On Wednesday, 15th February, two of the relative UEFA Champions League outsiders will resume their European campaigns at the Jan Breydel Stadium in Brugge.
Here, we’ll all see the intriguing first-leg clash in the Club Brugge vs Benfica tie, with the Belgians looking to reach the quarterfinals of the UCL for only the third time in their history. They first reached this stage in 1976/77, before famously reaching the final the following season (they ultimately lost 1-0 to Liverpool at Wembley Stadium).
As for Benfica, they’re more accustomed to reaching this stage of the tournament, having appeared in the quarterfinals three times during the last decade alone. However, they haven’t progressed beyond this stage since 1989/90, when they reached the final in Vienna only to lose 1-0 to an all-conquering AC Milan side.
But which of these sides will win in Belgium and boost their chances of reaching the last eight? I’ll analyse the core betting markets and Champions League odds in detail below, before offering my expert Club Brugge vs Benfica prediction and wagering tips!
Update 1st March 2023, We have published our Benfica vs Club Brugge Prediction with Odds page covering the 2nd leg of the Champions League round of 16.

🏅 Club Brugge Champions League Round of 16 Leg 1
Aside from that brief period during the late 1970s, Club Brugge have scarcely impacted European competition, and few expected much to change this season despite the side’s impressive Belgian Pro League title win in 2021/22.
They were also rewarded for their qualification with an incredibly difficult draw in Group B, as they lined up alongside FC Porto, Bayer Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid. However, the side won their first three matches in some style, beating Leverkusen (1-0) and Atletico Madrid (2-0) at home while earning a 4-0 triumph over Porto at the iconic Estádio do Dragão.
Further goalless draws in Germany and Spain secured second place and qualification for the round of 16, while Club Brugge have no known injury or suspension issues ahead of their first-leg clash with Benfica.
However, Brugge have suffered some indifferent domestic form in the defence of their Belgian title, with a run of just one win in six matches on either side of the World Cup seeing them slip to fourth in the table. They also lost 3-1 at league leaders Genk last time out, leaving them a staggering 18 points behind their fierce rivals.

Tweets by Club Brugge KV Champions League⚡ Benfica Champions League Round of 16 Leg 1 Preview
Despite losing Gedson Fernandes, Everton and the prolific Darwin Nunez during the summer, Benfica have rebounded superbly in 2022/23, winning 27 and losing just one of their 34 matches across all competitions so far as they pursue a potentially historic treble.
In addition to opening up a seven-point lead at the top of the Primeira Liga, Benfica are also into the quarterfinals of the Taça de Portugal. They also qualified for the UCL round of 16 impressively, having progressed through two qualifying rounds (beating FC Midtjylland and Dynamo Kyiv) before topping Group H ahead of a star-studded PSG side and Juventus.
Benfica and PSG shared 1-1 draws home and away, while the two teams finished level in Group H with the same number of wins, points and an identical goal difference. Ultimately, Benfica claimed top spot and a much easier round of 16 draw by virtue of scoring more goals away from home, aided in part by their 6-1 thrashing of Maccabi Haifa on matchday five.
Like Brugge, Benfica should also have a largely fully fit playing squad to choose from for the first-leg match. However, deep-lying striker Rafa Silva may miss out with an ongoing muscle complaint, with the talented forward having scored 11 goals in 28 games across all competitions in 2022/23.

Tweets by SLBenfica Champions League🆚 Club Brugge vs Benfica Key Matchups
Some of you may not know a great deal about the Club Brugge and Benfica playing squads, making it hard to predict the eventual outcome or identify the key individual battles. So, here’s my breakdown of the matchups that are most likely to influence the outcome of the first leg!
1️⃣ Brandon Mechele vs Gonçalo Ramos
Young Portuguese striker Goncalo Ramos first came to international prominence during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, when he scored a superb hattrick against Switzerland in a 6-1 win in the round of 16. Ramos’ superb performance was all the more remarkable given the media scrutiny he was under after he replaced the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting 11.
He’s been in superb form for Benfica this season too, scoring 18 goals in 28 matches in all competitions and taking his total tally for the club to 32 in 87 games in the process.
He’ll most likely come up against Belgian international Brandon Mechele in the first leg, with the 30-year-old anchoring the centre of the Club Brugge defence and central to the club’s domestic success in recent times.
He’ll also look to play aggressively against Ramos and prevent him from receiving the ball into feet, whereas Ramos will play on the defender’s shoulder and look to run in behind. This will be a fascinating battle, and one that could help to determine the final result.
2️⃣ Bjorn Meijer vs Joao Mario
On Benfica’s right side, I’m also expecting to see a fascinating battle between youth and experience, with the 30-year-old Joao Mario enjoying something of an Indian summer for the Portuguese side.
In fact, he’s scored 12 goals in 30 matches from the right of midfield this season, with this representing his highest-ever total in a single campaign despite there still being plenty of games to play in all competitions.
Brugge’s 19-year-old left-back Bjorn Meijer will be on his way in the first leg, with the former Groningen star looking to make his mark on the biggest of stages.
Of course, Mario doesn’t play as an orthodox winger, as he often looks to drift off the flank and threaten within the width of the 18-yard box. So, Meijer will have to track his opponent’s clever and constant movement throughout, while also looking to provide attacking width when Brugge venture forward.
3️⃣ Ferran Jutglà vs Nicolas Otamendi
At the other end of the pitch, 23-year-old Spanish striker Ferran Jutglà will provide the Belgian sides biggest attacking threat, with the mobile forward having hit 10 goals in 29 matches so far this season.
This includes two strikes in six UCL appearances, while the forward has plundered 51 goals in 173 appearances during his fledgling career to date.
In his way in the first leg will be the experienced Nicolas Otamendi, who starred at the heart of Argentina’s defence as La Albiceleste won their third World Cup. He also earned his 100th international cap during the showpiece final, crowing this achievement in the most incredible way imaginable.
Otamendi will have his hands full against Ferran Jutglà, however, who will look to play on the 34-year-old’s lack of pace and utilise this to his advantage. However, Otamendi is considerably stronger and more experienced, and he’ll need all of his nous to nullify the Belgian side’s primary goal threat.
📈 Club Brugge vs Benfica Head-to-Head Statistics
Given both sides’ relative lack of success in Europe (especially since the 1970s and 1980s), it should come as no surprise that they’ve yet to face each other in either the UCL, Europa League, UEFA Cup or the now-defunct European Cup Winners’ Cup.
This means that there are no head-to-head data to help inform your match betting selections, but the good news is that you can rely on statistical analysis and insight to bridge this unfortunate void.
According to a comprehensive analysis of each side’s form, performance and individual player statistics, Benfica has a win probability of 62.08%. Conversely, there’s just a 17.32% chance that the Belgium side will emerge victorious, with this largely reflected by the Club Brugge vs Benfica odds that are currently in play.
The draw is slightly more likely than a Brugge win, with this boasting a statistical probability of 20.6% according to the most recent data.
🏆 Club Brugge vs Benfica Prediction – Who will Win?
Now it’s time for my Club Brugge vs Benfica 1st leg prediction, with the odds seemingly against the Belgian minnows gaining a first-leg advantage over their more established rivals.
After all, Benfica boasts superior experience and individual quality, while the side is in much better form and riding a wave of momentum having lost just once in 34 matches so far this season. Conversely, Club Brugge have recorded just a single win in their last six league matches, as their title defence has seemingly been distracted and undermined by an unexpected UCL run.
Benfica will have also noted that despite impressive group stage wins against Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid at the Jan Breydel Stadium, they were thumped 4-0 in the same venue by Porto in October. This highlighted Brugge’s potential vulnerability against high-quality and in-form opponents, particularly when such sides are able to counter quickly and at will.
Overall, it’s hard to look past a Benfica win at the Jan Breydel Stadium, with The Eagles also highly likely to progress from the round of 16 and qualify for the last eight.

🔍 Club Brugge v Benfica Betting Tips

Now that you understand the latest Club Brugge vs Benfica betting odds, it’s time to reflect on how you can leverage these and achieve a viable return on your bankroll.
So, here are some expert Club Brugge vs Benfica betting tips, based on my expert analysis of the first leg and tie as a whole.
1️⃣ Benfica to Win at 2.00 With Various Sportsbooks
While there isn’t huge value to be found in backing Benfica to win the first leg of their clash with Brugge, Luckster, Ladbrokes and William Hill have priced this outcome at 2.00 in the current marketplace.
At this price, the wager arguably strikes the ideal balance between risk and reward from a punter’s perspective, especially when you consider the relative gulf in quality that exists between the two competing sides.
Tip #1: This is one of the best and most straightforward Club Brugge vs Benfica tips that I can offer, and I’d recommend getting in on this market while you can, as the odds could well shorten ahead of kick-off!
2️⃣ ‘Double Chance’ Betting on Benfica at 1.29 With TonyBet Sports
So-called “double chance” betting involves wagering on one side to win both matches in a two-legged tie, while it offers particular value in the clash between Club Brugge and Benfica.
Certainly, the Portuguese side are heavy favourites to win both matches in this round of 16 tie, while you can get in on this action at a real-time price of 1.29 with TonyBet Sports at present.
Tip #2: With an increased stake, you can bank a sizable return on this wager, with Benfica looking to impose themselves on their less established rivals and dominate both legs as they bid to earn a coveted quarterfinal spot.
3️⃣ Betting on There Being Under 2.5 Goals at 2.70 with BoyleSports
Generally speaking, Betinireland’s best betting sites expect there to be over 2.5 goals in the first leg between Club Brugge and Benfica, but I take a slightly different view about this particular market.
More specifically, I think there’s value to be found in betting on the under 2.5 goals market pertaining to the first leg of this round of 16 clash. This offers access to extended odds and higher returns, with both BoyleSports and TonyBet Sports pricing this outcome at a competitive 2.70.
Tip #3: Of course, there’s a slight risk associated with this type of bet, with the absence of the away goal rule likely to encourage Club Brugge to be a little more adventurous than they otherwise may have been.
However, you can stake a relatively small amount on this outcome, helping you to minimise your risk without overly compromising your potential return.
As you can see, there’s a broad range of betting markets associated with the first-leg clash between Club Brugge and Benfica on February 15th.

1️⃣ Club Brugge vs Benfica Champions League Leg 1 – Who Will Win?
Underdogs Club Brugge will be up against it in Belgium, despite having home advantage in the first leg. Their lack of recent form will be of particular concern to their fans, as will Benfica’s obvious quality and the fact that they’ve only lost once in all competitions this season. So, I’m backing Benfica to win comfortably here.
2️⃣ What’s the best price for Benfica to beat Club Brugge?
If you agree with me that Benfica are going to beat Club Brugge, you can bet on this outcome at a market leading price of 2.00 with Luckster, Ladbrokes and William Hill. As for the Belgian champions, they’re priced as high as 4.00 with Unibet, and this may be a tempting option for those of you who like an outside wager at a nominal stake.

4️⃣ What are the Outright Odds for Club Brugge vs Benfica?
As I’ve already touched on, both sides are relative outsiders to win the UCL outright. Portuguese giants Benfica are priced at an average of 25.00 to win the 2022/23 iteration of the tournament, for example, while Belgian minnows Club Brugge can be backed as high as 181.00 to emerge victorious with some sportsbooks.
