🏅 Borussia Dortmund Champions League Round of 16 Leg 1 Preview
Despite enduring a mixed domestic and European campaign so far in 2022/23 (Dortmund have won 15 of their 26 matches across all competitions), Borussia Dortmund will kick off their first leg against Chelsea in relatively good form.
In fact, they’ve won all three of the Bundesliga games that they’ve played since returning from the FIFA World Cup betting tournament, with Dortmund now up to fourth in the league and just three points off a faltering Bayern Munich side in top spot.
In the Champions League, Dortmund ultimately qualified relatively comfortably from UEFA Group G, with early victories against FC Copenhagen (3-0) and Sevilla (4-1) helping to secure their passage to the round of 16. So, although they subsequently drew their final three matches, they finished second in the group and five points off Manchester City in top spot.
The Dortmund playing squad is also in relatively good health ahead of their first leg clash with Chelsea, although Thomas Meunier remains a long-term absentee with a torn muscle. Youngsters Soumaila Coulibaly (19) and Julien Duranville (16) may also miss out with pelvis and muscle injuries respectively, but otherwise Dortmund will have a full selection of players to choose from.
📰 Latest Borussia Dortmund Champions League News
Tweets by Borussia Dortmund Champions League⚡ Chelsea Champions League Round of 16 Leg 1 Preview
Chelsea’s incredible spending spree through 2022/23 shows no sign of slowing down any time soon, as the club look to make Benfica’s precocious 22-year-old midfield star Enzo Fernandez the most expensive British signing of all time by concluding a £105 million (€119.5 million) deal.
Of course, Fernandez may not be eligible to represent the Blues in the UCL this season, but beleaguered manager Graham Potter will hope that the midfielder’s arrival will help to inspire a team that has won just 12 (and lost 10) of its 28 competitive matches across all competitions in 2022/23.
What’s more, Chelsea have won just two of their last 11 Premier League matches since October 16th and before the World Cup, while they’ve also been eliminated from both domestic cups at the first tine of asking (by Manchester City in both instances).
While Potter retains a large and bloated squad of players to call on for the match against Dortmund, he’s also dealing with a significant injury list. For example, first choice keeper Edouard Mendy remains sidelined with a shoulder injury, while Raheem Sterling (hamstring), Christian Pulisic (knee) and on-loan defensive midfielder Denis Zakaria (hamstring) are also expected to miss out.
Bustling striker Armando Broja is also out for the season having suffered a crucial ligament rupture, while the first leg may come a little too soon for the indefatigable N’Golo Kante (who continues to recover from a hamstring injury). The good news is that on-loan Portuguese forward Joao Felix may be eligible to play, with UEFA having relaxed their rules on cup-tied players and enabled clubs to register up to three new representatives ahead of the knockout phase.

Tweets by Chelsea FC Champions League🆚 Dortmund vs Chelsea Preview: Key Matchups
Regardless of the confirmed Borussia Dortmund vs Chelsea lineup, you can rest assured that both sides will field some exceptional individual players. But what are the key individual duals and matchups, and how will they impact the outcome of the first leg? Let’s take a look.
1️⃣ Jude Bellingham vs Mateo Kovacic
While Graham Potter has a large and potentially confusing range of options in the centre of Chelsea’s midfield, there’s little doubt that the Croatian Mateo Kovacic remains his most important player in this part of the pitch.
Certainly, the dynamic Kovacic boasts a depth of experience at the highest level (he has also played for Real Madrid and Inter Milan), while his dynamism, technical skills and ball carrying abilities make him a key driver of Chelsea’s midfield engine.
He’ll find the precocious English midfielder Jude Bellingham in his way at the Signal Iduna Park, however, with the 19-year-old continuing to showcase maturity beyond his years and an all-round, box-to-box game that has attracted the attention of Europe’s top clubs.
Bellingham has also added goals to his game this term, scoring 10 in 23 matches so far and four in five UCL matches. Whoever wins this dual will afford their side a platform on which to play, and Kovacic will hope to use all his experience to halt Bellingham in his tracks in the first leg.
2️⃣ Sebastien Haller vs Thiago Silva
Former West Ham and Ajax star Sebastien Haller has endured a challenging start to his Borussia Dortmund career, having missed the first half of the 2022/23 campaign after a testicular cancer diagnosis.
He’s now back in the fold, however, with the tall and mobile hitman ready to lend his power and goal threat to Dortmund’s UCL cause.
However, he’ll come up against Chelsea’s ‘immovable object’ in the form of the 39-year-old Thiago Silva, who continues to roll back the years and excel as the Blues’ defensive bedrock. Make no mistake; Silva has been an ocean of calm during a tumultuous season both on and off the pitch at Stamford Bridge, and he’ll look to nullify Haller’s threat with controlled aggression and assurance in Dortmund.
This will be a key battle, and much will depend on Haller’s match fitness after several months on the sidelines.
3️⃣ Niklas Sule vs Kai Havertz
For all of Chelsea’s relentless spending, they remain noticeable short in the centre forward area. Certainly, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has flattered to deceive since arriving in West London last summer (he has scored just three times in 17 matches for Chelsea), while young striker Broja is out for the season with a cruciate ligament rupture.
So, the versatile and talented Kai Havertz is once again expected to lead the line in Dortmund, which will put him in direct competition against Dortmund’s powerful and uncompromising centre half Niklas Sule in the first leg.
Incredibly, Dortmund were able to secure the 27-year-old Sule on a free transfer last summer, with this representing one of the bargains of the transfer window (from rivals Bayern Munich too).
He’ll also fancy his chances of physically dominating and nullifying Havertz, exacerbating Chelsea’s attacking issues and lack of fluency in the final third.
📈 Dortmund vs Chelsea Head-to-Head Statistics
Despite these two sides having been UCL regulars for the last decade and more, Borussia and Dortmund have never played one another in European competition.
This makes my task of offering an accurate Dortmund vs Chelsea prediction a little harder than it should be, but the good news is that there’s statistical information we can use to calculate each side’s win probability.
This figure is derived from detailed team and player data sets, including recent form both home and away. Currently, the data gives Dortmund a 43.08% chance of winning the first leg, while a Chelsea victory has an estimated win probability of just 33.36%. The draw has a probability of 23.6%.
The data also suggests that a 2-1 win for Dortmund is the most likely result, but I’ll touch a little more on this in the next section.
🏆 Borussia Dortmund vs Chelsea Prediction – Who will Win?
It’s now Borussia Dortmund vs Chelsea 1st leg prediction time, with the bookies currently making the Bundesliga side narrow favourites to win and take a lead to Stamford Bridge for the return leg.
However, this is an incredibly difficult game to call, as while Chelsea have underperformed domestically, they’ve been excellent in the UCL and produced two exceptional performances against AC Milan early on in Graham Potter’s managerial tenure to stamp their mark on the competition.
The club also retains an affinity with this competition, having won it twice since 2011 and most recently in 2021 under Thomas Tuchel. They always seem to reserve their best form for the Champions League, and the competition could provide a much needed distraction from their league woes.
So, I’m going to opt for a narrow Chelsea win in Dortmund, as the Blues lay down a marker and take their first, tentative steps towards another quarterfinal appearance.

🔍 Borussia Dortmund vs Chelsea Betting Tips
OK, so now you’ve reviewed the latest Borussia Dortmund vs Chelsea betting odds and read my first leg prediction. Now, I’m going to offer you my best Borussia Dortmund vs Chelsea betting tips, helping you to leverage the above markets to your advantage!
1️⃣ Chelsea to win at 2.75 with Ladbrokes Sports
Dortmund’s status as slight favourites is reflected by the latest sportsbook odds, with Unibet offering a market leading price of 2.65 on the Bundesliga outfit to prevail in the first leg.
However, a potential Chelsea win offers access to even greater value and returns, with this outcome priced as high as 2.75 with Ladbrokes Sports.
So, if you agree with me that Chelsea’s enduring quality and UCL pedigree will give them a competitive edge against Dortmund, you may want to bet on this outcome now and take advantage of Ladbrokes’ pricing.
Otherwise, this price could shorten and the opportunity to optimise your potential returns could be lost in the blink of an eye!
2️⃣ Both Sides to Score at 1.62 with Unibet
Unibet regularly offers the best and most competitive UCL betting odds, with the sportsbook currently pricing both sides to score at 1.62.
This represents relatively good value, especially when you consider the potential firepower that both sides possess and their respective focus on adopting a high press and attacking, possession-oriented philosophy.
I can’t see either side’s defence holding out against the other’s attack, even allowing for the excellence of the experienced Thiago Silva and powerful Niklas Sule.
So, I’d encourage you to bet on this outcome at Unibet’s current price, with even a nominal stake delivering a viable return (depending on your expectations, of course).
3️⃣ Betting on There Being Over 2.5 Goals at 1.80 with Unibet
If I’m right that both sides will score and there will be an outright winner in the first leg, then it also makes sense that more than 2.5 goals will be scored in the clash between these two exceptional teams.
This is one of the best Borussia Dortmund vs Chelsea tips that I can offer, as not only are both sides stacked with attacking quality, but you also can access relatively lengthy odds on the first leg being relatively high scoring.
For example, you can bet on more than 2.5 goals being scored at a price of 1.80 with Unibet, with this offering excellent value and a decent return regardless of your stake amount.
This price should also meet the minimum odds requirements associated with most Dortmund vs Chelsea free bets, but I’ll explore some of the best deals and bonus in the next section.
🎁 Champions League Free Bet Offers to Use on Borussia Dortmund vs Chelsea
As you can tell, there’s a large and diverse range of betting markets associated with the first leg clash between Dortmund and Chelsea, creating considerable choice in terms of how you deploy your bankroll.
Regardless of your choices and betting selections, however, you can make the most of your starting bankroll by leveraging one or more of the Dortmund vs Chelsea free bet offers below. I’ve listed 12 offers for you to consider, while explaining the best three in a little more detail!
1️⃣ Ladbrokes - Wager €5 and receive €20 in Free Bets:
We’ll start with Ladbrokes, which continues to offer a €20 welcome offer to new Ireland and UK customers. This will see you earn four, separate €5 free wagers when you place a qualifying first bet of €5, each of which can be placed on the match between Borussia Dortmund and Chelsi if you wish. Just note that the minimum odds requirement is 1.50, which is relatively competitive for an offer of this type.
2️⃣ Luckster – 100% Deposit Match up to €100:
In terms of scope and generosity, Luckster’s striking 100% deposit match offer up to the value of €100 really stands out from the crowd. Incredibly, no wagering requirements have been applied to this welcome offer, which means that you won’t have to play through a specified multiple of the bonus to complete a subsequent withdrawal. However, the minimum odds in play here are a little higher at 2.00 (ruling out some betting markets), while deposits made through PayPal, Skrill or Neteller won’t be eligible to receive any bonus funds.
3️⃣ PalmSlots Sports – 100% Deposit Match up to €100:
At present, relative newcomer PalmSlots Sports is also offering a 100% deposit match up to €100 to all new customers in Ireland. However, the brand has also made this offer subject to wagering requirements of 16x the total bonus value, meaning that unlocking €10 in bonus funds through a €10 deposit will create a playthrough amount of €160. You’ll have to stake this before you make any associated withdrawals, while all qualifying bet selections must have minimum odds of 1.80.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions About Club Borussia Dortmund vs Chelsea Prediction
I hope this Borussia Dortmund vs Chelsea prediction and betting guide has been helpful. Before I leave you, however, I wanted to answer some of your most frequently asked questions about the first leg, while summarizing some of the main odds and markets! So, let’s get into it!
1️⃣ Borussia Dortmund vs Chelsea Champions League Leg 1 – Who Will Win?
While Borussia Dortmund remain the narrow bookmaker favourites to win the first leg of their round of 16 clash with Chelsea, I think that this overlooks the Blues individual quality and UCL pedigree. Graham Potter’s men have also performed with more aggression and organization during their last two EPL games, so I’m backing them to nick a tight and keenly contested win in Germany.
2️⃣ What’s the best price for Chelsea to beat Dortmund?
If you agree with me that Chelsea are going to edge Dortmund in the first leg of this fascinating round of 16 clash, you can get on this at a market leading pricing of 2.75 with Ladbrokes. Just remember that all prices are subject to change, and the odds may shorten as the match continues to draw closer!
3️⃣ Where Can I Watch Dortmund vs Chelsea?
You may be able to livestream the first leg between Dortmund and Chelsea through your sportsbook of choice, which is ideal if you intend to engage in live or in-play betting. However, you can also watch the game live on February 15th through BT Sport, with the kickoff time scheduled for 20:00 in Germany.
4️⃣ Should I Place a Double Bet on Chelsea to Beat Dortmund?
The ‘Double Chance’ market allows to back either Dortmund or Chelsea to win both legs of their round of 16 tie, but I’d argue that this wager type should be avoided in this instance. After all, both sides are evenly matched, while it’s hard to see either dominating to the point where they can claim two comfortable victories over the course of the tie.
