On Tuesday, 7th March, Chelsea will entertain Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of their round of 16 clash in the UEFA Champions League. Of course, Chelsea vs Borussia Dortmund is a mouthwatering clash in any context, but this round of 16 tie remains incredibly evenly poised after the Bundesliga side claimed a narrow, 1-0 win over their EPL rivals at the Signal Iduna Park. Forward Karim Adeyemi’s superb solo goal proved to be the difference in Germany, in a thrilling and open encounter that saw 35 combined attempts on goal and both sides missing a swathe of excellent chances.
So, can the return Chelsea vs Dortmund clash deliver a similarly entertaining spectacle, and will the home side overturn their first-leg deficit? Below, I’ve delved a little deeper into the latest Champions League odds while providing a prediction into who I think will win the game at Stamford Bridge (and the tie overall).

🏅Chelsea Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2 Preview
Chelsea were more than competitive in their narrow first leg defeat, recording 21 attempts at goal while seeing Joao Felix and Kai Havertz miss guilt-edged opportunities to find the net at the Signal Iduna Park.
However, this defeat means that the Blues have extended their miserable run of form to just two wins in 13 games, with the club already eliminated from both domestic cup competitions and 10 points adrift of the top four in the Premier League table.
Manager Graham Potter certainly looks like he’s struggling to identify his preferred system and starting 11 amid an influx of winter signings, with the former Brighton boss having won just nine of his 24 matches in charge at a win rate of 37.5%. The only good news is that Chelsea have looked more settled and threatening during their recent visits to West Ham and Dortmund, while record signing Enzo Fernandez has already had a positive impact in midfield.
The Blues may also be boosted by the return of influential midfielder N’Golo Kante, who’s nearing fitness after a serious hamstring injury. However, Christian Pulisic, Raheem Sterling and keeper Edouard Mendy are unlikely to be fit in time, while Armando Broja remains a long-term absentee following his cruciate ligament rupture.

Tweets by Chelsea Champions League⚡ Borussia Dortmund Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2 Preview
Dortmund kicked off the first leg vs Chelsea in excellent form, while they’ve now won all of their seven matches since the resumption of club football in the wake of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
In fact, they haven’t experienced defeat since a 4-2 thumping at Borussia Mönchengladbach on November 11th, with Dortmund’s run of form having seen the side move to within three points of the Bundesliga summit. They’ve also reached the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal, while taking a major step towards the last eight of the UCL following their first leg win over Chelsea.
Of course, Dortmund have also been buoyed by the return of Sebastien Haller following his run-in with cancer, while Jude Bellingham has continued to showcase maturity beyond his years and added goals to his game this season (the 19-year-old has 10 goals in 28 matches across all competitions in 2022/23).
Dortmund will start the return match without Norwegian right back Julian Ryerson, however, who has incurred a one game suspicion after collecting a booking during the first leg. Precocious striker Youssoufa Moukoko also remains absent with a ruptured syndesmotic ligament injury, while young winger Julien Durnaville is a significant doubt with a muscle partial avulsion.

Tweets by Borussia Dortmund Champions League🆚 Chelsea vs Borussia Dortmund Key Matchups
These absences afford us an insight into the potential Chelsea vs Borussia Dortmund lineup for the second leg, although we’ll have to wait to see each side’s starting 11. But what are likely to be the game’s key matchups and individual duels? Here’s three to keep your eyes on!
1️⃣ Reece James vs Karim Adeyemi
The return of right back Reece James has been a huge boon for Graham Potter, with the attack-minded full back crucial to all aspects of Chelsea’s game. Certainly, the defender was a key leader of the side’s high press under the stewardship of Thomas Tuchel, while his defensive aggression and positional sense are both exceptional.
He certainly played well in Germany, driving forward at every opportunity from right back and going close from a couple of central free kicks.
However, he was defensively tested throughout by Dortmund’s pacy winger Karim Adeyemi, whose speed and direct running style will pose a threat to any defender. While he wasn’t directly culpable for Adeyemi’s superb solo goal (which occurred following a break from a corner), he was occasionally caught out of position and by Dortmund’s swift transitions.
James will also look to bomb on during the home leg as Chelsea look to overturn their first leg defeat, but he’ll have to remain mindful of Adeyemi’s threat throughout (particularly if the Blues continue to deploy a back four).
2️⃣ Enzo Fernandez vs Jude Bellingham
Despite Chelsea’s patchy form of late, £106 million signing and World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez has delivered some relatively impressive performances since his arrival. He’s certainly a well-rounded midfielder with excellent ball recovery and passing skills, although Chelsea fans have yet to benefit from the 22-year-old’s clear eye for goal.
His battle with the aforementioned Jude Bellingham was a fascinating element of the first leg, as both looked to physically dominate the middle of the park and drive their teammates forward.
This contest will resume in earnest in the return leg, especially as Chelsea look to dominate possession and create enough chances in the final third to ultimately put Dortmund to the sword.
For Bellingham’s part, the young Englishman is likely to use his physical superiority against Fernandez, while taking every opportunity to run off the back of his opponent and pose a goal threat. This is why N’Golo Kante’s return could be key, while Potter could also deploy a more orthodox three-man midfield to counter Bellingham’s threat.
3️⃣ Kai Havertz vs Niklas Süle
Kai Havertz is likely to remain as Chelsea’s makeshift number nine against Dortmund, especially with Broja injured and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang seemingly out of favour at the Bridge.
However, despite his overt talent and versatility, Havertz has yet to convince as a central striker, scoring just six goals in 30 appearances so far this season and struggling to hold the ball up or successfully link play. He also missed a couple of decent chances in Germany and will have to improve markedly in the return leg if Chelsea are to prevail.
Still, he remains a genuine threat in the air, while his sharp movement and intelligence could pose a problem for Dortmund’s 27-year-old centre back Niklas Süle.
The latter occasionally struggled with Havertz’s movement during the first leg, and the ability of Chelsea to move the ball quickly and get their forward in behind will help them to leverage this to their advantage.
📈 Chelsea vs Borussia Dortmund Head-to-Head Statistics
Incredibly, the first leg clash at the Signal Iduna Park saw Chelsea play Borussia Dortmund for the very first time, either in the UEFA Champions League or any other competitive European tournament.
Of course, this makes the task of offering an accurate Chelsea vs Dortmund prediction much harder than it should be, but I can at least draw some insight from the first leg clash and how the teams lined up against one another.
Certainly, both sides looked threatening from an offensive perspective and showcased vulnerabilities at the back, so the second leg should also see a similarly keenly contested and open game.
This also means that the second leg and overall tie should be decided by the finest of margins, which could make Dortmund’s 1-0 in the first match potentially decisive once the dust settles at Stamford Bridge.

🏆 Chelsea vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction – Who will Win?
At this stage, I’m going to offer my Chelsea vs Borussia Dortmund 2nd leg prediction, while also reaffirming who I think will win the round of 16 tie overall and progress to the UCL quarterfinals.
Although this is a difficult match to call, there’s no doubt that the sportsbooks are expecting a definitive Chelsea win at Stamford Bridge, with Dortmund priced at an average of 4.50 to emerge victorious from the second leg.
While I tend to agree that a Dortmund win in London is relatively unlikely, I’m not convinced that Chelsea will have enough to edge the contest either. After all, they continue to lack a cutting edge in attack, while Dortmund looks to have a much more settled and cohesive unit that will remain a constant threat in transition at Stamford Bridge.
Because of this, I’m opting for a high-scoring draw at the Bridge, with Dortmund’s superior firepower affording them a critical advantage away from home. This would also see the Bundesliga side qualify for the last eight, thanks in no small part to their first leg win!

🔍Chelsea vs Borussia Dortmund Betting Tips

Now it’s time for my Chelsea vs Borussia Dortmund betting tips, based on my prediction and the best value wagering markets that are currently in play. Here are three such tips to help inform your bets!
1️⃣ Backing the Draw at 4.10 with Luckster
Given my match prediction, one of the best Chelsea vs Borussia Dortmund tips that I can offer is to bet on the second leg ending in a draw.
You can get on this market at an attractive price of 4.10 with Luckster, enabling you to access a decent return with only a minimal stake (which can help to negate the risk associated with match betting).
There’s no doubt that these sides are incredibly evenly matched, while the second leg could be even more open and end-to-end given what’s at stake.
What’s clear, however, is that both sides will take their turn to attack and counterattack, with the result that there could be several goals and a nip-and-tuck game where neither Chelsea nor Dortmund have the advantage for long.
2️⃣ Over 2.5 Goals at 1.80 with Multiple Sportsbooks
Dortmund will be happy to play on the counterattack from the start of the second leg, with the onus on Chelsea to get on the front foot and create chances in their quest to overturn their first leg deficit.
However, the Bundesliga side are used to playing in such a manner and will commit men forward in numbers when they do counterattack, creating an end-to-end encounter that could produce a high volume of scoring chances and goals.
This could prove particularly true if there’s an early scored by either side, so I’d recommend betting on their being over 2.5 goals scored during the game at a price of 1.80 with a number of leading sportsbooks (including TonyBet Sports, PalmSlots Sports, Unibet and Ladbrokes).
If you agree with me that there’s likely to be more than 3.5 goals scored in the game, you can also access this slightly higher risk wager at a competitive price of 3.13 with TonyBet Sports.
3️⃣ Both Sides to Score and the Game to End in a Draw
While there’s little value on backing on both sides to score at Stamford Bridge (this outcome is relatively low priced), you can access much more competitive odds by combining this with the match result.
For example, William Hill is offering odds of 4.80 that both sides will score and that the game will end in a draw, which compliments with my match prediction perfectly and reflects the evenly matched nature of this second leg clash.
If you really fancy Dortmund to overcome Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, you could even wager on both sides to score and the Germans to prevail at a price of 8.50 with the same sportsbook.
Of course, this represents another high-risk wager, and one that’s best leveraged with a small or nominal stake that’s still capable of delivering an impressive return.

While Dortmund prevailed last time out at home, the sportsbooks have gone big on a Chelsea win at Stamford Bridge. If you don’t expect the match to end in a draw and want to back a winner, you can bet on Chelsea to win at a leading price of 1.80 with TonyBet Sports. As this second leg tie between Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund will also decide the round of 16 tie, you may want to bet on which side will progress to the quarterfinals. Borussia Dortmund are the current favourites to progress at an average price of 1.85 (thanks largely to their first leg win), while Chelsea have a slightly longer average price of 2.20.
