost perfect record in chase meetings, with this including eight wins in 10 such races and the pull-up at Cheltenham last March that preceded the gelding’s 262-day absence from the sport.

Here is what our partners at BoyleSports had to say about Shishkin's chances of winning the Ryanair Chase are in the video below:

2️⃣ Conflated

The one concern about Shiskin is that the race may have come a little too soon for the gelding, creating a potential opening for fellow nine-year-old Conflated.

The Gordon Elliott-trained runner is another who’s being considered for the Ryanair Chase rather than the Cheltenham Gold Cup, as he looks to build on his impressive Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup win at Leopardstown in December 2022.

Gigginstown House Stud supremo Michael O’Leary (who owns Conflated and Ryanair) would certainly prefer his charge to run in the Ryanair Chase, especially as he sponsors the race and is already entering Savills Chase winner and ante-post favourite Galvin into the Gold Cup.

Overall, Conflated has won two of his last five races, while also earning two placed finishes. He has also placed in the top three in 11 of his 14 steeplechase outings overall, including five impressive wins. However, the second favourite did fall two jumps from home in the same race last year, and this may deter some punters from following the Ryanair chase odds this time around.

3️⃣ Blue Lord

We’ll close with the eight-year-old runner Blue Lord, who has been in exceptional form and actually won three of his last four races dating back to April 28th, 2022.

This sequence has included two wins out of three since the Willie Mullins-trained gelding returned from a 203-day lay-off in November, while his performance when finishing second in the Grade 1 Dublin Chase at Leopardstown on February 5th of this year was truly outstanding.

Owned by Simon Munir & Isaac Souede, Blue Lord has certainly proven his pedigree over similar distances and chase meetings overall, winning six out of eight such races and finishing in the top three in his other two outings.

Interestingly, Blue Lord is the second favourite to prevail among some bookies according to the latest Ryanair Chase odds for 2023, and there certainly aren’t many runners in better form ahead of the race.

✅ Ryanair Chase Betting Tips

Now that I’ve gone through the latest Ryanair Chase betting odds comparison, the question that remains is how can you leverage the available markets to your advantage? Below, you’ll find my expert Ryanair Chase betting tips and insight into how to make the most when engaging in horse racing betting.

1️⃣ Do Your Research

Perhaps the single most important Ryanair Chase Cheltenham betting tip is to carry out thorough research prior to the event. This may sound like an obvious step, but it’s also one that’s easily overlooked during the thrill and excitement of race day.

So, I’d recommend that you research the event well ahead of time, as this enables you to identify the races that you want to bet on and the best value wagers available in each event. Given that the published odds also reveal the implied probability that a particular event will happen, you can calculate your chances of winning and optimise your stake amount accordingly.

You should also make time to research the form of the respective runners over recent chases and hurdle races. Pay particular attention to their form over relevant distances, while also appraising the quality of the field in each race that they’ve won or featured in.

2️⃣ Don’t Bet on Every Race

Remember, the Ryanair Chase is one of 28 races that takes place over four days at the Cheltenham Festival, with more than 250,000 thousand spectators cramming into Cheltenham Racecourse during this period and wagering hundreds and thousands of pounds.

Make no mistake; the Cheltenham Festival is one of the most iconic race meetings in the world, standing alongside similarly outstanding events like Royal Ascot and the Irish Derby. You can learn more about Royal Ascot betting and Irish Derby betting elsewhere on the Betinireland site, with these pages updated regularly too.

The jewel in the Cheltenham crown is the Gold Cup, which is another Grade I National Hunt steeplechase and offers a total prize fund in excess of £468,000. Like the Ryanair Chase, the Gold Cup is open to runners who are five years old and up, so there’s often a significant crossover between these two races and their participants.

Other popular races include the Champion Hurdle, the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Stayers’ Hurdle, all of which tend to dominate both the headlines and betting activity at Cheltenham. This also highlights how most punters like to focus their bankrolls on a select few, targeted races, rather than spreading their stake money much thinner and diminishing any potential returns.

This is excellent advice if you’re betting on the Cheltenham Festival for the first time, as you should remain selective when choosing races and focus on the quality rather than the quantity of your bets.

3️⃣ Manage Your Bankroll

I’ve already spoken about how the initial Ryanair Chase Ante-Post betting odds tend to offer the best value, which is why wagering early can help you to optimise your potential returns while minimising your stake amounts.

This, along with the strategic selection of races, is key to successful bankroll management, which in turn allows you to gamble responsibly at all times and negate the risk of incurring disproportionate losses.

As a starting point, you should make sure that your initial bankroll never exceeds an amount that you can comfortably afford to lose. This should be based on your total income and outgoings, while your bankroll should be calculated to cover a specific period of time according to your circumstances.

You can also use the tools available at Betinireland’s recommended betting sites to help manage your bankroll. For example, you can set daily, weekly or monthly deposit limits when you register for an account, ensuring that you can’t wager outside of your means with a single sportsbook.

4️⃣ A Look at Previous Winners

Most of the early Ryanair chase tips were focused on the brilliant nine-year-old gelding Allaho, who was bidding for a hattrick of triumphs in this race having won impressively in both 2021 and 2022.

However, Willie Mullins-trained runner withdrew from the Cheltenham Festival in its entirety last month after suffering an abdominal bleed, denying him the chance from becoming the first ever three-times Ryanair Chase winner.

In fact, only one other runner has prevailed twice in the Ryanair Chase since its inception in 2005, with Jonjo O’Neill’s ‘Albertas Run’ winning in 2010 and 2011. Other notable winners include Imperial Commander and Frodon, who won three races in total across two Cheltenham Festivals in 2018 and 2019.

I’ve summarized the results of the last five Ryanair chases below, including the name of the winning runners, their riders and trainers.

Go watch Allaho easing his way to victory in 2022:

🏆 Who will Win Ryanair Chase 2023?

The absence of Allaho certainly makes it harder to make any Ryanair chase predictions, with the field now relatively open and featuring no previous winner. Certainly, Allaho’s brilliant front-running performance under the stewardship of Paul Townsend in the 2022 race would have made it hard to pick another winner, and the nine-year-old would definitely have started as favourite this time out.

While Nicky Henderson’s Shiskin is the favourites in his stead, this race may have come a little too soon for the gelding. After all, he missed 262 days of action between March and December due to a combination of a flipped palate and rare bone condition, and despite his exceptional win at the Betfair Ascot Chase in February, his form doesn’t quite support his status as the clear sportsbook favourite.

Instead, this may be the year of the eight-year-old Blue Lord, whose sequence of three wins in his last four chase meetings included an exceptional run in a high-quality field at the Grade 1 Dublin Chase in early February. It should also be noted that Blue Lord is trained by the brilliant Willie Mullins, whose runners have prevailed in the last three Ryanair Chases and five of the last seven overall.

Blue Lord also offers relatively decent value at present, although his average price of 6.00 is likely to shorten incrementally ahead of the race on Thursday, 16th March.

Another potential winner is the eight-year-old Janidil, who’s priced as high as 9.00 to win with Luckster. Another Willie Mullins-trained runner, Janidil actually finished second to Allaho at a price of 13.00 last year, while he looked exceptional last time out when winning over the similar distance of two miles and four furlongs at Gowran Park.

Janidil at least offers excellent value as an each-way bet at its current price, as there’s every chance that he’ll place in the top three at the end of the race.
