The opening fillies' Classic of the season comes up at Newmarket on the first Sunday in May as the 1000 Guineas goes to post on the Rowley Mile. Renowned trainer Aidan O'Brien has won this race five times in the last nine years and is expected to present a strong challenge from Ireland once again.
However, it's worth noting that the last three 1000 Guineas winners have all been trained in Britain. We are looking ahead to Sunday's major horse racing event, and we've got a trio of 1000 Guineas betting tips for consideration going into a massive weekend at Newmarket.
🏆 Newmarket 1000 Guineas Prediction
The big guns are aiming to fire in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket with top trainers Aidan O'Brien and Charlie Appleby behind the 1000 Guineas favourites in 2025. The pair can count on unbeaten duo Desert Flower (Appleby) and Lake Victoria (O'Brien) as the principal players heading to the 1000 Guineas Festival as they look to start the Classic season in fine style.
The Ballydoyle supremo has seven wins in this Newmarket Classic on his CV already, while Appleby is still waiting to add the race to his impressive body of work. Desert Flower heads the 1000 Guineas odds, but there may be value in siding with Lake Victoria instead, given her trainer has such a splendid record in the race. For that reason, she is our top pick for the race, and you can find out more below on the reasons why, as well as discover where the best odds exist with some of the best betting sites for the big race.
OUR PREDICTION: 🏆 LAKE VICTORIA TO WIN 🏆
🏇 Newmarket 1000 Guineas Betting Preview
The 1000 Guineas is the second of two Classics at Newmarket and the first chance for the three-year-old fillies to shine on the biggest stage. There are three fantastic days of racing at Headquarters, all building towards this race on Sunday. Ahead of the meeting, check out our bookmaker reviews to help you identify the best place for your betting needs as the Flat season hits top gear.
1️⃣ Lake Victoria / Aidan O'Brien
Aidan O'Brien has gone three years without a win in this race. Before that, the Irishman had won five times in six years. His Ballydoyle production line should churn out another Guineas winner before too long, and Lake Victoria could be the answer. Officially rated 2lb superior to Desert Flower, Lake Victoria landed the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes over 6f last season before stepping up a mile to win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar in November. The Frankel filly is 4.50 at William Hill to win this contest at Newmarket and, at the prices, looks the best value amongst the 1000 Guineas runners.
2️⃣ Desert Flower / Charlie Appleby
The most striking alternative to that Ballydoyle filly must be Desert Flower for Newmarket-based handler Charlie Appleby. He looks to add this race to his 2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby, and St Leger-winning CV. She will feature heavily in any 1000 Guineas prediction, and her two-year-old form is of the highest standard.
A four-time winner as a juvenile, Desert Flower sparkled in a racecourse gallop at the Craven meeting, and her claims make her the favourite at 2.00 with William Hill.
3️⃣ Duty First / Archie Watson
Trainer Archie Watson has got his string in scintillating form of late. He now has a serious contender for the 1000 Guineas after connections decided to pay the supplementary fee to enter Duty First in the race. She returned to action with victory in the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury and is 14.00 at LeoVegas to build on that with victory in the Fillies' Classic.
She was placed in the Rockfel Stakes over 7f at Newmarket last season on soft ground and looked an improved model at Newbury. She's expected to have Hollie Doyle on board, the rider seeking a first Classic-race winner. Doyle is popular with punters, and some will be tempted to use some free bets to get behind her Guineas mount.
