2022/23 Champions League betting favourites restart their campaign on Wednesday 22nd February, as they visit Germany to take on Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in the first leg of their round of 16 clash.

Pep Guardiola’s men are also heavy favourites to win in Germany and the tie overall, and we’ll touch further on the latest Leipzig vs Man City odds later in this guide. However, Leipzig is a highly competitive and technically proficient side, while it should be noted that they defeated Real Madrid 3-2 at home during the Champions League group stages.

🏅 RB Leipzig Champions League Round of 16 Leg 1 Preview

Despite Leipzig’s clear status as underdogs against City, the side has actually embarked on a rich run of form after an indifferent start to their 2022/23 campaign.

In fact, the team is unbeaten in 16 matches across all competitions since a 3-0 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach on September 17th, which came hot on the heels of a 2-0 loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in their second UCL group stage game. Since then, they’ve progressed to a DFB-Pokal round of 16 clash with 1899 Hoffenheim, while also winning eight of 11 Bundesliga games to move third and just two points behind leaders Bayern.

In Europe, they followed two defeats in their opening two games with four successive wins, including the aforementioned victory over Real Madrid in a thrilling contest. This saw Leipzig earn 12 points in Group F and qualify in second place behind Los Blancos, with Celtic and Shakhtar also vanquished comfortably at home.

However, Leipzig will be without their talismanic and Chelsea-bound forward Christopher Nkunku for the first leg, although he may have recovered from a torn knee ligament in time for the return match. Keeper Peter Gulacsi is also sidelined with a ruptured cruciate ligament, while Abdou Diallo (knee) and winger Dani Olmo (muscle injury) are expected to miss out.

⚡ Manchester City Champions League Round of 16 Leg 1 Preview

Manchester City have experienced a strange season in some respects, as despite usually dominating the Premier League and winning the title in four of the previous five seasons, they find themselves trailing a rejuvenated Arsenal side by five points at present (having played a game more too).

This lead has built during a relatively indifferent run of form during the winter and either side of the World Cup break, when City won just two out of five EPL games and were beaten by both Brentford and bitter rivals Manchester United. Although they’ve since recovered to score seven times in consecutive wins over Spurs and Wolves at the Etihad Stadium, they have it all to do to retain their Premier League crown.

However, City would probably accept this in exchange for a coveted Champions League crown, which was thought to be the Holy Grail when Pep Guardiola was appointed as manager in the summer of 2016. The good news is that they qualified for the 2022/23 round of 16 with relative ease, winning four of their six games (drawing the other two) and scoring 14 goals in the process.

So, they’re in a relatively good place in the UCL, with no players currently injured or suspended for the first leg encounter with RB Leipzig. Of course, Benjamin Mendy remains a long-term absentee after his ongoing legal issues, but he hasn’t been a member of City’s first team squad for some time now and isn’t registered to compete in the Champions League.

🆚 RB Leipzig vs Man City Key Matchups

The loss of both Nkunku and Olmo is significant for Leipzig, even if the former is able to return in time for the second leg. It may be too late by then, so let’s take a look at the Leipzig vs Man City lineup information and individual duels that are likely to influence the outcome of the game.

1️⃣ Dominik Szoboszlai vs Rodri

22-year-old Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai remains one of Leipzig’s key cogs in the central midfield area, with his dynamism, positional awareness and eye for goal marking him as an important player both in and out of possession.

Certainly, Szoboszlai regularly leads the press and counter press when Leipzig are out of possession or in transition, while his lung-bursting runs from midfield and shooting ability make him a threat during attacking phases.

It will be the cultured Rodri who most likely comes face to face with Dominik Szoboszlai in the middle of the park, with the Spaniard renowned for his outstanding positional sense and ability on the ball.

He’ll aim to track Szoboszlai’s runs and prevent him from receiving the ball in the final third, while the Hungarian will look to run off the back of Rodri and beyond City’s high and compact defensive line. So, it should be a great battle to watch!

2️⃣ Joško Gvardiol vs Erling Haaland

While the 2022 FIFA World Cup undoubtedly belonged to Lionel Messi, Croatia’s cultured 21-year-old centre back Joško Gvardiol also emerged as one of the young stars of the tournament.

Gvardiol, who was targeted by Chelsea during the last summer window, was an immovable object for his country throughout the tournament, with Messi the only player to dribble past him and beat him in a one-on-one situation throughout.

However, he will have his hands full against the ominous and physically imposing figure of Erling Haaland, with the prolific Norwegian having plundered 31 goals in just 25 matches in all competitions so far this campaign.

This includes four Champions League goals in five matches, taking his career tally to 32 goals in just 29 games. With his pace and power, he’ll look to get in behind Gvardiol at every opportunity, but the Croatian has the athleticism and recovery speed to match his opponent.

3️⃣ Timo Werner vs Kyle Walker

While this may seem like a strange pick as a key battle in the RB Leipzig vs Manchester City clash, it should be remembered that the pacy and mobile forward Timo Werner has scored 10 goals in 19 times since returning from a disappointing spell at Chelsea.

What’s more, he was a constant thorn in Pep Guardiola’s side during his time in England, playing a key role as Thomas Tuchel’s men beat City three times in two months towards the end of the 2020/21 campaign (including a 1-0 win the UCL final at the Estádio do Dragão in Porto).

The key weapon in Werner’s armoury is his pace, but in addition to his ability to penetrate in behind defences, he’s also blessed with intelligent movement that can occupy defenders and create space for others.

While right back Kyle Walker is also quick, he often plays quite narrow and high in central midfield, and Leipzig will look to target this space (and Werner) with regular switches of play and balls over the top.

📈 RB Leipzig vs Manchester City Head-to-Head Statistics

RB Leipzig was only formed after the turn of the century, so it should come as no surprise that they haven’t faced Manchester City or any other major European side on many occasions.

In fact, the two sides have only met twice in their respective histories, both of which came during the group stages of the 2021/22 campaign. The first was a highly entertaining game at the Etihad Stadium, which produced nine goals and a 6-3 win for City. However, Nkunku was an exceptional and constant threat for Leipzig, who could and probably should have scored more in an incredible game.

However, the Germans gained a modicum of revenge during the return match, albeit in a game that was a dead rubber for City who had already qualified for the round of 16. They prevailed 2-1 at the Red Bull Arena, aided by Kyle Walker’s late red card and despite a 77th minute goal by Riyad Mahrez.

So, the sides have one win apiece in competitive European competition, with City favourites to add to this during the current ULC campaign.

🏆 RB Leipzig vs Man City Prediction – Who will Win?

Now it’s time for my Leipzig vs Man City 1st leg prediction, with the bookmakers clearly of the opinion that Pep Guardiola’s outstanding team will have too much for their Bundesliga opponents.

There’s also a growing sense that City will prioritise the Champions League this season, with Arsenal maintaining a healthy lead on the EPL table and the UCL remaining something of an obsession for the Citizens and their Spanish coach.

While I don’t think that the odds accurately reflect the quality of Leipzig and the threat that they pose to Manchester City (or the importance of home advantage), I do think that they’ win in Leipzig. The absence of Nkunku and Olmo will be particularly damaging for Leipzig, while I’d expect City to dominate possession and create enough chances for goal-hungry Haaland.

So, my RB Leipzig vs Manchester City prediction is that the latter will win in a potentially high scoring game, possibly by a couple of goals.

🔍 RB Leipzig vs Manchester City Betting Tips

Having taken a detailed look at the latest odds and key individual duels, it’s time for me to offer some expert Leipzig vs Man City tips. Hopefully, these can help you to make informed betting selections and decision, and ultimately make the most of your available bankroll.

1️⃣ Both Sides to Score at 1.58 with TonyBet Sports

Given City’s short price as potential match winners, I don’t think there is a great deal of value to be had in simply backing Pep Guardiola’s side to win the first leg.

However, there’s far greater value in betting on both sides to score at the Red Bull Arena, with both sides known to be aggressive and progressive by nature and keen to press high up the pitch at every opportunity. Remember, the away goals’ rule has also been removed, so Leipzig can attack their opponents without having to worry too much about conceding too many at home.

Even without the aforementioned Nkunku and Olmo to call on, Leipzig retain genuine attacking threats in Werner and Szoboszlai, while City have an embarrassment of forward riches and the world’s most in-form striker in Erling Haaland.

So, get on both sides to score at 1.58 with TonyBet Sports, with this capable of delivering a decent return on your stake.

2️⃣ Betting on There Being Over 2.5 Goals at 1.60 with Multiple Sportsbooks

As you can see from my RB Leipzig vs Manchester City prediction, I’m expecting there to be plenty of goals as two attacking and technically outstanding sides go toe-to-toe in their bid to secure a crucial advantage in this two-legged tie.

The bookies seem to agree with me, as they’re offering relatively short prices on there being over 2.5 goals scored during the game. Conversely, the prices for there being under 2.5 goals are much higher, so there’s a consensus that this will be a free-flowing and high-scoring contest.

So, you may want to wager on there being more than 2.5 goals at a market-leading price of 1.60 with a number of sportsbooks; namely PalmSlots Sports, Unibet, Ladbrokes Sports and William Hill.

Just remember to get on this market as soon as you can, as such prices are liable to drift and shorten as the match draws closer.

3️⃣ Half-Time / Full-Time – Man City / Man City at 2.90 with Luckster

Another intriguing market is half-time / full-time betting, which requires you to wager on which side will be leading at different stages of the game.

Because of Manchester City’s penchant for controlling games and maintaining high levels of possession, I’m expecting them to lead throughout, even as Leipzig continue to counter punch and remain competitive when they have the ball.

You can get on this at a current price of 2.90 with Luckster, which is incredibly competitive and offers access to a healthy return even with a nominal stake.

I’d urge you to check this market out in a little more detail before staking your cash, however, as there are various combinations available and you’ll want to tailor your selection to suit your own knowledge and analysis.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions About RB Leipzig vs Manchester City Prediction

Now that I’ve shared my RB Leipzig vs Manchester City Champions League prediction and analysis of the key betting markets, I’m going to answer a few of your most frequently asked questions. These include:

1️⃣ RB Leipzig vs Man City Champions League Leg 1 – Who Will Win?

While Leipzig will be much more competitive than the ante-post bookmakers’ odds suggest, I still think that they’re likely to lose against Manchester City. This observation is compounded by the likely absence of Nkunku and Olmo in attack, as this will weaken Leipzig and their ability to counter City as effectively as possible.

2️⃣ What’s the best price for Man City to beat Leipzig?

If you share my opinion that Manchester City will beat Leipzig in the first leg at the Red Bull Arena, you can back this outcome at a market leading price of 1.80 with Ladbrokes and William Hill. Conversely, Leipzig are priced as high as 4.20 to win with PalmSlots Sports, Luckster and Unibet, and this may be tempting for those of you who like to place outside bets with nominal stakes.

3️⃣ Where Can I Watch RB Leipzig vs Manchester City?

You can watch RB Leipzig entertain Manchester City on BT Sport 1 on Wednesday, 22nd February, with the game scheduled to kick off at 20:00 GMT. You may also be able to live stream the action as it unfolds through your chosen sportsbook, which may be ideal if you like to place frequent, in-play wagers.

4️⃣ Should I Back Either Side to Win the Champions League?

As I’ve already touched on, Man City are the overwhelming favourites to win the Champions League in 2022/23, and you can back Guardiola’s men to end their UCL hoodoo at an average price of 2.63. However, Leipzig are little more than outsiders to win the tournament, with Unibet pricing them as high as 126.00 to achieve this objective.
