🏅 PSG Champions League Round of 16 Leg 1 Preview
If there’s one club that’s synonymous with failure in the Champions League, it’s Ligue 1 giants PSG. Certainly, the side have endured some shocking UCL exits during the course of the last decade, most notably when Barcelona made history by overturning a 4-0 first-leg deficit by defeating the Parisians 6-1 in the return match in a round-of-16 clash in 2016/17.
In 2018/19, PSG were also beaten 3-1 by Manchester United in the second leg of another round of 16 clash at the Le Parc des Princes, as they became the first team to be eliminated after initially winning 2-0 away from home in the first leg.
Still, PSG possess an incredible array of talent (particularly in attack), while they also reached the final in 2019/20 under the astute leadership of German Thomas Tuchel. They also qualified with ease for the round of 16 this time around (remaining unbeaten in Group H), and only missed out on the top spot because rivals Benfica scored more goals away from home (nine vs six).
However, PSG have faltered in Ligue One of late, winning just one of four matches since December 28th and incurring shock defeats at Rennes and fellow title challengers Lille. As a result, the Parisians lead at the top has been slashed to just three points, so Bayern may sense some vulnerability when they arrive on the 14th.
The good news is that their experienced centre-back Presnel Kimpembe remains PSG’s only absentee at present, as he continues to recover from an Achilles injury and is unlikely to be fit in time for the first leg.
📰 Latest PSG Champions League News
Tweets by PSG Champions League⚡ Bayern Munich Champions League Round of 16 Leg 1 Preview
Bayern have a considerably better record in Europe than PSG, having won the European Cup or Champions League six times throughout their history and twice in the last decade. They also defeated PSG 1-0 in the 2019/20 final, as Bayern made history by becoming the first side to lift the UCL crown with a 100% record.
They also qualified for the round of 16 with impressive ease, winning all six of their games and plundering 18 goals as they finished eight points clear of Inter Milan in second place. They also beat Barcelona twice in the process of helping to eliminate them from the tournament, and will undoubtedly fancy their chance of overcoming PSG over two legs.
However, they’ve also seen their domestic form waver since the Bundesliga returned after the World Cup, with Bayern drawing all three of their matches as Union Berlin have closed the gap at the top of the table to just a single point.
Overall, Bayern have drawn seven of their 18 league matches so far in 2022/23, with the club continuing to lack a clinical edge in the wake of Robert Lewandowski’s departure. Sadio Mane, Noussair Mazaoui and Leon Goretzka could also miss the first leg through injury, while Marcel Sabitzer is suspended. Lucas Hernandez and veteran keeper Manuel Neuer remain long-term absentees for the Bavarians.

Tweets by Bayern Munich Champions League🆚 PSG vs Bayern Munich Key Matchups
I’m going to offer my expert PSG vs Bayern prediction a little later in the piece, while also discussing some relevant PSG vs Bayern tips. But first, let’s take a closer look at the key matchups and individual duels that will go a long way to deciding the outcome of the first leg.
1️⃣ Lionel Messi vs Joshua Kimmich
Whether PSG deploy a 3-4-1-2 formation or the more recently favoured 4-2-3-1 shape, talismanic World Cup winner Lionel Messi will likely play in the hole and behind the pacy Mbappe.
If this is the case, Bayern will need to find a way of denying the World Cup winner time and space, with the side’s outstanding defensive midfielder Joshua Kimmich most likely to take on this responsibility.
While Kimmich is also capable of contributing to Bayern’s attacking play, he’ll need to stay as close as Messi as possible when PSG have possession of the ball. This may mean vacating the midfield to track Messi into wider areas, which will require good positional sense and communication on Kimmich’s part.
As ever, the ability to stop Messi will have a huge impact on the result in Paris, with the legendary forward a key creator for PSG and central to how the side builds its attacks.
2️⃣ Achraf Hakimi vs Jamal Musiala
For Bayern, the precocious and versatile Jamal Musiala will arguably be the biggest threat in Paris, especially if Sadio Mane remains sidelined with a leg injury.
Musiala, who can be deployed centrally or from either flank, is likely to start on the left-hand side against PSG (especially if Mane is unavailable), where he’ll be in direct opposition to the host’s tenacious and skillful wing back Achraf Hakimi.
Hakimi starred during Morocco’s exceptional run at the 2022 World Cup, with his lung bursting runs and constant willingness to receive the ball making him a key outlet on the counterattack. He’ll also look to attack against Bayern and drive Musiala back the other way, so this could be a battle of wills as both players look to dominate offensively.
Whoever wins this duel, they’ll afford their side a viable attacking outlet and give them the best possible chance of winning the game.
3️⃣ Kylian Mbappe vs Dayot Upamecano
Kylian Mbappe’s stock rose even further during the Qatar World Cup, when he scored eight goals (including a hat trick in France’s thrilling final defeat to Argentina) to take his overall tally to 12 in just two tournaments.
He also has 25 goals in 25 games for his club side this season (taking his total tally in the French capital to 196 goas in 242 matches), with his continued transition to a central striker making him an even greater threat than in previous seasons.
He’ll certainly threaten Bayern’s famously high defensive line and occasionally soft centre, with his pacy and athletic countryman Dayot Upamecano likely to take responsibility for marking Mbappe and tracking his runs in behind.
Of course, Upemecano will ideally look to get tight to Mbappe and prevent him from receiving the ball into feet, but he occasionally looked vulnerable during the WC finals and will be at risk of his opponent spinning in behind him and penetrating the space in front of the Bayern goal.
📈 PSG vs Bayern Munich Head-to-Head Statistics
Unsurprisingly, PSG and Bayern have met on 11 occasions during their illustrious histories, with the French side winning six of these encounters and Bayern prevailing on the other five occasions. These games have yielded a total of 30 goals, with these being shared evenly between both sides.
Each of these clashes have come under the banner of the UEFA Champions League, with eight taking place during various group stages, two in the 2020/21 quarterfinals and the other in the aforementioned final in the 2019/20 season.
Of course, the latter match saw Bayern edge a 1-0 win thanks to a second-half goal by Kingsley Coman, as they won their sixth UCL title following a stellar and unbeaten campaign.
However, PSG earned a modicum of revenge during the following campaign, as a Neymar inspired side earned a thrilling 3-2 win in Munich during the first leg of the quarterfinal. While Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s first half goal earned Bayern a 1-0 win in the return leg and levelled the aggregate score at 3-3, PSG progressed to the semis by virtue of the away goal rule.
🏆 PSG vs Bayern Munich Prediction – Who will Win?
While Munich’s injury list makes it hard to forecast the PSG vs Bayern lineup, there’s no doubt that this will be an intense and high-quality match between two of the sides most likely to win the UCL in the 2022/23 campaign.
However, Munich’s recent lack of cutting edge and mounting injury concerns seem to justify the latest PSG vs Bayern odds, which make the Parisians narrow favourites to achieve a first leg advantage ahead of the return match in Germany.
While PSG have also struggled for form domestically of late, they’re largely at full strength and boast an incredible array of options in attack, with the outstanding triumvirate of Messi, Mbappe and Neymar all expected to start at a packed Parc des Princes.
These three will certainly target Bayern’s typically high defensive line with their blend of skill, pace and vision, while the absence of Sabitzer and potentially Goretzka in central midfield could also leave Munich short of experience and cover. This all points to a narrow home win, so my PSG vs Bayern 1st leg prediction is that the Parisians will prevail in a high scoring game.

🔍 PSG vs Bayern Munich Betting Tips
I’ve already touched on the some of the key PSG vs Bayern odds, but how can you leverage these prices and markets to your advantage as a punter? Here are some PSG vs Bayern betting tips to keep in mind:
1️⃣ PSG to Win at 2.40 With Unibet
While straight match betting isn’t for everyone (especially with the draw a viable option when betting on individual knockout games), both PSG and Bayern are relatively competitively priced to win in Paris.
However, I think that backing PSG at a market high price of 2.40 with Unibet offers the most value, especially given the recent injuries and absences that have besieged Bayern and their relative lack of ruthlessness domestically.
Although neither side is particularly tight defensively, Bayern also adopt an aggressively high defensive line under Nagelsmann, and this could prove highly vulnerable against PSG’s creative and fleet-of-foot attack. So, get on the home side to win in what I expect to be a close and high-scoring match.
2️⃣ Both Sides to Score at 1.44 With William Hill
This wager represents something of a no-brainer, with both sides particularly strong offensively and known to play relatively high defensive lines.
Without the away goal to worry about, PSG should also be committed and aggressive in attack, creating open spaces for Bayern to break in what should be an incredibly open and entertaining game.
Because of this, you may want to consider backing both sides to score, with this outcome priced at 1.44 by William Hill. Although these odds aren’t great, you can increase your potential returns with a hefty stake, so long as you wager within your means and gamble responsibly.
If you want to minimise your stake but unlock slightly better odds, you can bet on both sides to score and PSG to win in Paris. Once again, William Hill offers the market leading odds in this respect, pricing the outcome at 3.60 at present.
3️⃣ Over 2.5 Goals at 1.48 With Unibet
On a similar note, it’s highly likely that more than 2.5 goals will be scored in the first leg clash between PSG and Bayern, especially if one of these sides is able to score early in the contest.
You can get on this at a competitive price of 1.48 with Unibet, with this even money wager likely to deliver you a return on your stake amount.
Arguably, you could even bet on more goals being scored in the clash between PSG and Bayern without overly compromising your chances of placing a winning bet.
For example, you can bet on their being over 3.5 goals scored at a price of 2.05 with BoyleSports, while wagering on a goal haul of more than 4.5 (which is in line with our PSG vs Bayern Munich prediction) is available at 3.50 with William Hill.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions About PSG vs Bayern Prediction
So, there it is; my comprehensive Paris Saint Germain vs. Bayern Munich prediction and detailed look at the very latest match betting odds.
However, I also wanted to answer some of your most frequently asked questions about the first leg clash, so that you can hopefully make some informed (and profitable) betting selections!
1️⃣ PSG vs Bayern Munich Champions League Leg 1 – Who Will Win?
I’m backing PSG to edge this clash of the titans, thanks in part to the impact of home advantage and the injuries that have continued to plague Bayern in midfield and attack. You can get a market high price of 2.40 for PSG to win at Unibet, while betting on there being plenty of goals scored may also unlock some additional value.
2️⃣ What’s the best price for PSG to beat Bayern?
As I’ve touched on, Unibet’s price of 2.40 for PSG to beat Bayern in the first leg of their round of 16 clash offers the best value at present, although PalmSlots Sports has also priced this outcome at 2.38. These represent relatively good value bets, and I’d recommend that you wager on this outcome sooner rather than later just in case the prices shorten.
3️⃣ Where Can I Watch PSG vs Bayern?
You can watch the first leg clash between PSG and Bayern on February 14th live on BT Sport 3. The match kicks off at 20:00 GMT, while you may also want to check in and see if the encounter is being livestreamed by your sportsbook of choice (which is ideal if you intend to place in-play bets).
4️⃣ Would You Recommend Placing ‘Double Chance Bets’?
‘Double chance’ betting is available across all two-legged UCL ties, and it requires you to bet on one of the competing sides to win both of the associated matches. In this case, I’d argue against placing this type of bet, with both teams incredibly strong at home and little to choose between the sides in their previous 11 matches. During the last two-legged meeting in 2020/21, for example, PSG were able to earn a crucial 3-2 win in Munich, and despite progressing on away goals, they were beaten 1-0 in the return leg.
