Slovenia’s impressive 2-0 win over Portugal was the team’s seventh in their previous nine matches, and it certainly typified their ability to defend deep and hit their opponents on the break. This was evident throughout qualifying, during which they completed a total of 357 ball recoveries and attempted 186 clearances (the most of any team that has qualified for the finals apart from Georgia and Albania). Creative midfielder Adam Gnezda Čerin played a key role during qualification too, contributing three assists and a goal for his country and completing 83% of his passes.
