The Hammers are looking to complete their first league double over Arsenal since 2006-07, although it should be noted that they’ve already beaten the Gunners twice this season (including a 3-1 League Cup victory in November). Previously, West Ham had won just once in 16 matches against Arsenal in all competitions, since a 2-0 victory at the Emirates in August 2015.

Of course, West Ham’s success against Arsenal has been built on defensive strength, with only three teams winning more tackles than the Hammers’ tally of 266 this season. They also average just 41.4% possession per 90 minutes in the Premier League, and will be happy to let the Gunners have the ball while seeking out opportunities to hit them on the counterattack.

The issue is that this strategy could play into Arsenal’s hands. Even during West Ham’s 2-0 win at the Emirates in December, the Gunners recorded 30 shots on goal and an xG of 2.73, and it was only wasteful finishing that cost Arteta’s men over the 90 minutes. They’re unlikely to be as profligate this time around, especially having rediscovered their shooting boots and struck 10 goals in their last three matches.

1️⃣ West Ham Update

The Hammers form has been somewhat mixed of late, as while they’ve lost just one of their last eight Premier League games, they’re also winless in their last four since defeating the Gunners at the Emirates on December 28th. They haven’t won in six games across all competitions, with this sequence including a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Championship side Bristol City in an FA Cup third round replay. They’ve only scored five goals in these six matches too, with this lack of end product coinciding with the absence of the brilliant Brazilian midfielder Paquetá. He’s not scheduled to return until March either.

The loss of Lucas Paquetá has served a huge blow to West Ham and their attacking output, while he’s not expected to recover from a calf injury until the first week in March. Michail Antonio remains a long-term absentee too, as he continues his own recovery from a serious knee injury. However, the Hammers recently welcomed back both Nayef Aguerd and Mohammed Kudus after their exploits at the African Cup of Nations, although neither was able to prevent a disappointing 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford last time out.

Arsenal were superb in their 3-1 win over Liverpool last time out, playing with intensity and aggression from the outset as they recorded a third successive EPL victory. Interestingly, the Gunners have lost three of their previous seven EPL away games, although they arrested a three-game winless streak on the road by defeating Nottingham Forest 2-1 on January 30th. As I’ve touched on, both Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli have returned to goal scoring form since the turn of the year, while skipper Martin Ødegaard is averaging 6.09 shot-creating actions per 90 in the league. Only James Maddison (7.95) has produced more, and the Norwegian is continuing to have a huge impact in the attacking third.

Gabriel Jesus should be fit to return to the matchday squad this weekend, after missing the visit of Liverpool due to a recurring knee injury. Versatile defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is also in contention to start after returning from international duty in the AFC Asia Cup, although Oleksandr Zinchenko could miss out after a recurrence of his calf injury against Liverpool. Fabio Viera (groin surgery) and Thomas Partey (hamstring) remain unavailable, while Jurien Timber is out for a little longer as he completes his recovery from a cruciate ligament tear.
