England and Sri Lanka will contest the 25th match of the 2023 Cricket World Cup at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, and it really is a must-win match for both of these teams. They are both fighting an uphill battle to qualify for the semi-finals, and the loser will be practically eliminated from the competition. Who will keep their World Cup dreams alive? Below are my thoughts and predictions for this match as well as the odds on offer from some quality Irish betting sites.
💯 England v Sri Lanka Betting Odds
You will find betting odds and a variety of markets for big cricket matches at a range of Irish bookmakers as this is a sport that is growing in popularity in the Emerald Isle. However, not all betting sites and cricket markets have been created equally. Below I have chosen three popular markets and given you the odds that some of the best bookmakers for Irish cricket bettors are offering.
Match Winners Odds: England v Sri Lanka
Those who are thinking about betting on the match winner can find the match winner odds for this England v Sri Lanka match below:
Team | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
England | 1.30 | 1.33 | 1.35 | 1.34 | 1.29 |
Sri Lanka | 3.03 | 3.20 | 3.20 | 3.20 | 2.92 |
Top Batsman Odds: England v Sri Lanka
Many punters place emphasis on potential returns when betting, but I feel that the emphasis should be placed on the entertainment value that is on offer. For me, one of the most entertaining markets in any sport is cricket's top batsman market because you get to experience the highs and the lows that your selected batsman goes through. Below you can find three English and Sri Lanka batters who are good candidates for this market - you can also see their top batsman odds:
England:
Player | ||
---|---|---|
Joe Root | 4.10 | 4.10 |
Dawid Malan | 4.20 | 4.20 |
Jos Buttler | 5.50 | 5.40 |
Sri Lanka:
Player | ||
---|---|---|
Pathum Nissanka | 4.10 | 4.10 |
Kusal Mendis | 4.10 | 4.10 |
Charith Asalanka | 5.00 | 5.10 |
Top Wicket Taker Odds: England v Sri Lanka
I know that not everyone will enjoy trying to predict the top batsman and, if you happen to be one such person, then perhaps you want to consider placing a bet on the player that will collect the most wickets for their team. With the top wicket taker option, you will be entertained by every ball that your chosen bowler bowls. Below are three potential winners of this market from each team and their current top wicket taker odds:
England:
Player | ||
---|---|---|
Adil Rashid | 3.80 | 3.80 |
David Willey | 4.20 | 4.20 |
Gus Atkinson | 4.50 | 4.50 |
Sri Lanka:
Player | ||
---|---|---|
Dilshan Madushanka | 3.90 | 3.85 |
Maheesh Theekshana | 3.60 | 3.60 |
Lahiru Kumara | 3.60 | 3.05 |
The above odds were correct at the time of writing. For updated odds, go to the bookmakers' sites.
🔍 England v Sri Lanka Match Winner Prediction
I do not know what the worst defense of a Cricket World Cup title is, but I would imagine that England are in some serious danger of setting a new record in this competition. Apart from their match against Bangladesh, they have been poor in both the batting and bowling departments, with Jos Buttler having made some questionable decisions at the toss - why he chose to field first against South Africa in super hot temperatures in Mumbai is beyond me.
Sri Lanka also have just one win, but I have actually been more impressed by their cricket than the cricket that England have been dishing up. They at least seem to try and bat with some common sense, while they try different things with the ball in order to try and conjure up wickets. England, on the other hand, seem to just want to smash every ball out of the park, while their pace bowlers, with the exception of Topley, have gone around the park.
The bookmakers have England as the favourites to win this match, but I think this is based on reputation alone, and not current form. On current form, I think Sri Lanka are the better team, which is why I am going to go against the bookmakers here and predict a win for Sri Lanka.

✔️ England v Sri Lanka CWC Betting Tips
Those who are considering doing some sports betting on this ENG vs SL match should take a look at these tips before putting any bets down.
Match Winner: Sri Lanka to Win
These two teams have a very close head-to-head record - they have played a total of 78 ODI matches, with England winning 38 of them and Sri Lanka winning 36. The other four matches were 3 no results and 1 draw. These head-to-head stats tell us that history is sitting on the fence for this one, but form is not, although both sides have won one and lost three of the four matches that they have played.
When I look at the two teams and how their batsmen and bowlers have played so far in this competition, I think Sri Lanka will enter this match with a lot of confidence, while England's mindset seems to be muddled at the moment. There is also a lot more pressure on England because they are on the verge of an embarrassing title defense, and we cannot underestimate the effect that pressure can have, even on professional athletes.
The Sri Lanka team is inexperienced, but they have plenty of quality in their ranks, and I can see their young bowling attack causing England a number of issues. If Sri Lanka bat first and put on a total above 300, I envisage England crumbling under the pressure and handing over their title meekly.
Those who want to bet on Sri Lanka to win can find odds of 3.20 for a Sri Lanka win.
England's Top Batsman Winner: Joe Root to Win
It is not easy to choose a top batsman for England at present as they all seem to be somewhat out of nick or inconsistent at best. I have opted to go for Joe Root to top score for England because not only is he their best batsman, but he has also had a bit more consistency than his fellow batters. Despite all of their big hitters, Root is still the prize wicket for any team that England play because if he gets in, he is hard to dismiss.
Those who want to put money on Root to top score for England can find odds of 4.10 at Dachbet Sports.
Sri Lanka's Top Batsman Winner: Kusal Mendis to Win
Sri Lanka have never been short of quality batsmen during the 20 years that I have been watching cricket. Some of their best ones include Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Dilshan, and Jayasuriya, and their best batsmen at this current moment in Kusal Mendis. He might not have the power that other batsmen have, but his technical ability and precision more than make up for this. If the England quicks bowl how they have been so far, I can envisage Mendis bedding in for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
TonyBet Sports are currently offering odds of 4.10 for Mendis to be Sri Lanka's top batsman.
England's Top Wicket Taker: Adil Rashid to Win Top Wicket Taker
If Reece Topley was playing, then I would have gone for him as he has been the only England quick bowler that has caused plenty of issues for opposing batsmen. He picked up 8 wickets in 3 matches, but he broke his finger against South Africa and will not be playing for the rest of the competition. Thus, I have gone for Adil Rashid instead because he always slows down the run rate and seems to pick up wickets at crucial times.
If you want to put money on Rashid to be England's best bowler, then Dachbet Sports are currently offering odds of 3.80.
Sri Lanka's Top Wicket Taker: Dilshan Madushanka to Win Top Wicket Taker
Dilshan Madushanka is only 23 years of age, but he has really impressed me during this competition. He picked up three big wickets against Australia in the shape of Smith, Warner, and Labuschagne and he then followed that up with another four wickets against the Dutch to help his team pick up their first win of the tournament. I can see Madushanka causing the English batters all kinds of issues with his variation and pace.
If you want to bet on Madushanka to take the most wickets against England, then Dachbet Sports are offering odds of 3.90.
