It is finally here! After the Solheim Cup, golf fans are now looking towards the main course, the Ryder Cup. This is one of the greatest events in golf, a competition that all professional golfers want to play in, and the 2023 Ryder Cup will be played on European soil at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, just outside of Rome in Italy, from the 29th of September to the 1st of October. Will Team USA claim a rare win on European soil, or will Team Europe claim the spoils? Read on to find out what I think.
🎱 Ryder Cup Betting Preview
If the 2023 Ryder Cup has the same sort of drama and entertainment as last week's Solheim Cup in Malaga, then sports betting fans are in for a right treat. The Solheim Cup went right down to the wire, and we saw the first draw in the competition's history, meaning Europe retained their title. Ahead of the Ryder Cup later this week, the bookmakers are struggling to split the two teams, with Team America being very slight favourites.
What format will the Ryder Cup have this year? Well, 12 players will represent both teams, with fourballs and foursomes being played on Friday and Saturday, while 12 single matches will be played on Sunday. In total, there will 28 points available to be won, meaning that a total of 14.5 points will be needed for either team to be victorious. If both teams end up on 14 points apiece, then it is a tie and the current holders, which is Team USA, will claim the cup.
Before you go and place any kind of Ryder Cup bets, it is important to find out all that you can about the 2023 Ryder Cup teams. Therefore, below I am going to take a closer look at Team USA and Team Europe, and I shall also give you some of the top odds that quality bookmakers are offering at the moment.

Odds for Team USA to Win:
🪢 Tie
As I already mentioned, there is the possibility of a draw in the Ryder Cup if both teams end up with 14 points apiece. While the odds for such a market are pretty enticing, you might want to keep in mind that there has only been the one draw since 1979.
Odds for the Ryder Cup to end in a tie:
📊 Ryder Cup Winners
Before you go ahead and bet on the outright winner of any golf tournament, it is wise to check out who has had success in the past since success leads to confidence, and confidence leads to even more success. In total, the Ryder Cup has been played a total of 44 times, but from 1927 until 1977 it saw Team USA take on Team GB/Ireland - the USA completely dominated with 18 wins to GB/Ire's 1 win, so it became Team Europe in 1979 in order to try and even things up.
Since 1979, Europe has been the dominant team with 11 wins to USA's 9, but in the last edition, USA won by a total of 10 points, which is the biggest-ever winning margin to date. In the following table, you can see the results of the previous 10 editions of the Ryder Cup:
Year | Venue | Winners | Score |
---|---|---|---|
2023 | Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, Rome | Europe | 16.5 -11.5 |
2021 | Whistling Straits, USA | USA | 19-9 |
2018 | Le Golf National, France | Europe | 17.5-10.5 |
2016 | Hazeltine, USA | USA | 17-11 |
2014 | Gleneagles, Scotland | Europe | 16.5-11.5 |
2012 | Medinah, USA | Europe | 14.5-13.5 |
2010 | Celtic Manor, Wales | Europe | 14.5-13.5 |
2008 | Valhalla, USA | USA | 16.5-11.5 |
2006 | K, Club, Ireland | Europe | 18.5-9.5 |
2004 | Oakland Hills, USA | Europe | 18.5-9.5 |
2002 | The Belfry, England | Europe | 15.5-12.5 |
🏆 2023 Ryder Cup Prediction
This year's Ryder Cup is very hard to predict since both teams should be equally suited to the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club course, and both have the same number of question marks over the form of particular players. However, I am going to go against the current Ryder Cup golf odds and give the edge to the Ryder Cup European team.
Team USA is made up of six players that are ranked among the top 10 best golfers in the world, but in the shape of McIlroy, Rahm, and Hovland, Team Europe have three of the top four, and all three head into this tournament with some decent form under their belts. Additionally, seven of the players in Team Europe have competitive experience on this golf course, with MacIntyre and Hojgaard having won titles here in the past.
Finally, history is on the side of Team Europe as Team USA have not won in Europe or retained the Ryder Cup since way back in 1993. Thus, when all of the above is taken into consideration, my money is on Europe to win yet another Ryder Cup - something that seemed almost impossible after their demolition at the hands of the Americans two years ago.
My Prediction to win the 2023 Ryder Cup: Team Europe!
⭐ Ryder Cup Betting Tips
Now that I have told you who I think will go on to win the 2023 Ryder Cup, I am going to finish by giving you some other useful Ryder Cup tips. However, the first tip that I need to give you is to always gamble responsibly and do not spend more money than you can afford to end up losing. Set yourself a budget, and always make sure to stick to it.
Viktor Hovland to be Top Scorer for Europe
There is plenty of quality on Team Europe, but it feels like it could be Hovland's week, He has been in great form as of late, with three wins from his previous nine starts, and he is currently hitting the ball sweeter than any other player on Team Europe. He will want to banish the memories of his Ryder Cup debut two years ago, and what better way to do that than finishing as the top points scorer for his team.
Additionally, with his potential partners such as Fleetwood and McIlroy also in fine form ahead of the weekend, he could end up as part of any number of formidable duets during the competition.
Xander Schauffele to be Top Scorer for USA
There are a few questions over the form of some USA team members, but there should be no worries when it comes to Xander Schauffele, nor his likely playing partner, Cantlay. I considered both of them for this particular market, and there is a chance that they will mirror one another's scores before the single matches, but Schauffele's recent better stats, especially on the greens, made me opt for him in the end.
In the 2021 event, he played a total of four matches, and I think that he will play at least the same number in the 2023 edition. If Team USA want to keep hold of the trophy that they won two years ago, then they are going to need a big performance from him.
Correct Score
While I am backing Team Europe to come out on top in this year's Ryder Cup, I am expecting it to be a pretty close battle between two talented teams. If you are looking for a market that usually comes with some high odds, then you might want to take a look at the Correct Score market. I can see Europe winning the 2023 Ryder Cup by a scoreline such as 14.5-13.5 or 15-13.
