On Tuesday, February 21st, UEFA Champions League betting outsiders Eintracht Frankfurt will take on runaway Serie A leaders Napoli at the former’s Deutsche Bank Park.

This will be the first leg of the two teams’ round of 16 clash, with the return match scheduled to take place three weeks later in Naples. Unsurprisingly, the Italian side are favourites to prevail over the course of the tie and reach the quarterfinals of Europe’s premier club competition for the first ever time.

However, Frankfurt are performing well in the Bundesliga and sit just five points off the top in fifth place, while they also have form in Europe having won the Europa League last season. This earned them a sport in this year’s UCL, so can the German club build on this momentum to claim a potentially crucial advantage ahead of the second leg on March 15th?

Update: Our 2nd Leg Napoli vs Frankfurt Prediction with odds is now live.

💯 Eintracht Frankfurt vs Napoli City Champions League Odds

Frankfurt vs Napoli is definitely one of the more intriguing round of 16 clashes in this seasons’ Champions League, with neither side boasting a rich pedigree in the tournament (although Frankfurt did reach the final in their only previous appearance during the 1959/60 campaign). 🏅 Eintracht Frankfurt vs Napoli Champions League Round of 16 Leg 1 Preview

Despite a disappointing domestic campaign in 2021/22, Eintracht Frankfurt enjoyed a stellar run in Europe, overcoming Barcelona and West Ham United before defeating Rangers to win the UEFA Europa League crown.

This was the second such continental triumph for Frankfurt, who also won the UEFA Cup back in 1979/80. What’s more, it earned the team their second ever appearance in the Champions League, while Frankfurt have also maintained their impressive form into the new campaign and risen to fifth in the Bundesliga.

Their UCL campaign has also proved successful so far, with crucial away wins against Marseille and Sporting Lisbon helping to secure second place in Group D (behind Tottenham) and a coveted place in the last 16. During the group stages, Frankfurt also relied heavily on FIFA World Cup betting stars Randal Kolo Muani (France) and Daichi Kamada (Japan), who contributed five of the team’s seven goals and remain integral to their counterattacking style of play.

Both of these stars are also fit and available for the Eintracht vs Napoli clash, although striker Nacho Ferri and midfielder Marcel Wenig are expected to miss out on the first leg. Talented Danish winger Jesper Lindstrom is also expected to be unavailable with thigh problems, leaving Frankfurt a little short in the final third.

⚡ Napoli Champions League Round of 16 Leg 1 Preview

While Napoli aren’t among the outright favourites to win the 2022/23 Champions League, few of the remaining sides in the tournament can match the form of Luciano Spalletti’s men either at home or abroad.

To this end, Napoli have won 23 of their 28 competitive matches so far this season, with their two defeats including a loss at Anfield in the final group stage match after they’d already secured qualification to the knockout stages.

They also vanquished a beleaguered Liverpool side 4-1 in their opening Group A clash at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, while displaying the pace, tempo and high pressing game that has characterized their exceptional form throughout the campaign.

In Serie A, Napoli have won 18 of their 21 matches and 16 from their last 17 encounters, opening up a huge 13 point lead over their closest rivals Inter Milan in the process. It seems inevitable that ‘Gli Azzurri’ will now claim their first Scudetto since 1990, while they remain favourites to reach the UCL quarterfinals for the first ever time.

The side will also arrive in Frankfurt virtually at full strength, although influential Korean center back Kim Min-jae is suspended for the first leg. This means that Napoli’s irrepressible forward line of Victor Osimhen, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Giovanni Simeone will all be available, with these three players having contributed a combined 35 goals across all competitions.

🆚 Eintracht Frankfurt vs Napoli Key Matchups

The fact Napoli have almost a full-strength squad to select from is telling and will have a significant influence on my Eintracht vs Napoli prediction. This should also impact the individual duels that will help to decide the outcome of the first leg, so let’s take a closer look at some of these battles and how they’ll affect the final result at the Deutsche Bank Park.

1️⃣ Aurélio Buta vs Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

Typically, Eintracht Frankfurt play a 3-4-3 formation, which can be easily adapted into a 3-4-2-1 or 5-4-1 system depending on the opposition and in-game situation. This could prove vulnerable to Napoli’s deployment of an aggressive and compact 4-3-3, as it may afford too much space for the talented Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Kvaratskhelia has produced 10 goals and 14 assists in just 22 competitive appearances so far this season, and he’ll most likely look to play high and wide against Frankfurt’s back three.

This may mean that Frankfurt’s 25-year-old right wing back Aurélio Buta will have to play a little deeper than usual and mark Kvaratskhelia tightly, in order to prevent the right-sided centre back from being dragged out of position and isolated.

However, this could nullify Eintracht’s ability to counter effectively, so Buta will also have to find a way of driving Kvaratskhelia back towards his own goal or creating attacking overloads out wide in instances where the Georgian doesn’t track back.

2️⃣ Hrvoje Smolčić vs Victor Osimhen

Napoli’s explosive centre forward Victor Osimhen is another huge threat to Frankfurt, with the 24-year-old Nigerian having already scored 17 goals in just 21 matches so far this season.

He has also plundered 45 goals in 83 matches since joining Napoli from Lille for an initial fee of €70 million before the 2020–21 campaign.

Known for his explosive pace and movement, Osimhen is crucial to how Napoli play when in possession of the ball, while he’s also a huge threat during transitions and in instances when the Serie A side are counter-pressing their opponents.

Up against him will be Frankfurt’s 22-year-old Croatian centre back Hrvoje Smolčić, who has already played three UCL games this season and will look to match Osimhen for pace and movement. However, he’s relatively inexperienced, and his ability to handle the Nigerian will have a key bearing on Eintracht’s competitiveness.

3️⃣ Daichi Kamada vs Zambo Anguissa

While most fans became aware of Daichi Kamada’s quality during Japan’s excellent World Cup campaign (they beat both Germany and Spain during the group stages), Eintracht fans know all too well about his goal threat and creativity in the attacking third.

Often deployed as an attacking midfielder or deep-lying forward, Kamada is blessed with intelligent movement and hard for the opposition to pick up (especially during transitions). As a result, he has been able to score 13 goals in 27 matches from midfield this season, including three crucial strikes during the UCL group stages.

Kamada has also provided five assists across all competitions, while creating countless chances for his teammates with excellent and relentless movement.

Napoli’s midfielder Zambo Anguissa may be tasked with picking up Kamada, with the energetic Cameroonian renowned as an excellent box-to-box player with boundless energy. However, this may be challenging given Frankfurt’s penchant for playing on the break, and it will take a collective effort to stop Kamada from influencing the outcome of the first leg.

📈 Eintracht Frankfurt vs Napoli Preview: Head-to-Head Statistics

While the confirmed Frankfurt vs Napoli lineup will have a key bearing on the outcome of the first leg, there’s little insight to be drawn from the sides’ historic head-to-head statistics.

After all, Eintracht Frankfurt and Napoli have only met twice competitively, during the UEFA Cup in the 1994/95 season. The German side prevailed in both legs of this third round tie, winning 1-0 home and away to seal a place in the quarterfinals (where they were ultimately defeated comfortably by Juventus).

Interestingly, iconic Leeds United striker Tony Yeboah scored the winner in the first leg at Deutsche Bank Park, before defensive midfielder Ralf Falkenmayer struck the decisive blow in the 55th minute of the return match.

Unsurprisingly, the two sides have never met in the UEFA Champions League, with the Bundesliga outfit having only appeared in the tournament twice (previously reaching the final in 1959/60 before losing 7-3 to a legendary Real Madrid side at Hampden Park).

🏆 Eintracht Frankfurt vs Napoli Prediction – Who will Win?

Now it’s time for my Frankfurt vs Napoli 1st leg prediction, based on the available team news, recent form and individual duels that will take place all over the pitch.

Ultimately, it’s hard to see past a Napoli win at Deutsche Bank Park, given the incredible form and consistency showcased by the Serie A side both at home and abroad. Spalletti’s side also boasts superior individuals all over the pitch, while we expect them to dominate possession in Germany.

However, the absence of dominant centre back Kim Min-jae will open the door for Frankfurt, who are a skilled counter attacking side that will retain a huge goal threat throughout. To this end, the crafty Kamada and rapid striker Randal Kolo Muani will look to make hay during transitions, and I’d expect the Germans to get on the scoresheet at least.

Overall, I’m expecting the Serie A side to claim a crucial win in the first leg, while our Frankfurt vs Napoli prediction for the whole of the tie is that the latter will reach the quarterfinals.

🔍 Eintracht Frankfurt vs Napoli Betting Tips

If you’re wondering how best to wager on this first leg, round of 16 clash, the good news is that I have a number of Frankfurt vs Napoli betting tips.

But what are the best and most informed Frankfurt vs Napoli tips? Here are three to keep in mind before wagering your hard-earned cash!

1️⃣ Both Sides to Score at 1.60 with William Hill Sports

Clearly, the match between Frankfurt and Napoli will largely pit defence against attack, with the former established primarily as a counterattacking side and the latter renowned for their high tempo and aggressive pressing game.

This should create a predictable pattern of play, but one that will afford plenty of chances for both sides throughout the first leg.

Certainly, Napoli have become increasingly accustomed to playing against deep-lying and defence-oriented sides throughout the season, while Frankfurt possess the pace and movement in attack to exploit the space in behind their opponent’s back line.

So, I’d recommend betting on both sides to score at a price of 1.60 with William Hill, with this likely to deliver a viable return on your stake.

2️⃣ Betting on There Being Over 2.5 Goals at 1.70 with William Hill

As I expect Napoli to win the first leg and both sides to score in Germany, I also think it’s highly likely that over 2.5 goals will be scored during the game.

Of course, the live odds suggest that our sportsbooks agree, with this reflecting the relatively open nature of the tie and the ability of both sides to breach the other’s defensive line.

William Hill is also offering the best price in relation to this market, so you can wager on there being over 2.5 goals scored during the game at odds of 1.70.

TonyBet Sports, Luckster, PalmSlots Sports and Unibet have priced this market at 1.67, but be sure to compare these odds in real-time before placing your bet.

3️⃣ Napoli to Win and Both Sides to Score

There’s also some value on backing Napoli to win and both sides to score at Deutsche Bank Park, with this outcome fully in line with my first leg prediction.

This outcome is certainly competitively priced, with TonyBet Sports offering odds of 4.00 that Napoli will prevail in Germany in a match where both sides find the back of the net.

While this type of wager is a little more precise and subsequently riskier, it’s hard to overstate how vulnerable both teams could be defensively against the other. You can also bet on this outcome with a nominal stake, in order to minimise any increased risk of loss.
